I've learned so much from Heiser, so I'm profoundly grateful as well, BUT, honestly, it's not that Heiser is so great, it is that your/our pastors/fathers/ministers, whatever you want to call them, or rather, whatever they want to be called, have been that bad. As this nation falls away, and experiences the consequences of that falling away, the pastors of this nation will bear the guilt. People fall away because they are seeking the truth, and our nation's pastors have been deceived in seminaries, in Bible schools, in whatever institutions are set up to "educate" these men for their CRITICAL task. People know they are not getting the truth in their churches. They are unmoved. The church today does not follow the model of a Biblical church. If it did, it wouldn't call itself a church in the first place. But a church is what they are, a circus. And good, honest people don't have time in their lives for any more circus, so they fall away, learning by implication that they're not good Christians, that they're not interested in Christ, that Christianity is false, empty. But that is deception. If they received the meat of Heiser, and teachers like him, the people wouldn't be falling away, they'd be flocking to these sufficiently educated teachers, just as we see the numbers of people who have flocked to Heiser's teachings here on youtube.

My understanding got heighten! Either people are worshipping the god of the Dead or the God of the Living. Take Buddhism - it's the god of the dead - why would people worship the god of the dead because they are dead and know not the God of the Living. Kind of profound even though I kind of knew this all along.

I subbed. I have a daughter that is a catastrophic result of bad medicine. She became a chronic invalid about 7 years ago and she is only 35.

That illness sounds very similar to what I've been experiencing for roughly the last 8 years, since I had experienced a seizure. Been completely housebound for most of those years. Can only manage to look at the screen if it's small and not flashy or constantly moving. Can't hold conversations because it bothers and fatigues my head and my thinking. I'm in a deep pit, physical health wise.

In the third chapter of the Gospel of John he repeatedly says that salvation is for "Whosoever will" believe on him and follow him. This clearly and unambiguously implies thar the "whosoever" is making a choice on their own. But with your limited "understanding given by God", you already know that. You cannot just pick a single sentence out of a 9 page speech and use it as a magic phrase for anything you want to describe entirely different things. You have to first figure out what it meant IN the speech. I presume you are referring to John 15:16. This is right in the middle of Jesus’ after dinner speech at the Last Supper right before his crucifixion to his twelve closest associates/disciples. In this sentence read in CONTEXT Jesus tells the apostles he has personally chosen them for a mission that is just about to begin. This is a commissioning speech. There were thousands of people who chose to come and follow Jesus and believe in him. Only the 12 were “chosen” to eat the Passover meal with him. Jesus is telling them that they are special. “you have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ORDAINED you.” This is the moment they went from being disciples (learners) to being Apostles (ambassadors). This verse is not talking about choosing rather than being chosen for salvation like the 3rd chapter of John was. It is about ordination. It is right there in the sentence. Everyone may choose to follow Jesus and be saved: John 3:16 “ For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son that WHOSOVER BELIEVES in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” This is about being chosen by God for a specific purpose. Pastors and other spiritual leaders are supposed to be chosen and ordained by God not just decide they think it would be cool to be one. We do this completely wrong so I understand some of your confusion. Grow up and read what is really there.

Yea, that is the way I always read it. Jesus is refering to the revelation given to Peter as the rock. I really do not think Jesus is talking geography. It is all about the unseen realm, the revelation from the Father allowing Peter to see who Jesus is.

Peter's confession meant nothing once Jesus was dead. The foundation of the church is the resurrection. Without it there is no church.

You should be trashed because that is crazy and blasphemous. Jesus did not build his Church on the altar of Pan either literally or figuratively, Jesus built the Church on the Rock (Petra) of Peter's (Petros) or Rpcky's Declaration the Jesus is "the Messiah the son of the living God." This is the gospel. The church was not built on Peter.

Technicality : the Greek text for the word in Matt. 16:18 is πέτρᾳ not Πέτρας

@@TedBruckner True but the far bigger problem here is the blasphemy of saying that Jesus built the Church on the altar of Pan or the Gates of Hades rather than his own identity as God And Messiah. Jesus is the foundation the Church was built on. I Cor 3:11

Building a physical church on top of a pagan worship site was/is a sign of conquest over the pagan temple/religion. There were all kinds of idols at the Bashan site, regular Pagan Central of most gods of the time period. So its very symbolic that Jesus would show up at the physical location to declare He will destroy them, His church will be victorious on the ruins of the fallen angels/little "g" gods. Jesus is not saying He is building a church around or on Peter. If that were the case then why walk 30 miles just to tell Peter that??

It is a big bare outcrop with a cave at its base. 2) Although Jesus was a carpenter, there is no record of him building any physical church buildings anywhere, but I was trying to rule that out in responding to the original posters of this thread. 3) So we are clearly talking about the Church as an organization, not a building. The Christian Church was NEVER headquartered in Caesarea Philippi. 4) Mat 16:15-20, is the passage in Question. Jesus mentions two “Rocks” in v 18: He nicknames Simon as Peter or in Greek Petros (little Rock) and a big Rock, Petra in Greek, upon which he would build his church. Peter is NOT the foundation upon which Christianity was built. Jesus was. Jesus is the BIG ROCK, not Peter (little rock) and certainly not the cave of Pan which is a hole was not a rock much less the Rock. Peter had just given voice to the Gospel, the foundation of Christianity, that Jesus who had just asked who they thought he was is the Messiah of the Old Testament and the Son of the living God. Paul uses the exact same Building/foundation metaphor in I Cor 3:11 where Jesus is the only foundation of the Church upon which it is built. Peter said Jesus was the Rock, the Foundation or corner stone in I Peter 2:7-8. Jesus had already used this metaphor of building in Mat 7:24-27. It is blasphemous to take a metaphor Jesus consistently applied to himself and apply it in the same passage to pagan gods and then say the Church was built on a foundation of pagan gods. 5) Almost nothing Michael Heiser said in this video was true. Pan is an unimportant half goat field god, not the Greek God of the Dead, which was Hades, hence the term Gates of Hades. Pan’s cave would not be the entrance to Hell. Baal was the biggest Canaanite male god to the Female Ashtoreth, like Zeus and Hera. Baal was not the Canaanite god or the dead, Mot was. Jesus was in Caesarea Philippi, but there is nothing anywhere to say he was standing at or near Pan’s cave or that Pan’s cave was the Gates of Hades. There were lots of “Gates of Hades” in the in the world of that time, mostly in Greece. Bashan was not a particularly evil or haunted spot. It was a large area, the grazing land of the half tribe of Manassah (part of Joseph) on the east side of Jordan in what we today call the Kingdom of Jordan. 6) The only thing Heiser was right about was that prevailing over the Gates of Hades/Sheol, the grave, was an obvious reference to the coming resurrection of the dead. Someday, Jesus will force the grave to give up its dead. But save for Jesus himself that has not happened yet. 7) There is no indication that Jesus walked 30 miles to see the Gates of Hell, either. He asked the question when he felt like asking the question. There were shrines to idols all over Palestine. 8) There is absolutely no mention of fallen angels anywhere near this passage or event.
