The story of Jack and Rose on board the Titanic is one that everyone knows. But how much of it was actually real? Were the characters and events you see in the film true or were they merely inspired by what happened?
In this audio podcast, we'll dive into an in-depth comparison of what we saw in the movie and compare it with what actually happened.
// About Based on a True Story //
Based on a True Story is a weekly audio podcast that compares history with Hollywood's blockbusters. Think of it like a movie review, except instead of reviewing the acting or how the movie was made, we'll review how accurate the movie was historically by comparing it to the true story.

Officer Murdoch ordered hard to starboard because the ship used tiller commands which were used by the white star line and others at the time. It was not Murdoch making a mistake or him making a quick decision. He ordered port after because when the ship got closer to the iceberg they needed to avoid the stern and propellers or "screws" from hitting the iceberg thus causing damage. Also the ship was ordered into reverse AFTER they hit the iceberg to stop the ship. This was done to check if there was damage (which obviously there was) and shortly after this the ship was ordered to sail again which it did for a bit until they realized they were just pushing more water in faster.

Lifeboats - They weren't intended to provide life support in the high seas, but to ferry passenger from the sinking ship to a rescue ship. Which they thought was near since the Californian was less than 15 miles away. They left half full because passengers refused to board the boats, not because of crew incompetence. The crew needed them launched asap, thinking they would return later on. And historians agree that, had the ship carried more lifeboats, it wouldn't have made a difference. They already struggled to launch all 24 lifeboats in time, having the last two float away as the ship went under. It is improbable they would have had the time to launch more. Also note that Titanic is pretty much the only example of an ocean liner successfully launching all of its lifeboats. Normally, ships capsize when they sink, making it impossible to launch the lifeboats on the high side. Look at the Costa Concordia for a modern-day example. Or the Oceanos.

I agree that the idea was to launch the lifeboats fast. Then come back and pick up survivors. But, I wonder if there had been enough lifeboats for all on board, they would have been able to fill them up quicker. They might have been less agreeable to put up with the passengers nonsense. The Captain might have been more forthcoming with the information to the crew about what was happening. Everything might have been done with a sense of urgency that was not present with the crew during the sinking.

It took them quite some time to get going as well, because the ship was taking on Water so slowly and nobody knew the extend of the damage. However if you look at the Britannic which sank in under an hour, they evacuated everyone of the ship with the only casualties resulting in misscommunication, leeding to lifeboats being launched while the ship was at full speed, with two of them being crushed by the propellers. They however had the advantage of their electric "super-davids" Titanic was not equipped with. It is thanks to the titanic disaster that people on ships are regulary subjected to safty briefings, to speed up evacuation. In case of ttanic, the knowledge that for many hope was lost due to the lack of space in the lifeboats actually led to many Firemen and engineers remaining in the Enginerooms to not only keep the power up till the very last minutes before the ship's breakup, but also allowed them to balalnce out the ship to a relatively even keel with the waterpumps on bord. Other Examples of ships being held afloat by their crews for much longer then they would have otherwise would be the Andrea Doria (which also developed a heavy list) or the USS Lexington.

They carried all the lifeboats they were legally required to. Ships had grown in size and capacity so fast they outpaced regulations. Carlisle, the lead designer who retired and was replaced with Thomas Andrews , argued for more and designed the davits I think, but eventually he was brow beaten into leaving it at just the 16 and four collapsibles. Nice video!

Many people did't get into life boats because they could not believe the ship would sink at first. Also a lot of third class people never made it up to the boat deck until all boats were nearly gone. The crew also may have been nervous about loading the boat fully to capacity while it was up at the boat deck level and swinging in the davits. The plan by at least one or two officers was to open the shell door at a deck and load more people there but there was so many people the boats were afraid they would be swamped. First Officer Murdoch was the one who let men in to the lifeboats if there were no more women and children about to be seen while loading lifeboats. There is no evidence he committed suicide or shot anyone. The family were upset with this depiction. The other side of the boat deck was manned by Second Officer Lightoller and he stuck very rigidly to women and children only in the lifeboats (only letting in men to row). Thomas Andrews was seen on deck, after the staring at the painting moment, throwing deck chairs overboard to help people in the water to have something to hold onto and float. He may have then gone to Captain Smith and/or fainted.

The thing is that they are ordering the lam inside the palm court, Hot meals would be extremely difficult to deliver there, as the smokeroom pantry next door would likely not be equipped to prepare those, as it was not connected to the central galley of the ship by hoists, as some of the other pantries were.

I absolutely love the Titanic, one of my favorite things. Unlike most videos I actually learned a lot. Great attention to detail. So glad I'm going through your back catalog

Daniel, this is outstanding research and presentation! I am a Titanic historian on the LAST SONG played by Wallace Hartley. You've got a couple of things off but most of your info is spot on and just excellent work. Very much enjoyed this. Thank you. Do check out Dr. Jack Bevil's paper on the minute to minute. I think you'll enjoy.

Titanic's Sister Olympic did indeed later upgrade her Lifeboat complement to 68 (64 Boats+ the 4 Collapsibles) However to fit those on board, the central Deck space tht was free on Titanic had an additional 8 Davids installed on each side, because one David could only fit a total of 2 Lifeboats plus in the case of the foremost ones an additional collapsible. Therefor It would have taken some modifications to accomidate these Boats on Titanic. RMS Britannic/Gigantic solved this problem by having 8 giant electrical Davids and having the lifeboats stacked high on the Deck.

What I always find funny about The Szene where Jack is taken away by the master at armsis, that in reality there would have been a padded room in the ships hospital that on Olympic actually was used as the ships brigg. So Jack would probably never have been abled to signal Rose where he was.

I thought it was a trade journal that said the Titanic was practically unsinkable. Not the White Star Line. It's important i think to note that the Marconi operators worked for Marconi. In other words they got paid by the passengers telegrams. That changed as a result of the sinking. As well as all passenger ships were required to have telegraph operators working around the clock. The biggest thing the movie gets wrong in my eyes is that the Titanic ship is a protected site. You can't just go into the ship and take stuff. All artifacts recovered from the Titanic is from the debris field. I sure does sound like some of the background music in this video is from the Raiders of the Lost Ark soundtrack.

that's correct. It was the Shipbuilder and Marine Engineer publication at the time which claimed the Titanic to be unsinkable which was actually "practically unsinkable". It was probably journalists at the time who left out the word "practically." so thusly, the lengend of the unsinkable ship was born.

The legal question has changeg over the years, the main reason that no artefacts from the inside have been recovered is that like in the movie it is only accesable by tiny submarine drones. During the Filming of the movie they actually destroyed part of the grand staircase's Roof by setteling down on it with a Submarine, it always bugged me how they would have gotten a massive Steel Safe out of B Deck.

I think the reason there wasn’t enough lifeboats comes down to the law at the time (which was out of date but still) and the way lifeboats were viewed at that time

The Musicians on bord of titanic where divided into 2 Bands, with 3 Men living in 3rd. Class and 5 in 2nd class, playing for the higher class respectively. However, they were not whitestar employees and like the raidio operators did not have to stay onboard to the last.
