Waste Away (2020) - Stop Motion Animated Short

In a trash-filled city, a homeless woman's encounter with a fish takes an unexpected turn.
My BFA thesis film, created over a period of 10 months.
Waste Away is a surreal stop motion short about a homeless woman who becomes pregnant with a fish. The responsibility of motherhood gives her the strength to fight for survival, while the forces of nature threaten to overtake her. The setting of urban neglect emphasizes the pervasive alienation between people, and humanity’s destructive impact on their environment. Relevant to today’s crisis, at a time when nature is undermining our position as its ruler, this animation tells a vivid story of disaster and rebirth. Waste Away is Elly Stern's BFA thesis film at Massachusetts College of Art & Design.

Water(ocean or even piss)means womb, when the fish was being swallowed means the same thing the woman being swallowed by ocean, back to the safe place. The womb somehow is a safe place where no harm will ever done to you.

I found this on accident. Happy accident :) I like the sounds used, good sound design with the stop motion! I bet it was really hard to match up the sounds with the animation with that style.

I think it the girl is dead by the time she start to consume the fish (that's why she looks like swallowed it) because it almost never happened and might be only a bites, the rest is only her journey of her soul leaving the earth and because the last thing she encounters was the fish so she got delivered by the fish to the afterlife

I think it is all about karma. If she did not eat fish then she would not have died. Every action you take has its own consequences.

@@anniesolomon4876 I believe karma which is buddhism philosophy. She has done bad things in her previous life so she has become poor in her current life resulting in eating fish or again doing bad things for others. Unless she attempts to change herself inhibiting her bad actions or thoughts and nourishing her good souls and actions, she will again be punished or reap the sows she planted in her next life. I believe people who have done the best in their prior lives live more happily, successfully and wealthy in their current lives.
