That's true! I noticed international food here are modified for Dutch tastes while in the major cities of the world you tend to find more authentic flavours for a cheaper price even. There's some good food but if you compare to any of the major cities in the world the food culture in Amsterdam is definitely lagging behind in terms of taste, price and options.

Ah yeah we hear bad things about medical care here... It sucks that you have to pay for insurance out of your own pocket (in Canada basic coverage is free). So far Lilian just went to the doctor once and he was German and seemed quite competent 😉Will keep you posted on that! But the stereotype I hear is that GPs are very bad and will only recommend paracetamol for everything...

I'm a Dutch doctor (not a GP, but I still might therefore be biased) ;) but I feel that the medical care in the Netherlands is very professional, inclunding the GP's. I can imagine however that the Dutch GP's are different from what people are used to in other countries. Dutch doctors indeed tend to be quite hesitant with prescribing. antibiotics compared to countries like Spain or Italy. That's not because they're unwilling or incompetent, but because they're trying to prevent antibiotic resistance (which is becoming quite a big problem worldwide). Anyhow, I'm glad you're enjoying your time in the Netherlands and hope you're future experiences with Dutch doctors will be better :)

If you're sick, it's one week in bed if you go to the doctor en takes antibiotics. If you takes paracetamol, it will be one week to, without becoming resistant to antibiotics.

@@diederik3659 - a Dutch MD once told me that his professor had taught him that a flue with antibiotics is over in two weeks but with paracetamol in 14 days. Given that MD's age group, I could forgive him a bit, but considering where the science was at the time, there was really no excuse to repeat this in a client's consultation. There is a related problem in your comment. "Antibiotics" (AB) originally were an evolutionary development of yeasts/molds to battle bacteria. Yes, penicillin was invented by evolution and the old Egyptians already used it to treat ulcerated wounds (in the form of rubbing the mold from a slice of bread into the ulceration). So the general position should be that AB only should be used in the treatment of bacterial infections. Long term AB use may open up to yeast/mold/fungal infections and to prevent these, long term AB use probably should be sided by "antimycotics" (AM). This leaves the elephant in the room: viral infections - most AB and AM do nothing against viruses. And this is where that MD should have gotten flack. There is anecdotal indication that one or two AB meds may have antiviral (AV) properties, but not enough to base treatment on. And there are anecdotal indications that some psychiatric meds have AV properties when "we" actually may not know why or how these work. The biggest issue in your comment is "becoming resistant to antibiotics". It's simple: "you" don't become resistant to AB, ever. The problem is that bacteria evolve very fast and become resistant. When you have an infection of a trillion bacteria of a single species (that's just a tiny bit), there are always individuals with a form of resistance. Kill most of these with a weak AB and what remains are the bacteria that are resistant. Kill most of these the first two days of AB intake and you killed maybe 80%, but don't finish the course as you feel better, so now you created resistance of these pathogens in/on your body to this AB. All medicine men prescribing AB like mad are criminals and all patients not finishing their courses are fools. Note that this story also applies to e.g. the antibacterial soap you use and that says "kills 96% of bacteria" - yeah right and the remaining 4% are extremely dangerous (read about MRSA), plus almost 100% of yeast/mold/fungal as well as viral pathogens survive that. This all however does not prove that the Dutch protocol is great. It misses important cases that initially present to them as "vague complaints". These are easily talked down as "between your ears", see a shrink instead of me. Then 10 years later the client dies of cancer (the battle for survival took 7 years and was lost).

In the NL, if you need medicine you have to beg and cry to your doctor, they have the tendency of not taking their patients seriously. Also, they don't have a preventive mentality when it comes to medicine so more often than not you will have to be very insistent to get any type of treatment

For sure, the food can be amazing and very diverse. It's just not good in the very touristic places, you need to know where to go and then it's usually cheaper as well!

I have a huge list of restaurants/winebars etc in Amsterdam so that I can always easily pick one that suits the mood ;) (even though we never eat out because we're always broke af, but hey, you get the idea ;p)

@@sumimaind Would disagree, never been to Tokyo so i cant speak on that. But the food in New York, London or Paris generally isn't great either. Much like Amsterdam and other tourist places there are some restaurants that serve amazing food but the majority is just ok & overpriced or even just bad/bland. I do agree those city's offer more food options, but it's not nearly as tasty as "the same" meal would be in the country it originated from. As for the food scene in the Netherlands and its diversity, i personally dont think it has to be very diverse. The current food scene perfectly showcases the Dutch history and alliances which adds to the authenticity of the culture.

What were some of the difficulties or differences?

@@LittleLulubee there were many, but to mention a few I'd say italians tend to be more outgoing/warm and very spontaneous, whereas dutchies can sometimes appear distant and cold, with a tendency to schedule their day very efficiently rather than living by the day. At the same time, I found Dutch people to tend to mind their own business in the streets, so that if something is wrong with your bike for instance they would let you solve it by yourself; italians may be more prone to come and help when you are experiencing troubles Finally, as an international student in Ams I often experienced how the city moves at two different speeds, conditional on whether you're a local or not: think of the housing market (it's super hard to get uni accommodation if you don't have contacts, whereas if you're Dutch you have most likely been registered on several websites for years and have gotten ahead of the long waiting times thanks to that), or public transport (which is free on weekdays for Dutch students, but internationals can't get any student discount, lol...). This being said, I apologize in advance for generalizing, and acknowledge that individual experiences are certainly varied!

(at least the locals were). Maybe it has to do with cold weather vs warm? But it’s definitely worth getting to live in a foreign country! Wonderful learning experience 😊

Hmm, yeah good question - we do love London and it has a lot of good things going for it. But it's very expensive, and we're enjoying being in a city that isn't as huge as London because it can get exhausting, and to be honest Brexit kind of ruled London out for us :/ But we're planning on visiting from time to time for sure! London has the best Indian food hands down, and after NYC the best bagels :)

Actually it's not like that at all. It's a more slow paced, cozy and beautiful city, very different from New York (which we love as well, but for different reasons). But sadly that's the image that some people have from it, because of the party tourists that only use the city for its legal weed and legal prostitution... But if you venture out of those small circles, there's so much more to it!

What international food have you tried exactly that doesn't taste great? Did you try Turkish, Surinamese, Chinese, Indonesian food, etc? All these cuisines you can find in the big major cities inc. Amsterdam. They are one of the best-tasting cuisines one can experience and it's also what the ethnic groups stick to at home. Do you really think that e.g Surinamers, Turks, Moroccans, etc. who live in the Netherlands only eat that bland stuff you're complaining about? You clearly don't know what you're talking about sis.
