Over 26 million of us have taken a DNA test in the past decade. This growing popularity of genetic testing has created worldwide databases that allow us to ask questions previously impossible to answer about our families, ancestry and health.
Stacey Dooley is meeting people across the UK who want to unlock mysteries hidden within their genetic code. Working with one of the UK’s leading geneticists, Professor Turi King, as well as genealogists, social workers and doctors, she uses the very latest DNA technology to reveal lost heritage, track down missing relatives and detect debilitating diseases before it is too late. #DNAFamilySecrets #iPlayer
All our TV channels and S4C are available to watch live through BBC iPlayer, although some programmes may not be available to stream online due to rights. This is so sad, but thanks to Ms. Judy, I learned a lot. I had no idea this happened. She also made the British government do a lot of research, which might help others. She's an amazing lady. ❤

This was a shameful episode. Legally married couples forcibly separated. The wives lost their citizenship by marrying them too.

I’m glad that through the advancement in dna some older folks are able to at least get some answers or a bit more knowledge on parts of their life that they probably never thought they would be able to decades ago

There are a lot of people, who have not done DNA tests and have no clue about their own family history and heritage. Stories passed down through families are often inaccurate where intentionally or not. The more people who participate, the more family connections can be made.

Simply taking a test isn't enough though, for a result to have any real value some research is needed to tie the matches together in a coherent and accurate family tree and matches have to work with each other but it often doesn't happen like that. The scenario is often someone having to work alone trying to piece things together as the dozens of matches they have messaged have failed to reply and their 3 generation tree based on the memories of an aged relative are fatally flawed and inaccurate.

Whatever the government were doing I do not believe a post war Ship’s Captain and crew would deliberately drown other sailors who had supported them throughout.

Hatred is a powerful and dangerous thing, it turns other humans into ‘others’. Humans are sadly pretty easy to control and manipulate, just look at the millions indoctrinated into and brainwashed by religion.

Just because boats weren't sunk, what is more telling is the chinese passengers were listed only as " cargo." Who is to ssy these men weren't thrown over board?

My father was an unpleasant man. He hated everyone but none more so than the Irish. I completed a family tree. I had a little Irish ancestry on my mother's side but none on my father's. I went back around 400 years. Then I took a DNA test. I am half Irish and half English. The parental results are included with the test. My mother showed as being half Irish and this was no surprise. My father showed as half Irish. With no Irish history in his tree and such a strong percentage of Irish, there is only one conclusion. I wonder if he knew? If he were alive today I would wave the results in his hateful gob. If nothing else, I get to support two teams in the six nations. Hoorah! Take the test.

Tragic period in the history of British government. I’m glad that they were able to give you peace with regards to his being safely taken back rather than killed. You’re a tough woman.

This has made me realize how not only my country (U.S.) but Britain as well were so scared of the Chinese in war time. The government thought they were protecting their interests and possibly their people too. War is terrible and is far reaching in its destruction.

I wonder why these men never wrote a letter to their family? And aren't there some medals left from their effort in WW2? Can't China trace these men in this time, after their arrival so many years ago? A very sad part of British history indeed, especially for the families. Thank you for sharing this! Love from Holland ❤

To painful to keep in touch with people you may never meet again. Just like black American soldiers who left women and children in uk weren't allowed to contact or to come back and be with them

@jemmajames6719 I think post-WW2 coincided with the rise of the communists, under Mao Tse Tung, in China. The China these men returned to was about to be violently torn apart. With millions dying of starvation in the process. They may have sought refuge in the British dominion of Hongkong. Especially if they could speak and write English.
