Like Warren Buffet said, dividends are only good if the business you’re investing into can’t make good use of that capital. So if you’re trying to invest into businesses with actual growth, looking at dividends is a waste of time. Why are you investing into a company if they’re returning capital to you because they think you can make better use of it than they can. It’s not much different from bond investing. The way I see it if you have a million at some point, that’d be enough to create a portfolio that would pay you between 50k-70k in dividend income.

It's not difficult, but you have to learn and handle. Another thing is that if you can't manage your home, maybe you shouldn't invest on your own. If so, you should hire a CFP to help you diversify your assets to include ETFs/index funds/mutual funds and stocks of companies with consistent cash flows, rather than betting on penny stocks.

A lot of folks downplay the role of advisors until being burnt by their own emotions. I remember couple summers back, after my lengthy divorce, I needed a good boost to help my business stay afloat, hence I researched for license advisors and came across someone of due diligence, helped a lot to grow my reserve notwithstanding inflation, from $275k to approx. $850k so far.

My biggest irk with ETFs is the lack of optimization;changes in any given stock in the ETF can drag your portfolio down. While dividends can provide immediate income, the true power lies in the compounding effect over many years. I have a 3 fund portfolio consisting of 33% S&P, 33% Total stock, and 33% international. Don’t be confuse buying the dip in a bear market, with guaranteed future returns. Just because that company is down 60%+ from ATH does NOT make it a sound long-term investment. Make sure you’re investing in great companies. kudos to Sonia campbell

Munger and Buffett have both achieved an incredible feat with Berkshire. They've turned thousands to billions, and have made a lot of people wealthy in the process. Most people are either impatient or do not comprehend the power of compound interest. But for the ordinary Joe, I believe it is preferable to just wait and invest in the S&P 500, which is safe but takes a very long time-many years. Is NVIDIA a safe buy to outperform the market this year? I'm tired of these new buys every week, just to make up some assets with low percentage on my $136k portfolio and try to keep everything around 10%.

Yes! but still make your own research. And I would avoid the index funds, mutual funds, or specific stocks for the time being. The 5% fixed incomes are the safest bet for now. Or hire/ work with a good market strategist. You’re safer that way

Yeah, financial advisors could make a lot of difference, particularly in a market such as this. Stocks are pretty unstable at the moment, but if you do the right math, you should be just fine. Bloomberg and other finance media have been recording cases of folks gaining over 250k just in a matter of weeks/couple months, so I think t hi here are a lot of wealth transfer in this downtime if you know where to look. I have been using an FA since 2019, and I return at least $121k ROI, and this does not include capital gain.

The issue is most people have the "I want to do it myself mentality" but not equipped enough for a crash, hence get burnt, no offense. The market is not necessarily a rollercoaster if you know your way around the market, there are various opportunities in the present market to accrue good profit, If you are not too savvy with the market, just buy and hold on strong companies with good earnings, or consult with advisors on ETFs and actively managed funds. that’s what works for my spouse and I. We've made over 30% capital growth minus dividends.

Hey Hamish. I’ve listened to your podcast a bunch with Brendan and have been a long term viewer and enjoyer of his videos. Just a little feedback on the video from a first time watcher. Really found the video clunky and it was clear you were pushing the advertisement of stockopaedia throughout. I understand this is your income but maybe try to make it a little more subtle? Found it incredibly obvious you were taking points of thought just so you could link it back to the video and your ad. I didn’t really enjoy the video overall, I wouldn’t be inclined to click on your profile and continue watching other videos, as I would other thoughtful videos with subtle ads within. As an investor I’m sure you can appreciate having a long term and compounding point of view and not chasing short term gains (really pushing ads to increase your personal revenue) Hopefully you’re objective enough to take this criticism on board and will benefit from it, hopefully I didn’t come across too much of a wanker.
