Crabbing off piers in the Pacific Northwest is a hoot. Dungeness crab is pricey these days, so a nice haul offsets the cost of the trip a bit. Washington, Oregon, and California, all seem to have similar regulations and similar crab: male Dungeness of a certain size, under a limit, and red rock crab of any size, male or female, up to a very high limit. The red rock crabs taste great, but you have to catch the big ones to get enough meat from them.

I wish the crabbing was better down here in San Diego. We mostly get yellow rock crabs, the odd dungeoness crab (which is rare here), spider crabs, and maybe some small Mexican swimmer crabs (about the size of a blue crab). Technically, there are also box crabs and California King crab but those are so deep you needed specialized gear so only commercial fisherman go after them.
