In Germany, wastewater monitoring is used in addition to existing disease monitoring systems. The aim is, among other things, to assess the spread of infectious diseases in order to be able to take measures to protect the population. Wastewater monitoring can help detect outbreaks, assess their extent and uncover their origin. But how does wastewater-based surveillance work?
Infectious agents enter the wastewater via stool, among other things, and can be detected there. The systematic monitoring of wastewater for infectious agents with the aim of making decisions for population-related measures is known as wastewater-based surveillance (also known as wastewater surveillance for short). The measurements are compared with other disease monitoring data and analyzed together. They allow conclusions to be drawn about the trend of infection dynamics.
