A breakdown of how capitalism impacts the ants' psychology in A Bug's life. Flick embodies the plight of the everyday employee. He works tirelessly for a group that doesn't care about his existence. Pixar demonstrates to the audience the negative impacts of capitalism. Poor working conditions and the threat of violence force the ants into subservience. After diversifying their workplace with different kinds of insects, they empower themselves. Recognizing our value can be difficult in a job that takes our labor for granted. Flick's unbending will to uplift his colleagues is a message we can all get behind. So many amazing people worldwide don't get the credit they deserve. Collectivizing, voting, and unionizing are effective ways to advocate for workers' rights.

Something else that I think is interesting in explaining the whole dynamic of this movie's commentary on Capitalism, is regarding Flik's character growth, and how it's more than just "The liar revealed/odd one out has a bunch of unique ideas but everyone else just sees him as the constant screw-up." When Flik's lie is revealed, the Queen accuses him of putting himself before the rest of the colony. But is she entirely wrong? Flik is introduced as having a bunch of great ideas with the intentions of benefitting the rest of the colony, BUT with said great ideas comes the need to take full ownership of them (both with the positive and negative outcome). After Flik's harvesting invention accidentally dislodges the offering stone and sends all the Grasshoppers' food falling off into the river, when Hopper is coming down on Atta with his whole "First rule of leadership: EVERYTHING is your fault!", he fails to stand up for her and admit that it was his accident. Plus, when Flik finally learns that the "warrior bugs" he summoned were really circus bugs, and he begs them not to leave him in the dust, his logic is not rooted in "Our colony is in trouble!" but rather "This mistake will taint my image forever!" It's at the end when Flik truly shows real bravery and selflessness, when his pretend bird goes down, and he stands up for Atta and admits to Hopper that it was HIS idea (even if it does mean he takes a beating for it). But right after that, he goes even further to show how much he values the colony when he gets back up and gives his "Ants are not meant to serve grasshoppers" speech, saying that he's seen the ants accomplish some amazing things (including annually gathering food for themselves and Hopper). Yes, when he praises the very same colony that once shunned and ridiculed him for being the constant screw-up who only slowed down their progress, he's really showing how he values them and believes that they are a group worth rooting for, rather than just an audience for him to flaunt all his great ideas to! And if Flik was really just a showman who only cared about getting recognition for his ideas, he would have taken up P.T. Flea's offer at the end to go on tour with the other circus bugs. But instead, he decides to remain with his colony, even when it's not like he even (explicitly) gets boosted to any special ranking in the colony; sure they respect him and Atta shows recognizes his value (apart from subtle hints of romance), but he's just happy to be part of the colony who now sees how much he has to offer them.

Wow thanks for such a thoughtful comment. I love what you said about Flik not being a generic outcast character. He really is invested in his creations, but unsure of how to utilize them correctly. When he decides to stay in the end always gets me. Even though the colony ostracized him, he knows they were acting primarily out of fear.
