Hi Jemma. Lucerne is a high protein crop. I think it is named after being first introduced to Europe at Lucerne in Switzerland. In some countries it's called Alfalfa. It is Legume like clover, peas and beans, meaning it has nodules on its roots that fix nitrogen, so it doesn't need extra artificial nitrogen fertiliser. I know Hanford Feeds, Dorchester (now MVF) used to grow and dry it there until the mid 90s when it became cheaper to buy imported.

You asked about the name Lucerne and over here it is the name of a company that produces dairy products such as milk, cheese and yogurt. The UK is certainly bonkers britain. A 2 hour wait for a load of clay. It was so much simpler 20 year ago when people were involved rather than computers.

You probably haven't got room on the truck but you can buy a good used compact folding bike for under £50 to save long walks, especially if it's raining. I guess the mirror lights are LED otherwise the ceiling could get very hot.
