Around 350 BC, Maiden Castle, already the largest hillfort in the region, was about to undergo a massive expansion. A recently uncovered body on that very site hints at a gruesome ceremony to mark the occasion: a possible human sacrifice.

If it was just a pit there are other explanations. It could be a punishment - one that may or may not have been intended to be fatal. It could have been a trap for a warring tribe.

Lisa... if you understood how few British Iron-Age burials have been discovered, then you might think differently. That historical period lasted for around 900 years (800BC - 100AD), and what they did with the many millions of people who died during that time is fairly much still a complete mystery... thus, the British Iron-Age burials which have been discovered are all an oddity.

@@cuhurun I am an archaeology student, tyvm. I know those burials are still mysterious, but why must modern humans claim every skeleton found was killed by sacrifice?

It's not a Medieval body, it's pre-Roman British Iron-Age, contemporary with the expansion phase of the fort, circa 350BC. Come on, Smithsonian, get with it !

That looks amazing, we know so little about history. I wouldn't mind living in that hillfort back in the day.

More likely a symbolic version of, "in death he's still protecting the ramparts". Likely, if you were to dig up all of those ramparts, you'd find bodies buried in a sitting position, like men waiting at their post for an enemy to attack. I'll wager that being interred there was a matter of honor and pride for a soldier.

i worked on this for 12 months in the mid 80s . with the princes trust .we where repairing the hills from erosion .

@@fordhouse8b ... I'm pretty sure there were only two genders in the time that guy lived and died, just like there are still only two genders to this day. Also, he.s been dead for over two thousand years. He surely won't be offended if someone would assume his gender.

A lot of speculations without actual evidence. Instead of "sacrifice" it could also have been a simple protection measure. Bury the dead body of a strong important warrier, so the spirit of the dead warrier give added protection. Don't forget in those times spirits were considered real.

Three thousand years ago was a hard time, which made hard people. Even if the man in the pit wasn't an enemy prisoner, human sacrifice was a world wide religious belief for most civilizations. Thanks again religion.
