This was a perfect ending, Beast Boy grew up with the audience. We as the audience were forced to accept that the show is ending, the idea that these characters have grown up. Terra is our connection to season 2 (an earlier season) and our connection to a simpler time. We kept seeing Terra through reflections because she is just a reflection of what we want to see. My theory is that the changing monster is probably connected to her reappearance but the point is, the monster is life moving forewords as Beast Boy is stuck in the past. Slade’s reappearance is most likely connected to the idea that perhaps even his character changed after the Trigon arc. After selling out the planet to an evil demon and getting his body back, he was less about being evil and more about looking out for himself. Perhaps it’s a connection to the fact that Slade’s son in the comics was Jericho who showed up in Titans Together. Either way, the implication is that even Slade may have had some development offscreen since he wasn’t present for most of the season. Overall, the episode showed the audience that although things do change, and people (even people like Slade who we expect to stay the same) change, life goes on. Instead of chaining ourselves to the past, we must move forewords whether that be choosing to live a better life like Terra, or running with open arms into the uncertain future like Beast Boy.

Starfire needs to have her own story arc that's the key to a season 6. We don't know enough of starfire.

I was under the impression that Terra died and, in his grief, Beast Boy was imagining seeing her one last time.

Damn. That's a sad reality and an ending. I waited 2 months for a new episode, thinking 'there's no way it ends like that'. After 5 months, I forget about the show. So, thanks for the analysis.

I think the sense of closure wasn’t portrayed accurately because the “good memories” beast boy and Terra had were never accepted by both parties in things change. If Terra had remembered, been happy to see beast boy but tell him very clearly that she was happy with her new life away from hero/villain drama, beast boy would have accepted her point of view more willingly rather than being told he’s delusional and should go about his business... my point would still convey the “things change” message and bring closure to both parties whilst maintaining a healthy sense of friendship. Things change left us(or maybe just me) feeling like Terra despises beast boy for no reason, and as a kid especially I had no idea why she felt that way...

I dont think it was a bad episode, I also think it was a pretty good ending, Sometimes life is gonna let you down but Beast Boy powered through.

i’m pretty sure the show was supposed to go on. the show was not expecting a sudden cancellation. pretty sure in the unproduced season 6, beastboy was supposed move on from terra which is why you see him run out the door in the end of things change, and develop feelings for raven (which she has mutual feelings), starfire was supposed to be the main character of the season, blackfire was supposed to be the main villain of the season, the actual slade would have returned, starfire and robin’s relationship would have gotten into more detail, robin was supposed to become nightwing in the end, and the season would have a darker and mature tone.

Maybe Terra was afraid that her friends don't like her anymore after the things she have done. Or she only don't want to remember these things...

If it was the finale I wanted to see beast boy say, I love you by letting you go. Because it just raises more questions.

The only reason I don't accept this ending is because Starfire never got her own season arc. It's not fair. Robin got one, Cyborg got one, Raven got one, Beast Boy got one, EVEN TERRA GOT ONE AND SHE'S NOT EVEN A MAIN MEMBER OF THE TEAM. Starfire is the only member who didn't get a season dedicated to her and personally I just think that's unacceptable. It's a spit in the face to her and the fans.

When I was 10 I watched the whole series over 2 weeks and I felt so empty after seeing the ending. I went as far as reading fanfiction and going to comic book stores and reading the entire original series. But now looking back on the series as a adult I can say it somehow ties everything together well.

Assuming this girl is or used to be Terra, the main message of Things Change can also apply to her current life as a schoolgirl. I feel it's only a matter of time before her past catches up with her and this new life of hers changes forever whether she wants it to or not.

plot twist: this was meant to be the ending to the show. the whole it was cancelled was just a lie created so that we could question if she was ever really there. although I do like to think that trouble in Tokyo is a sequel to this.

I came over here from watching Teen Titans Go. Used to watch Teen Titans Go as a kid. Didn't realize how much you can actually learn even from cartoons..this hit hard! Love the theme of the some of the character arcs....going to watch it. Hit really hard.

I want to believe that 12:39 (the part where the puddle of water reflects clouds covering the sun) is meant to represent the fact that Terras self-image is cloudy, and unclear now. She wants to forget what she did, so she tries to cover it all up, including the good things (represented by the sun).

The reflections, broken mirror, spilled drinks, reinforces her line. "Things are never how you remember. Memories are not a video recorder as most people think. Memories are tainted. The mind truly doesnt know fact from fiction. Our impressions is most of the memory. Our emotional state, our knowledge, personality all paint on the memory. Even as we grow and change as person can change a memory after it has already been recorded.

For the season it is a satisfying conclusion. For the series no. We should have had one more season to tie things up in a nice bow. So the episode is good but the reason it's hated is because it's not a good ending for the series. Besides it makes since the show would have six seasons anyway. We get a 2 parter ending Beast Boy and Terra's arc, the A plot is about Starfire and then you have your fun/filler episodes.

When the show ended, I was about to finish grade school and start high school in the fall. Superb video. Seeing your video has made me rethink my original idea about the episode. I thought the last episode was about Beast Boy coming to terms with Terra’s death. I found it odd that the other Teen Titans didn’t accompany Beast Boy to prove or disapprove Terra’s existence. Instead the other Titans dismissed or overthought her apparent resurrection (then again, they were fighting a monster so that might explain their response). Also, I chalked up the scenes with Terra as Beast Boy being in a state of denial. Sometimes people who have lost a loved one have a tough time coming to grips with reality and imagine seeing them in a crowd. Perhaps Terra’s death represented the death of show. The creators of the show might have wanted to teach viewers the same message you stated. Things change but life moves on and one should too.

honestly i think the episode had absolutely nothing to do with terra. it just showed that she was happy away from all the super hero stuff. they brought her back to show that beast boy had matured and learned to let things go, no matter how much he didn't want to, which also kind of said that the show teen titans, even though it had lots of support, had to come to an end when it was time, showing that all "Things Change".this episode still makes me bawl my eyes out, and i'm crying writing this, but i thought it was a great way to end the series. i didn't think it was a cliffhanger. ive also heard some deep interpretations of the episode, like, the monster was cartoon network, terra was Warner brothers, beast boy was the audience, and the creators of the show were the titans. this kind of makes sense to me because, the other titans never defeated that monster, meaning that cartoon network probably won and canceled the show. (i'm not good at those deep interpretations but yeah).

Most people say that Things Change should not be an episode to be left without a continuation. It is true that Terra returned the day Trigon was destroyed and that she never had amnesia and lost her powers and memories, but the thing is that I don't believe she made a good choice to end up in a high school and be happier there. It breaks Beast Boy's heart and it shouldn't have to end like this. An episode that is a lesson to move on with better things does not mean that they should break people's hearts and dump them. That is so not cool. There must be a continuation of how the Teen Titans will be able to defeat the white monster they encountered in Jump City when they came back from Paris after defeating the Brotherhood of Evil. The old show must never be left out without stories that need continuations, cliffhangers, unanswered questions and no finale episode. That should not keep them from not making more Teen Titans. There must be a chance for Terra to know that Beast Boy and the Titans forgive her after everything she has done, because she spared all the lives of people from certain death incasing herself into solid stone. The Titans excepted it and they wanted to try to bring her back. People, who love the old show, will never stop clamoring for it to return to our television screens until it finally does. But what kind of way must there be to get the old show to be able to come back with a Season 6?

I love this episode. Always have. By Terra's final words to BB, it's clear she does remember, or at the very least does know BB isn't wrong about her. She simply tells him to move on. 4

I thought that when Terra was alive again that it was that she remembered very little of her past life like she was reincarnated or something. Not her being fully aware of her past, but after re watching the episode it does make sense, and I like the idea of interpreting the episodes with the things change and move on type of deal. Especially because I’ll be turning 18 in a few years.

During them staring at their reflections in the water the water is clear. They had moments skipping rocks where the water becomes distorted. Perhaps the water being clear represents how tara is more sure of herself and who she is now and isnt confused anymore about what kinda person she wanted to be.

Frankly the ending of this episode was quite sad. Although I suppose it still could have been worse. At least Terra came back to life, something I know many fans wanted to see.

I heard a theory the other day that when it came to Slade. Someone said that possibly Terra was the one that made the slade bot. She was his apprentice, she knew about the technology. She possibly could’ve made the bot to send a message to beast boy saying that she didn’t want to be remembered. In the final hopes that he would get the message. But he didn’t. I’m not entirely sure if I agree with this theory, but it is an interesting one

So was like season 5 about beast boy because if it was about him than season 6 would have been about starfire right. Season 6 would have been about starfire and blackfire I guess. When watching this I realized there wasn't a season mainly about starfire other than her encounter with her sister two times but that was like a side story but not the main thing.

i disagree, growing up doesn't mean let go of the one we love, or the things we care about the most in life, just to prove we have grown, life is about fighting till the last effort to change that fate, or destiny, and not accept the terms and conditions before us, if real heroes in past history would of accepted their fate or the fate of the world as it was, then in these days many wouldn't live in freedom, wars against regimes that oppress or keep oppressing on others wouldn't be overthrown if they gave up and said i am a grown man and l have to let go of my stubborn idea, why accept it?! grow up, and fight for what you love! and keep the people you love and care for closer than ever.

I think the only reason the last episode was considered bad wasn’t because of the episode itself but rather because it felt “hanging” There’s definitely more to the story but it’s just… ends. It’s not satisfying enough.

It could have all been in Beast Boy’s head and it could have been also possible that he was dragging along a random girl in a state of delusion. Since teen titans has magic elements where character can come back from the dead its not impossible for Terra to do the same.

Regardless of where you stand on the quality of the episode, it definitely did end on a cliffhanger. The show was greenlit for a final 6th season (And allegedly a movie). Even TTG referenced how the show was unresolved.

I agree with you that Terra was never really meant to be a titan/hero due to her own personal insecurities about her not being able to control her powers. But I still wish her final moments in this episode with Beastboy were different from what they were. In reality as I said in other videos the school girl in my opinion is the real Terra and she really does remember Beastboy and everything that happened but she is pretending not to because she feels guilty about her decision to betray the titans by working for Slade and about all the damage and harm she caused that she just simply wants to move on and live a normal life and not hurt anyone. She probably did some personal soul searching when she was unknowingly revived and probably came to the conclusion that she was never meant to be a Teen Titan because she lacked the self confidence and had too many insecurites about her lack of ability to control her powers and despite her best efforts to do good she unintentionally caused harm and destruction. Terra simply just didnt want to hurt anyone more then she already had, she may have wanted to reconnect with Beastboy but maybe she thought if she did he have the expectation that she rejoin the team and become a Titan again and given everything she had already been through she simply wasnt up for that and may of even thought it be a gateway to Slade trying to suck her back in and control her again. I think she still likes Beastboy and always will as well and the other Titans and that she definetely remembers him and still cares about him, but shes pretending like she doesnt because she feels guilty about all the harm and destruction she caused when she made the choice to betray the Titans that she just wants to move on and live a normal life and not hurt anyone anymore. If I’m honest I don’t think the show ended on a cliffhanger nor a bad note. The ending episode as said what titled “things change” in this case you could have said that about the show ending because the show changed as in it didn’t come back and it realised a shitty sequel. But also the villain that the titans faced wasn’t important in this episode. Every villain they have faced they have beaten meaning that they were inevitable to beat whatever that thing was. Overall things change for the better or worse and in this case it could have been a message about the show ending

This wasn’t the best ending. But it did show that beast boy is just going to have to face facts: terra’s gone and he knows he’s not gonna be a kid forever. He needs to focus on being a hero for his city.

We grew up and grew apart. That’s a sad part of life, but... but... that doesn’t mean it didn’t matter. That doesn’t mean that your friendship wasn’t real, and it doesn’t mean that there’s something wrong with you. Be happy you met that person, and they met you. Few people ever will. Carry your story forward, make new friends and enjoy life as it passes, because it will pass regardless.

I don’t necessarily hate “Things Change” itself. It was a fine episode. The problem is that it was a bad _final_ episode. There was no real sense of closure, and it sets up a new storyline right there, and then it ends, with the fight undetermined. If you don’t see the problem, imagine if Avatar: The Last Airbender ended on Sozin’s Comet Part 1. We never get to see Aang defeat the Fire Lord, and we never get proper closure for the series. That essentially is what happened here. Yes, I know that Teen Titans was going to get a season 6 but was then cancelled, and yes, I know that it’s not necessarily this episode’s fault, but if this episode was going to lead on to season 6, then shouldn’t it have been the next season’s premiere, rather than season 5’s finale?

Blade was abusive sooo I'm not so sure about him not wanting beast boy to hurt her. Could be more of him not wanting beast boy to have her because beast boy is his enemy. Also makes it easier for him to go in and possibly manipulate her in the future since she cut ties with the gang.

I don't know is it weird but I could take away all the action elements from the show and I would still enjoy it as much if not more. I started watching TT like a week ago, my friend was surprised, because "it was a show for kids" and yeah, my first impression was similar but this show has a depth and I would not understand that when I was 9 or 10. I like your video but Slade wouldn’t just leave Terra alone seeing as he’s a bad guy and with that being said he wouldn’t be helping Beastboy move on. He’d use Beastboy’s inability to move on as a way to torture Beastboy.
