After a viewer suggested for me to make a response video to a KZfaqr called JustTheFacts on Kaiser Wilhelm II, and being freshly back from vacation, I decided to make a response video on my own in order to make up the 2 weeks without content. Wilhelm is far from being the worst Kaiser ever as JustTheFacts portrays him to be, and you will bear witness to why.

Russia has far more potential as an ally. I mean ffs Russia collapsed into civil war, suffered mass famines (mostly man made) and then fought a war of anihilation in wich over 10% of their population died and still managed to stay as a superpower. Actualy, not really. The government cited that whole thing, but keep in mind, the war ended in 1871. It has been 43 years, before the outbreak of ww1. By that point, do you reckon that the majority of french people, specialy the young ones, would even honestly care, given choice? And there was even a research, and it just confirms that majority of french people that even cared about the 1871 were old timers, and politicians, aka, people that either felt hurt over the results of the last war, or people who saw an oportunity in destroying the reich. young french people didnt even care for the Germans, and aside few Strassbourgian hiccups, they pretty much werent even bothered by the fact they lost a war to the germans

Its a shame how in many ways you could say the Entente succeeded in demonizing the Kaiser. All he wanted was a great nation and to be well beloved by his people and especially his family. What he went through during childhood was very brutal and sad. No one talks about this when someone is talking about the Kaiser. I'm a very big fan of him. He went to military school and he was trained to be the Kaiser. Yes he had some grudges towards people but he never wanted to start a war over or be hostile. I think he made alot of good decision like making Germany an industrial power buffing up their military and navy and making friends of Austria Hungary and soon the Ottomans and the Bulgarians which they all had a common enemy. I don't believe Wilhelm II was a terrible Kaiser but I do believe that the probabaganda from the brits, Russians and possibly France made him to be Satan himself.

It is good to see someone making a way more solid response video to something which seems more like a meme video anyways. Two additions i would have liked to see: 1. Sources. You take the time and use arguments and quotes, if you could give some sources in your description, that would top it of neatly. 2. I do have to debate the purpose of the fleet-expansion. For one, we always have to take official declarations with a hint of salt, so Wilhelm IIs statement about the fleet-purpose should be looked at further. Also there is the whole plan of the Risikoflotte (risk-fleet) by Admiral von Tirpitz, to sort of counterbalance Britains fleet in a time of crisis. Also you said, that the fleet was not meant to be against Britain at all, but follow it up that the trade protection makes it necessary, and to protect the trade against whose blockade? France and Britain. Otherwise it is good to see someone speak out with more in-depth facts and history.

Germany was the rising power and England did everything to prevent that. France wanted its lost territories back and so both had the goal of isolating Germany. This was seen in the Morocco crisis. Germany had no reason to go to war as it became the strongest nation economically and its fleet was getting stronger. When Russia lost to Japan, the Germans could have taken advantage. But Wilhelm wanted an alliance with Russia, which is the greatest fear of the Anglo-Saxons to this day. The tsar wanted to prevent Russia from mobilizing, but his order was not carried out. after receiving a telegraph from Wilhelm shortly before the war. Germany had to react quickly to the Russian mobilization because it would find itself in a war on two fronts. Everyone knew that a war would mean the end of the monarchies and that the revolutionary forces in Russia were particularly strong. That's why the tsar had no interest in war. There are quotes where English politicians clearly describe the goal of destroying Germany before it becomes too strong. The historian Niall Ferguson writes that Germany was not prepared because it did not arm itself enough in peacetime compared to the others.

@@KubusSc7 you’re just looking at this through a contemporary lense. Germany is fundamentally part of western civilization, they have been involved in the west for thousands of years via war, conquest, trade, and spread of ideas, they follow western branches of Christianity, they use the Latin alphabet, celebrate western holidays and use western formal dress and etiquette, and their buildings are in western architecture styles for hundreds of years such as gothic, neoclassical, renaissance, baroque, Romanesque etc. Germany ESPECIALLY has an inter-connected history to France, due to both nations originating from the Frankish/Merovingian Empire but going their separate paths once the empire was split up due to Gavelkind. However, I think he has a point with the naval arms race. You are correct that it was the British who made it a race, which justifies Wilhelm morally, but not tactically. Long term, yes, Germany was going to need to expand its navy, but short term, an alliance with Britain was way more valuable than South American trade. The point on the alliance of the three emperors is mixed. Maybe Wilhelm would have had to discard the alliance eventually, but it seems like there was no reason for him to do it right then and there. If circumstances forced his hand, then that would be that, but as far as I can tell there is no reason he couldn't have kept it going as long as possible the way Bismark did, despite the obvious problems.

I would add that the alliance of the Three Emperors also existed to ensure that no independent Polish State could reform, as such a state existing would threaten the borders off all three nations. Well the German empire wasn’t a democracy it was like a mix between autocracy and democracy like many monarchies at the time as the people could vote and the reichstag did decide on laws and the money policy but they couldn’t suggest laws and the entirety of the executive powers lay directly or indirectly in the kaisers hands. Though the Bundesrat could suggest laws which was made from representatives of the executive from the various German states which were mostly similar to the empire as a whole though there were exceptions.

@@MoloIongo Not exactly accurate. He got spicy WWII and other roleplay private messages leaked and got face doxxed and name doxxed. The female's age that was involved has not been confirmed, only the content of these sessions. Remember that people often pretend to be ages that they are not. The claim is that she was of an age that is unlawful in most U.S states but none of the claims say she was young enough to accurately categorize him as you have. (Watering down these terms is deeply dangerous and hurts real victims) Further, there is no confirmation since there has been no trial since the leakers didn't just go to the cops. One may use the content of the roleplay sessions as evidence of him being in this category but this is fictional which of course doesn't count. I'll be honest and say I'm deeply skeptical of the claims of the leakers despite the content of the leaks since they didn't just go to the cops like any normal person would do if they believed he was doing something unlawful. There has also been no media coverage or law enforcement involvement at all. Meaning either they still didn't report this or they did and no law was actually violated like if she had lied of her age or if roleplay isn't legally actionable.

There was an upsurge in anti-British feeling in Germany during the Boer War in 1899-1902 and again during the Agadir Crisis in 1911. For the most part, the kaiser's anti-British policies were about catering to public opinion. Britain entered World War I when Germany invaded Belgium and France because Britain had longstanding treaty commitments with both countries. The pre-war rivalries about colonies and navies get a lot of attention, but they are not what led to war. The Anglo-German colonial rivalry was resolved by a treaty concluded in early 1914. As for the German High Seas Fleet, it never left the North Sea. Its purpose was strictly to face off with the main British fleet based at Scapa Flow. It wasn't built to promote international trade or empire.

Saying the German empire was democratic is a stretch, because the Reichstag (the parlament) had little to no power and the one significant one (the granting of the war budget) could be pressured into allowing through declaring a war and then asking for the budget, most of the power lied in the Reichsrat (the upper chamber) an un-elected house of representetives which was dominated by the Prussians and because the chancellor was also the prime minister of Prussia he had all the say in decision making, and because the chancellor was only appointed by the Kaiser and could be removed at any time, with no reason, so the chancellor did everything the Kaiser said or else he would be fired. So in the end all the decision making was done by the Kaiser, or the chancellor if the Kaiser didn't want to rule (like with Bismarck). It was designed this way by Bismarck to make it look like a liberal democracy similar to Britain, while actually being closer to Russia, you could compare it to the cheap and weak constitution the Tsar made after the huge protest in 1905.

As a historian, I have my own reasons for disliking Wilhelm II. While I do think JTF was onto something with this, I don't agree with the clearly ideological nature of his position. Wilhelm was definitely a flawed individual from a young age who let his own flaws bleed into his governance of Germany. Contrasted with figures that governed Germany and Europe at-large in the previous generation, Wilhelm's powers of pragmatism were weak at best. He - undeniably - acted in a manner that ultimately forced together Russia, the UK and France - three countries that initially had little reason to ally with each other. And in the end, this blunder among others costed Germany dearly. With that said - I don't believe that Wilhelm was THE problem. Especially when it comes to the start of WWI. It's clear he was influenced by men around him - both in regards to the war, and into giving up most of his power (IE Ludendorff and Hindenburg). In the end, Wilhelm received a worse reputation than he's due because of actions during this war that were largely out of Wilhelm's control.

Its also good to mention Germany wasnt entirely constitutional monarchy, at least in a sense of what we understand nowadays. Germany, as well as Austria Hungary, were semi constitutional monarchies, were the Monarch holds some power, but otherwise, the governing is left in hands of parliament. This does not mean Kaiser is the top dog, nor that the parliament is in charge, as the german kaiser was pressured often into some decisions due to the public.

I've been saying for the past 35 years that WWI was started and precipitated by England, and not Germany! England lusted after Germany's few and far between colonies for themselves; they were afraid of Germany's burgeoning industrial might and were paranoid enough to believe that one day it would be aimed against them, despite the fact that Germany had no such ambitions, much less any interest in doing so. When I make this statement, I wish to emphasize that I'm not referring to the English people as such, but the greedy and despicable ambitions of the Royal Families of England and France at large during that period in history, all living their lives as though the whole world belonged to them by right and to no other, not to mention that they always believed that the US could be relied upon to in a word, bail them out, pay their bills, finance their selfish and unjust wars, and with our taxpayers' money, to say nothing of our blood! And the worst part of that is that we have always obliged them, and to whatever extent that they arrogantly and presumptuously demanded!

While i agree it did become a small naval arms build up, the original intention was not to be british rival, heck, untill the third build up, they didnt even care and didnt even bother looking at the british, because to them, it was just a self serving mission.

I would be interested in hearing your thoughts on how Germany's cooperation with the Ottoman Empire under Kaiser Wilhelm II. could be justified in the context of the Armenians and Greeks, specifically the Pontic Greeks, considering the systematic oppression and even genocide that took place.
@simulacrumpilot2777
@simulacrumpilot2777 Ай бұрын
Armenian genocide started around 1915. Aka during WW1. At that point Ottomans and Germans were already allies. As for Greeks the actions of the Greece was the main reason that radicalized the Ottoman empire in the first place. Greece's(and also rest of the Balkan League's) genocidal policies during the Balkan Wars resulted in over 2 million Muslim refugees to escape to the Ottomans due to ethnic cleansings. Prior to the 1912 Balkan Wars, Ottomans were ruled by the liberal Kamil Pasha government who supported a more decentralized empire with local autonomy and minority language rights. First Balkan War ended all of that and resulted in the collapse of the Kamil Pasha government it was only after that Enver Pasha launched his military coup and took over empire, creating the WW1 era Ottoman government we all know.
@panperl1212
@panperl1212 Ай бұрын
@@simulacrumpilot2777 Tell me more about the Balkan League's "genocidal policies", if you like. Admittedly, I am not read up too much on their policies, but it is important to know that the Pontic Greeks were not citizens of the newly established Greek state (after 400 years of slavery, and I will not just grand you anything else on this). Now, if you are, for example, referring to the Siege of Tripolitsa, there are important background informations on this. For example, preceding the siege, which took place at the height of the Greek War of Independence, there were massacres happening at Smyrna, Constantinople and Cyprus, where tens of thousands of Christians were slaughtered, including many clergy and with people not even participating in the revolts. The Patriarch of the Greek Orthodox Church, Gregory V., even condemned the revolution and preached obedience, yet he was publicly hanged, on Easter Sunday, the most important day for the Christians. At Smyrna a Mullah was even executed for refusing to bless the murder of the Christians. Also, 20 days preceding the siege, there is the destruction and massacre of Samothrace. Now, imagine what is going on behind the walls of Tripolitsa, at the ongoing battles, hearing of all those atrocities during the height of the War of Independence after 400 years of slavery, while awaiting furiously for the walls of Tripolitsa to fall. Keep also in mind that it was not an officially trained military fighting for the Greeks. This is not meant to justify the massacre that ensued after the fights, just a bit of context. Kolokotronis, an important leader figure, tried to prevent the killings, asking in advance for Tripolitsa to be surrendered and them leave, and even trying to stop the killings from happening after the siege. However, it was even difficult for him to keep himself together and not be swayed emotionally after what the Turks were continuously doing. One of the first things he did entering the city was ordering a tree at the marketplace to be cut down, on which Greeks were always hanged. And how would these justify the Genocide of the Pontic Greeks? Especially after there had already been a massive retaliation of the Ottomans with the massacre of Chios, where abound three times as many Greeks were slaughtered? By the way, I will be very sceptical on points mentioned because of the ongoing Turkish Propaganda (where the state still views people like Topal Osman, who perpatrated the two mentioned genocides, as war heroes, while denying the genocide even happened). Just wanted to mention that.

@@panperl1212 Tripolitsa was almost a hundred years before Balkan Wars and mostly irrelevant to the current discussion so I don't understand why you write that entire rant there. Anyway, for the Balkan Wars themselves I'll mostly copy paste mostly, here "The heavy and rapid defeat of the Ottoman army prevented the safe evacuation of the Muslim civilians, making them a clear target for the Balkan League forces invading the region. As a result, it is estimated that, in total, up to 632,000-1.5 million Ottoman Muslims perished outside of Albania and c. 400,000-813,000 became refugees by the end of the Second Balkan War." These policies weren't limited to just Ottoman Muslims btw since Albanians also(mostly at the hands of Serbians) also faced a similar fate. "There were various instances where Albanian communities were targeted especially by Serbian and Montenegrin forces. According to contemporary accounts, c. 20,000-25,000 Albanians in the Kosovo Vilayet were killed in the first two to four months of the conflict. The number of Albanian deaths exceeded 120,000 by the end of the Second Balkan War. Hundreds of thousands of Albanians were deported throughout the Balkan Wars." end quote. Also another tidbit. Did you know that Balkan Muslims were hugely overrepresanted in the WW1 era CUP government? Nearly 90% of the party consisted of Turks and other Muslims from Balkans while Anatolians despite having a larger population in the party overall was only 10% of the CUP. This extends to the infamous 3 pashas themselves. Djemal was originally from the Greek island of Mytilene, Enver was himself a half Albanian and the most powerful of the 3 Talaat was from Kardzhali Bulgaria.

@@panperl1212 Anyway, for Pontics firstly I don't understand why are you even bringing up Chios in relation to them considering that's an island in Aegean thousand of kilometers away from Pontus and wasn't even inhabited by the Pontic Greeks. Secondly, although it definitely doesn't justify the Ottoman actions at the time most Pontic Greeks, their academia and media supported the Megali Idea and the continuation of what was started during the Balkan Wars. People like Nikos Kapetinidis(one of the most influential Pontic Greeks at the time) argued for these in his newspaper Epochi which at the time was one of if not the biggest Pontic Greek newspaper. These like I said before might not justify the Ottoman actions but it does put some things into perspective especially considering how paranoid they've become after their catastrophic failure in the Balkan Wars.
@panperl1212
@panperl1212 Ай бұрын
@@simulacrumpilot2777 Well, I understand the Ottomans getting paranoid at any Greek citizen supporting the Megali Idea, but rightly so, considering the history of the Ottomans. Was it unethical for Pontic Greeks to support this idea? This is exactly why I was mentioning the Greek War of Independence. It was obvious that the Pontic Greeks would also hope for their land to become independent in the future, especially to the Ottomans, who came not as colonisers, but as conquerors, enslaving the Christians for centuries on their own land. As I said, I understand there being this heat of the moment, the Muslim losses at the Balkan Wars and the fear of losing even more, but all this loss did not come to some innocent bystander. We should also consider the extent of the planning behind the genocide. It wasn't just one moment that made it into a genocide. It wasn't just a mistake. It was calculated, Turks profited off of it and, as mentioned before, main perpetrators were (and are still) celebrated.

There was also growing antipathy and jealousy to England. This resulted in a confused childhood exacerbated by his ungrowing arm and looking weak because of a disability. His decisions were based on a need to placate the wishes and demands of the rising German state. At the same time, he had an underlying desire to simply be a British gentleman. This all resulted in a very confused individual. You could spend all day and into tomorrow "Phil"osophizing Kaiser Bill and ultimately; who gives a dam about him? All I care about are the millions he could've saved and didn't because of his poor little problems. This goes for all the European "elite": Haig, Petain, Foche, the Romanovs. The most important thing obtained from WWI was the end of these people, their ideas of government, their deaths and our lives . . or what was left.

I'd say yes, out of the three german kaisers he was the worst, reasons are, number one he lead his country to destruction, two he was a idiot in external affairs aka the naval arms race, the interview with the british Times, the time when he didn't stop austria hungary from declaring war despite him saying that "all justifications for war against Serbia has been dealt with" after Serbia accepted 9 out of the 10 decrees of the ultimation to Serbia and when he failed to stop the Hindenburg and Ludendorff dictatorship. Though he did make very good decisions in his internal policies. So I can't really say that he was better than a kaiser who united germany with the help of the greatest diplomat ever in otto von bismarck or a kaiser who only ruled for 100 days and did nothing.
@gamingledgens2112
@gamingledgens2112 2 жыл бұрын
Another thing the german empire and austria hungary were not a constitutional monarchy, it was more of a mix of pure autocracy like the Russian empire and the constitutional monarchy of Britain which was effectively a democracy but with a figure head leader, so since kaiser wilhelm the 2nd had many a political and military power the german empire wasn't a constitutional monarchy. Also while what you said about the naval arms race was mostly correct a certain admiral Alfred von tirpitz did twist it to his own benefit by actively wanting to make a fleet strong enough to get concessions out of Britain or to atleast be around the same level as britain in terms of naval power and since in ww1 Germany was the only country on earth with the capability of challenging the royal navy I'd say that tirpitz succeeded. And kaiser wilhelm the 2nd had the power to fire tirpitz he could have stopped him. Also britain had the well known 2 power standard which made clear that they would have a fleet which is larger than the 2nd and 3rd largest fleets in the world and when germany became 2nd place that caused a increase in the size of the Royal navy. Though Britain did escalate it with the launch of hms dreadnought.

1, youre mixing up the Kaisers. 2. Naval arms race was only considered for a long time an arms race by the british, and solely the british, the germans downright went "what about the british, who cares, we arent their enemy, and neither are they ours", and it only escalated into such, cause the british tried to make sure they are the top dogs at all times. 3. Tirpitz stuff is accurate, only in that he presented his ideas to the kaiser, and was more convincing than others, and Kaiser, trying to do as he thought would be best, chose an option that made sense to him, based on the facts presented. 4. Semi constitutional monarchy. Not saying youre wrong about saying it wasnt constitutional, but saying it was absolutist monarchy isnt entirely true, considering most events were even pressured onto the kaiser. 5. He wasnt an idiot, but a zigg zagger. Idiot would force everyone against him, he just switched external policies too quickly. 6. He was not even in Germany when the affair with serbia was happening, he was on a vacation, and was just notified the government went all in and said "yes" to austrians wanting war. And keep in mind, Austria pushed into the balkans for power. All it did, was assure them the germans will come to help them in case things go south, which didnt have to, had Russia not mobilised in defense of Serbia, which was a guarantee made, to assure Russia can influence balkans into its own sphere of influence. 7. Otto von Bismarck was a man that barely managed to keep the alliance of 3 emperors together, or rather, didnt, and should i mention his internal policies, that were basicaly making germans fight one another? You know, the Kulturkampf? the one about ending catholcis and south germans, turning them more northern and protestant? Also ideas like evicting "socialists" from even having the basic civil right to live? Something that made even the parliament go "What the hell, Bismarck?" 8. At that point in the war, he had no choice. Hindenburg and Ludendorff were generals who controlled the frontlines, with Hindenburg being the face of German Army, and Ludendorff the brains behind Hindenburg. And by that point, war already went too far, for anyone to even try. If you want my take on what he did wrong, and should be noted of, was the Elsass Lothringen affair, zigg zagging policy, shouldve stayed in one side, that interview in British times, african colonies like Togo and Namibia.

Thinking in German Empire had 3 kaisers, with the first kaiser uniting several kingdoms, principalities and dukedoms after a glorious victory in a war with a major european country, the second kaiser only reigning for 90 days, though with progressive polices and ideas and a hero of the wars of unification, and there is the third kaiser envolved with various scandals, even though he was sometimes not directly envolved, always trying to show german strength by whatever means although ofending other nations, with almost of Europe hating Germany because of that and leading the German Empire for their end in defeat, I think he isn't the best. But in other ways if you see Wilhelm I made almost any effort to build the German Empire while Bismarck did it. And Wilhelm II acted in that way probably because the mistreat of his mother, who was a good princess but a horrible mother to him.
