Damn, I was using an i7-3770k and a P67 board in my living room PC along with a GTX 1080. It did a fine job. Unfortunately the motherboard died last year and it took the 3770k along with it. I had the 3770k delidded and used LM compound... it was a good bin and it could hit 4.8GHz with less than 1.4v. I was proud that I had recycled my old P8P67 WS Revolution board and happy that I got a bit over 10 years out of it.

just upgraded my old i5 2500 pc to a i7 3770 for around $20. boy oh boy, the performance upgrade is totally noticable.

I have a I5 3570k and wondering is it worth it to upgrade? I know this chip will be worthless in a few years so I don't want to invest any more money in this architecture.

still rocking my old i7 3770k + 16gb 1600mhz + 1660 Super 6GB I see no reason to upgrade since 99% of modern games are so boring everything else working perfectly fine.. editing almost everyday.. both video and audio. I haven't felt any "slowness" yet. the irony is that when I was younger I always wanted the newest hardware to play the newest games cause games used to be so much fun back then.. but now that I can actually afford any computer I want as an adult I see nothing that is actually interesting enough to upgrade for.. thats god with his sick sense of humor

I'm planning to build a pc with the same components as yours. I only play competitive games like Dota 2, CS2 and maybe Skyrim and GTA V. I don't think I need to go higher than this.

1:35 exactly, that's one of the reasons why I upgraded from an 4440 to 4770 (4770 was a lot cheaper than K models and 4790, I also have an 1650 too, MSI OCV1 GDDR6 model)

Back then I got a 3550, and it was completely fine for my needs. The 3770 certainly had/has more longevity though, with those extra threads.

@@burntoutelectronics who cares? New games are just garbage console ports from decade ago,They dont even look while playing like 💩 I still play and love those older games from few years (Ac Odyssey Wd2 Fc5 deus Ex MD FH4,5 BF1,v etc)

Same, 3770k + 760GTX. Got the Ferrari Gigabyte board at the time with Thunderbolt, WiFi, & Bluetooth. Still great for me. Packed in an amazing corsair 600T case. Can't believe they stopped making those. For games typically play decade or older gog titles. Eventually will turn it into a linux box as Win7 support completely drops.

There are still a lot of 3770 pc's out in the wild. A LOT of people don't play modern games, they might play a facebook game but mostly use a pc for social media, watching video etc.

@@jims_junkyou really need to go beyond even 8th gen intel to kick the 3770. Advancements really dropped dead for quite some time until more cores began being added again

I know I am 8 months behind but I just saw this excellent video. In May of 2012 I built a system with an i5 3570 on a Gigabyte z77x-ud3h motherboard, 8 gigs of ddr3 Crucial Ballistix and a Radeon 6950 (2 gigs of VRAM). In 2014 I changed to a GTX 970 and in 2016 I added another 8 gigs of memory. It has done everything I needed it to do including gaming. But lately I am getting some artifacting plus some failures on my motherboard so I will be building a new system. The i5 3570 was a great choice as it has been going strong for 12 years. Money well spent.

Thank you, I always appreciate the kind words. I have to agree with you, Intel at this point was knocking it out of the park. I also was using the 3770 as my workbench PC's cpu until recently when I upgraded it to a 4770. I got the mobo and cpu for a video and afterwards figured why not. I even edit some videos on there as well.

These processors were beasts,both the i5 and i7 are still pretty good, but if you can then please review the i3 3220, it's an underrated chip.

I use an i3 3220 in one of my home theatre systems, low power, very capable, and for only 50p in the UK it’s an absolute bargain.

0:12 The i7 turbo speeds are 3.9 GHz on 1/2 cores, 3.8 on 3 cores and 3.7 on 4 cores. Same thing for the i5, except offset by 100 MHz.

In 2012 the i5 was more than fast enough but I think if you’re trying to keep using a platform this old, it’s worth spending the $30 or so on eBay to pickup a 3770, I’d call 6 threads the minimum for anything beyond basic web browsing in 2023 and with these used prices on 2nd-7th gen parts it’s a no brainer to scoop up a cheap i7

I used my 3570k for years, mild overclock to 4.3GHz if I remember right, still did very well nearly 10 years later until I replaced it with Ryzen. I'm not sure if Sandy/Ivy bridge were just excellent, or if Intel didn't really make any significant leaps for over 5 years making them look good.

i look for ivy bridge cpus to go back up in value in the next 5-10 years as its the last generation with full support for windows xp , its true xp can work with haswell but ivy bridge was last gen with easy full support

I have the i5 4570s and the i7 4790. The i5 system is very small with a small unique heatsink so the i7 would overheat inside it. My main rig is a Ryzen 9 5900x 16gb 1060 6gb

You can get a used 1080 ti 11gb for under 200 or a brand new 3060 12gb model single fan for under 300 or double and triple fan models for little more than 300

Where I'm from the I7 is usually close to 3x the price of the I5, or about 50USD over 20USD converted. I'm thinking to upgrade an I3 3220 so I'm a little on the hedge on what to go for, as the PC is a home office/home theatre and vintage emulator machine(arcade, NES, SNES, PSX, N64 etc...) or just keep it as is...

I 'Liked' the video; I ran a similar test with a 4th gen Xeon, with and without HT. This would also eliminate the cache differences between scenarios. I found that the HT was not that much of help for gaming, and I tested Apex Legends, Fortnite, Battlefield V. I for one think that if gaming is your deal, then you can stay with an i5.

Thanks! I agree however for $20 on ebay, if you still had a 3570 might be worth it to upgrade. But yeah both are still very usable today

I am on a 3770k right now pushing a 5700xt with 32GB of 2400 MT ram. I dropped it in a about three years ago from a 3570 to get me a few years more out of my PC. If the PC was working to make me a paycheck then it is far, far behind on productivity apps, but it is fine for games, playing whatever I like at 1440p(tomb raider trilogy, subnautica, RE 2 3 and 4, hitman 3. The only thing pushing me to a new build is me, not frame rates.

I hope that voltage detection is bugging out on cpu-z because 2.6v definitely would have fried these cpus in a matter of hours. Like at max turbo these would probably be stable at half that at 1.35v much like my old I5 2500k at 4 ghz its rock solid stability at 4 ghz there.

Had a 3770 non K oc'ed to 4.1GHz all cores (limited unlock +4) with a Z series mobo (Gigabyte Sniper)

why 4.1 though? should it not be 4.3, since the max turbo is 3.9. or was it counted from the lowest all-core turbo (3.7)?

@@JamesSmith-sw3nk Not BCLK overclocking but "Limited" Unlock feature for Sandy and Ivy Bridge processors where you can increase the multiplier +4 if you're using a Z series motherboard, hence the name "Limited".

Hmm I'm currently building an overkill WinXP retro PC with an i5 3570. Maybe I will consider using i7 3770 instead and disable HT for my overkill WinXP retro PC.
