A new disease called "cannabis hyperemesis syndrome" is on the rise due to increased marijuana use. In this video we explain the science behind what is going on. Some scientists think that the legalization of marijuana may be under threat, other think awareness is all the matters - let's see how it all plays out.

Regular smoker for over 50 years I had something similar a few months back that happened every few days for a few weeks. I didn't see a doctor haven't seen one for decades. Have a variety of strains to switch between to reduce tolerance. After realizing it was the gg 4 every time I was sick I then started inspecting the inside of the buds closely. What I found was small amounts of mold. And mold can cause headaches stomach cramps and vomiting. I composted what was left from that plant. Haven't been sick since.

CHS is just reefer maddeness all over again. I've had stomach issues since I was born. A male with an Eating Disorder. I've been trying to get a diagnosis for 30 years, and nothing better than acid reflux. Now whenever I go to the ER for vomiting, they ask if I smoke weed, and if I say yes they immediately call it CHS. Even when I try to explain that this has been going on LONG before, I even knew what weed was. Nothing. If you vomit and smoke weed, it's CHS. Of course, cases rise when you call ANYTHING dealing with vomiting as CHS.

My family has a history of addiction, so I refused to have any meds that would chemically hook me. Ended up taking my mother’s gummies in the hope that they’d help, which they almost instantly did. Never was a drinker, never smoked or anything, let alone took a gummy before that. I’m not saying it “fixed me” but my quality of live hasn’t been this good since I was 12. It’s all fun in games untill your kidneys shut down. Or your heart starts to beat irregularly. People who have contracted chs should avoid weed all together. It took me years of stomach aches and kidney pains to realize what was causing it. I stopped smoking for over a year felt great was able to eat normally and put back on weight. Then I started smoking again and instantly the stomach aches came back and I couldn’t eat. Kidneys hurting all the time. Now I’m here 2 weeks sober and never going to look back. To each there own but your right don’t over do it stick to smoking bud and not dabs. Make sure your weed is clean and from a reputable source. But this is a serious problem coming up in the places weed is legal. And drs are not diagnosing this. I don’t know if they don’t believe it or if they are using marijuana as a way to keep people sick.

It wouldn't be a problem if it is treated like a drug, as it should be. It has both narcotic and therapeutic properties, which makes it much closer to being a controlled drug. Drug trials are routine, and that is the formal way of doing it. We used to sell opium freely in the early industrial era and paid a massive price, probably why we became so hostile to weed.

I couldn’t even go into a store, or a corner shop, not even a drive-thru. Pretty pathetic, but real life. I’ve always had some social anxiety within me, but over time it progressed to that. This happened for me too. But I’ve been able to use it again since I started looking into the terpenes of weed and being VERY careful about what I use. Now I stick very exclusively to indicas (bc they just tend to have a terpene profile that works better for me) and I also try to find ones that have CBD in them (like 1:1s). Having CBD in there seems to help neutralize the unpleasant THC effects. That and of course making sure to not ingest too much right off the bat. They make edibles that are infused (later in the process) with strains with specific terpenes and extra CBD and those have been a godsend. I don’t have to smoke and I can tightly control my dose. The process of making edibles apparently ruins terpenes, so the only way to re-include them is by adding something later in the process I guess. Honestly I’m so glad I did give it another try, too, because cannabis helps me SUBSTANTIALLY with my mental illness, physical pain, and sleep issues. But yeah I’d love to know more about why that change happens as we get older!!!!

Warm baths offer temporary relief. Your best bet is to stop cold turkey until your symptoms go away. Then if you miss it you can do like I did and use in moderation. Avoid gravity bongs, dabs, anything that people use to force as much weed in their body as fast a possible. Its unnecessary and way more likely to cause a CHS problem.

It's one of two things: 1) Inexperienced cannabis users are consuming far too much, causing them to become dizzy and disoriented, resulting in nausea and vomiting which is actually pretty common, especially with giant collage sized bongs. 2) Chemical fertilizers that haven't been properly flushed from the plant are being ingested, which some people have a severe sensitivity towards. Mind you, these chemicals are carcinogenic and make the weed taste terrible, and burn unevenly with black ash. Always go for clean, well flushed, organic flower and avoid larger industrial scale producers that will cut corners at scale.

I’ve had 2 CHS episodes. The last episode was the worst. I had severe abdominal pain that not even pooping could help. Eventually, there was nothing in my system to poop out because of the constant need to vomit, which then became dry heaving. I felt like I was dying and sounded like I was dying to everyone else 😅. All of this went on for a few hours until I went to the ER. There, they gave me an IV and some sort of steroid pills to ease the swelling in my esophagus. Felt better after another few hours and then went home. All of this happened overnight. CHS affects a percentage of heavy smokers. I was taking bong rips several times a day, just feeling medium. I also didn’t drink enough water throughout my day to support this habit. Be careful with how much you smoke. You can still smoke (at least I can), but everything in moderation. Drink lots of water and eat your green vegetables 👍🏼 There are 3 stages: Prodromal, Hyperemetic, and Recovery. If you are feeling symptoms, chill out on the weed and purge on water. Don’t overthink if you might have one either because anxiety may be able to trigger more symptoms. You're body is most likely digesting, or maybe you ate something recently that is upsetting your stomach. Whatever you do, resist the urge to throw up as much as you can when in these moments.

I'm Dutch and I like a joint every once in a while as well ;). Marihuana has been condoned here in the Netherlands for almost 40 years. Yet, the Dutch do not know many cases of Cannabis hyperemesis syndrome. After watching the video I did a little bit of reseach about what's known in th Netherlands on the websites of the Dutch drug-information institutes and even institutes that combat drug-use or treat addiction in the Netherlands, like Jellinek, state that cases are very rare, though it might be that there are more cases, but misdiagnozed. Furthermore they state that taking a warm bath can relieve the symptoms and quiting the use of marihuana immediately stops the symptoms all together. Excessive showering and hot bathing is also done often by people who have developed CHS. Still, it hardly appears here, even though smoking or ingesting marihuana products is relatively socially accepted here and has been done for a long time. Pharmaceutic companies and many doctors actually would like a full legalization, due to the potentials for new medication that aren't allowed to be researched at this moment. Studies on especially CBD that have been done do show amazing resultst for cancer, Parkinsons, Alzheimer and depressed patiënts and people with ADHD (and more). I'm speculating why there is such a rise of CHS cases in countries that only recently condoned or legalized marihuana, like the US, Australia and Canada, compared to countries that have condoned/legalized it for decades, like the Netherlands and Portugal. It might be that the composition in American marihuana is different, like way more THC or CBD. I know the marihuana here is checked here to ensure not too much THC or CBD are present. This system is quite flawed though: there's only a check on the sold marihuana from stores (which we call "coffeeshops") and not on the level of production (which ironically is illegal). So there's a lot of weed and hasj going around that exceeds the allowed limits. Still, most of the marihuana products aren't contaminated (much) with other chemicals. Many other countries like Spain and Portugal also have systems of condoning/legalizing marihuana use and also here there is strict supervision in the composition and distribution (better and stricter than in the Netherlands). Maybe this is different in the US and Canada (and Australia)? I honestly don't know much about the production, composition, consumption, sale or checking procedures of marihuana outside of Europe. So I can only guess here. Or possibly there are behavioural differences, like perhaps American users just use more marihuana or in higher dosis in one sitting than the Dutch, which might explain the difference in cases? The average Dutch(wo)man has a more physically active lifestyle than the average American (we cycle and walk A LOT and cities and villages are designed to suit cyclists and pedestrians rather than cars). Also, most Portuguese walk a lot and have a relatively active lifestyle. Maybe having a better stamina and physical condition reduces the chance of developing CHS? It does work that way with many other ailments, both physical as biochemical. I mean, eating a lot of meat and having a sedentary lifestyle increases the chance on heart failure and arthritis more than eating loads of meat, but exercizing a lot (cholesterol and vit A)(though switching up some of that meat for veggies would be waaay healthier :P). Spending all your time indoors increases the likelyhood of a depression more than when you take a long hike outside in the sun every day (vit D). Maybe CHS works similar? Is there any information about other binding (behavioural/genetic) factors in the known cases? Or is there a specific group of users that is statistically more likely to get it? Or maybe even environmental influences? Or perhaps American doctors are just easier to freak out over drug related ailments? Or the European doctors don't freak out enough and therefore miss cases? Maybe the Americans visit their hospitals straight away when vomiting, while most Europeans have to visit their physicians first for non-life-threatening ailments, before being send to the hospital? I don't know I do hope you guys let us know more, once more information becomes available, I'm curious :). Love the channel, keep it up :D

You have s lot of interesting questions. Definitely worthy of some research. As I understand. There's a big difference in what types are accessible and how potent. Between North America and Europe. When I was younger, I would occasionally smoke weed at parties. Every single time I smoked while drunk. I puked, as soon as the weed started worked. Whereas if I only started drinking after being Stoned, I never had a problem. Don't know if that's a general thing. Our alcohol culture is pretty insane, and cannabis is illegal. So we Don't have many studies from here.

These ideas are interesting and probably close to the truth. Considering states where recreational weed is legal, the THC% can be quite high! Some states regulate the percent of TCH available for recreational vs medical use, where some states limit the type of product. For example, in my state, I can purchase 97% TCH in a vape, but I can't get 40mg TCH per gummy, and can only get 10mg THC per gummy. In another state, I can get concentrates (I'm new school, so I've heard "concentrates" described by old school people as being 'more potent than hash', and it comes in a form you have to melt without lighting on fire). So, that + consider that the average American simply has more body fat and more sedentary lifestyle. Marijuana is stored in your fat, and bod fat effects how much you hold, and how much longer you hold onto it. Losing or gaining weight can also effect how the high feels/lasts. If you have less THC overall, and the body isn't storing it as much, you won't be as likely to get sick from it. It IS hypothesized that the higher potency of THC is why we're seeing this more now, but it was possibly existent, but extremely rare in the past before marijuana was being bred and refined these ways. I was morbidly obese and also was getting sick all of the time. I was doing a bunch of research into this. It wasn't the marijuana in my case, but I lost weight and cut back. Anecdotally, I've noticed that the weed does effect me differently now that I'm more active and have way less body fat.

Many years ago, after a modification to my antidepressant regiment, before I realized what was going on, I had already begun experiencing nerve issues near my upper arms and legs. The day I found out, I had smoked a bowl to help with my nerves, and as a part of my routine, begun my morning meds. Very shortly after the pills settled in my stomach, I immediately and forcefully vomited medications that would have likely made my emerging serotonin syndrome worse to the point of seeking hospitalization. I was down for a few days afterward and made a healthy recovery without burdening our healthcare system listening to irrational patients while I drank cheap coffee in a group therapy room for a few days. Because of cannabis stigma, we may never know if the silent minority of people who are helped by cannabis is actually a silent majority when it comes to lower healthcare expenditures.

I had to quit back in 2021 because of CHS. I was using a pen everyday for 8 months straight. One night I did my typical routine and suddenly felt really shaky, weak, and sick to my stomach. The pain and extreme nausea lasted for a week straight until I finally went to the ER and got some IVs. If you do smoke, please stay hydrated and TAKE TOLERANCE BREAKS. A couple years later I still can’t smoke without the nausea and weed induced anxiety kicking in quickly

I'm the exact opposite situation. 20 years of trying to get a diagnosis for my eating disorder, now everyone wants to call CHS. Even stopped smoking and vomiting increased. Weed was the only medication that works. So I have to continue smoking. But now I can't see any doctor or admit I smoke or else they just believe I have CHS. I will have to live my life undiagnosed solely due to propaganda of CHS.

I really don't understand "if they stop vomiting in the shower, it must be CHS." Do people not understand a cold or hot bath can help shock you out of a lot? A hot shower can reduce a heart attack. A cold shower has been used to cure hangovers for a millennia. Ei vomiting caused my alcohol. CHS is completely made up. We are the first generation to only be eating processed food. There's thousands of studies showing how the unhealthy food we eat is causing adverse effects. Two Crack pot studies pointing to weed as the culprit and everyone jumps on board. More people are smoking, and more people are open about it. Correlation does not mean causation.

One day I couldn’t stop throwing up, went to urgent care and they told me I had CHS. they said more than half of the patients who came in uncontrollably vomiting were doing so due to weed, specifically the highly concentrated weed we have today. I quit that day. It was horrible. I couldn’t hold down water for a couple days. I couldn’t hold down food for 5. I lost almost 30 lbs over two weeks. Please mention the temperature symptoms! When you have CHS you almost always CRAVE heat like a warm bath. Like uncontrollably crave it and it temporarily relieves the nausea when nothing else works. Its one of the ways you can tell it apart from other illnesses with similar symptoms. I had a CHS episode way back before ER docs knew what to call it. I still smoke but less volume and so far have been feeling well for 5 years since my episode. I love to tell my friends since often they have never heard of it. I use it both recreationally and medicinally. Because of this I treat it like I treat alcohol or other migraine medications, respectively. Everything in moderation. I use it socially, or when I'm trying to wind down after a rough day, like I would with a glass of wine. If I'm having a migraine, I only take enough to manage the pain, which, for me, is low enough that I don't really feel high. For me, microdosing has been very helpful. 3mg edibles is enough to relieve my pain (or one short hit from my pen if I need instant relief), and 5mg is enough to get me buzzed without being blitzed.

Modern strains (especially legal strains) have done their best to jack up the THC and dropping the CBD content as much as possible. My doctor misdiagnosed me with this. Only had 1 symptom of it, vomiting. It wasnt as extreme as the disease describes, it was random, and almost always before or during work. He was a crappy doctor. I told him, I didnt think it was that, he didnt wanna listen. It ended up stopping when I quit my job. My job at the time was highly toxic, and I would get screamed at by managers and customers, daily. The scheduling manager also decided to make my life as inconvenient as possible, going as far as to say I can have a day off for an appointment, and then changing the schedule the literal day before to make me work that day. They also gossiped and spread lies bout me to other coworkers. Once I quit that job, everything was better. And I could still keep smoking (within moderation) 😊 He refused to change the diagnoses by the way, even after being proven wrong. He just dismissed it as weed addiction, and that I was being an "uncoroperative patient". Im in Colorado btw. So based on anti-weed doctors, Id question the prevalence.

Yeah, the best path to go forward is legalization and **control**! There are norms on how much alcohol you can consume. There are classification norms. (Like, there can't be 70% alcohol beer). There's testing and certification, so that methanol doesn't appear in drinks. If the same is done with cannabis - we can reduce the risk and crack down on illegal cannabis

This is interesting. I was easily smoking as much as 4 joints/day in my early 20s. I had a med card, and convinced myself that cannabis was the best route to helping with depression. However, one day, I fell extremely ill after smoking. I got the spins, felt extremely hot, got tachycardia, and spent a good part of the night vomiting. I had had a few bad experiences from overdoing it over the years, but nothing came even close to that. It took me a while to smoke again after that, and most of the time when I would try to from then on (especially when taking edibles), those feelings would return even when I consumed very little. Being high became synonymous with extreme anxiety and nausea, and to this day I can't take more than a hit of a joint every couple months (and I usually regret it when I do). What's more, I became a far more anxious person afterward. I had always had bouts of depression, but had never really experienced anxiety until that point-and unfortunately it's something that has stuck with me. It actually seems rather similar to PTSD in some ways. Anyway, what you're describing does sound pretty similar to what I experienced, and I've never really had a potential explanation for it until now, other than assuming I had some sort of mental breakdown.

Legalizing it isn't an issue, it deserves to be as legal as alcohol is. What IS the issue, however, is how prevalent in our culture marijuana is considered to be this cure-all miracle drug with zero consequences or side effects from consumption. It's so heavily ingrained into the culture at large. Snoop promotes smoking every day, Seth Rogen promotes using it every day, but nobody ever promotes using it in moderation. There isn't a song about maybe only smoking on the weekend or a few times a month. The other problem is how much marijuana has changed. I want to say the average thc % in the 70s was around 3-5% while now in modern times it's about 30%. Even worse, you can consume concentrates and get 70-95% thc in dabs and pens. We've basically experienced the difference in medieval hard ciders and meads that had like 3% ABV which was so weak kids were given hard cider and peasants drank beers during the day while working the field to extremely hard liquor that is 70%+ ABV. Weed is no longer just a plant grown in the dirt. It is a genetically modified organism that we've been altering to maximize potency for over 50 years at this point. TL;DR is that weed being legal is okay, but the side effects and potential harm need to be discussed and properly warned to the public.

Very true. Land Race or weed that grow s naturally in nature usually has much more CBD and related compounds and not so much THC. We have hybridized it to become much more psychoactive by breeding higher amounts of THC and lowers amounts of CBD. Although in a medical sense THC does seem to much more potent compared to CBD in many circumstances. But we have definitely bread it to be more of a drug rather than a medicine.

I really appreciate this kind of approach to science, though you are favor of smoking personally, you pursue objectivity and inform us to be critical and aware, you are awesome ❤

My sister has to vomit just when exposed to the smell of marijuana. I had to pull my car over to let her vomit when the smell came wafting into my car via the AC vent from the car in front of us. The doctors say it's an allergy. She's also very sensitive to prescription drugs and a little affects her like a larger dose.

I was diagnosed with CHS, and I had to quit smoking cold turkey. Symptoms disappeared the day I stopped, and I've never felt better since quitting.

if we were to treat this as an argument, then the counterpoint would probably be that relegalizing alcohol was also a mistake (I do not believe this in anyway)

Wine and beer okay but alcohol percentages above, let's say 20% should be illegal, in any country! Only when it's mixed in restaurants and pubs should it be legal.

@@meat8130 Not everywhere. Please stop acting like just because your polity has achieved normalcy regarding cannabis that others have. Many of us are still in the struggle.

I’ve had this before but didn’t go to the hospital. It wasn’t like crazy bad but it def took me out. It took about 7 days to feel better. I noticed when I smoke vapes it increases the symptoms, it comes faster, harder and quicker. My body hurt so bad hot baths is what helped the most. And the rising was the worst for the nausea. Chills sweats. I am more aware when I smoke now but it can be tough to not go too crazy sometimes. I am feeling some nausea signs again so thats my sign to cut back on the number of puffs or designate a specific time when I can smoke. If you’re a chronic user, please moderate so you lower your chances of this cause it does SUCK
