HGA, Hybrid Grading Approach is a sports card grading company that focuses on implementing AI alongside human grading. HGA has had its ups and downs among collectors, and currently viewed as behind the big 4 in grading (PSA, SGC, BGS, and CSG). Recently the owner of the Corbin Carroll 1/1 Topps Chrome Sapphire rookie graded their card with HGA and it caused a lot of opinions online. In this video we discuss HGA, second year cards, if $500 cards can be "grail cards", and more!

I always thought a grail card was subjective based on the collector. For years, mine was the Vince Carter Sgt. Carter mem/auto from 2000 Fleer Force, I eventually bought it for $200 last year. That card was the product hit, it was advertised on the box and in Beckett, and I ripped two boxes around 2002 looking for it.. Fleer Force was an awesome product but I never hit it. Ive been collecting ever since, but never had the disposable income to pony up to get the card until last year, and i got it! I still think of it as a grail, but see y'all's point. But, if a low income card collector is looking at a grail, their viewpoint is gonna be way different than a collector who goes to the National and has all the connections.

That is an awesome story. This is Scott responding, and I had a few specific cards that were always on the mid 2000s Beckett magazine covers and backs that I drooled over and could never afford. Nowadays, I could probably buy them for a few hundred dollars. You may have convinced me to look into it!

I think a grail card has to be either a very rare card that is hard to find and obtain or a card that is priced beyond your ability to purchase it at the time. The hunt and the struggle to obtain that card gives the grail term meaning. I think I would trust PSA, SGC, BGS, CSG, and HGA to be able to authenticate any card, so if the card is a 1/1, you should be be able to price it wherever you want as you have the only one in existence. With that said, I would have most likely used PSA to grade it for authenticity, protection for the card, and the most highly recognized grading company for a card with that price point. Rookie cards are going to retain the most value for a card, but I think second and third year cards with a story to them are overlooked and one I would prefer to keep in my PC.

I totally agree on PSA. It just seems silly to fight it right now. As far as grails go, I’ve spent over a year searching for specific cards and finally landed them for under $100. Very satisfying.

Grail is based on the person's budget 1st and foremost. Thereafter the rest is subjective. So many labels. 20 years ago we never labeled things. Now it's Gen z, x, y blah blah blah everything in this world has a label, have fun and go after whatever it is you have for a grail and share it with others to enjoy.

HGA also no with others grade more harsh than PSA. Idk if any will catch up to PSA values, I would personally like to see it. No way would I spend a bag on a PSA 10 without having it in my hands to look over, I have seen some 💩 that they coin a 10 when I know other companies would not. I guess PSA is like a Monopoly 🤷🏻‍♂️

A holy Grail to me a card isn’t always about the money it’s about you really really wanted it like when I was a kid I wanted the 89 upper deck Ken Griffey Junior I never ever got it because it cost too much money. My dad would never buy it for me, but when I got older I definitely bought it and to me it was one of my holy Grail cards that shouldn’t have to have a money thing on $500 or $5000 because to some collectors $500 is a lot of money to others $5000 is nothing that’s drop in the bucket But to many people it’s different

Personal grails are relative based on budget and interests. I wanted a nice Trout auto forever, and I finally bought a nice gold /25 Topps 87 design auto this year. It was about $500. For my budget, it was a personal grail. For others it would be a cheap card, and for still others it may be something they couldn't afford .

my grail is a bernie williams bowman tiffany rookie card PSA10 . card is maybe worth 100 dollars, which doesn't matter to me, as i was a huge fan of Bernie and honestly the yankees wouldnt have won those world series without him. he is completely underrated and should have been considered into the hall of fame. some may think im crazy, but thats what is great about this hobby... second..people put waaaayyyyyyyy too much emphasis into grading card companies. all of them do a few things, authenticate, and grade the cards condition. it should NOT matter which company they choose. people are insane to pay 10 times the actual card value just cause it says PSA. its getting stupid.
