I think the suggested $50 limit is to allow them a normal life where a friend might take them out for a meal. Obviously that would still be up for corruption but far less likely, especially if it is worded so that is the maximum allowed annually from any one person or company.

Wow, both Congressman Raskin and Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez are really impressive. They are both very articulate and clearly care about American democracy over-and-above partisan politics. Not that they aren't above scoring political points when the opportunity arises. But they do it with integrity and respect for their institution which can't be said of the Clown Posse that is the modern Republican party.

There's also no binding ethical code for federal District judges. In the Southern District of Florida, Judge Cannon is ruling in the criminal case of the person who recently raised her from obscurity to her lifetime position of power and prestige. This is a gross conflict of interest on its face.

This case opens up a larger question. Should people who want to purchase a gun be subjected to a drug test? The question on the form releases the gun seller from liability, but the public is subjected to the whims of a person who is on illegal substances with a dangerous weapon. And now it's clear that many applicants are lying on the those applications, so the question by itself is not enough.

The Judiciary Act of 1869 set the number of Supreme Court Justices at 9. The population of the USA in 1870 was just under 39,000,000 . The population of the USA in 2024 is just over 336,000,000. The power of the Justices during this period has thus increased ten fold just how many people they get to dictate decisions too. There are way to few people with way too much power. The whole construction of the Supreme Court needs to be reconsidered. Ethical restrictions and term limits will make little difference in modifying the insular nature of this insult to an alleged democracy.

Eventually the two main parties should compromise on a way to make the S court equally represented by both parties, and include one independent.

During my years as a lowly civil servant for both Indian Health Service and the VA, I was held to a stringent code of ethics and conduct including the Hatch Act and innumerable regulations. It seems to me that someone who’s a part of the most prestigious court in the country should be held to a HIGHER standard. Back then the gift limit was $15 and company reps could bring us donuts once in a while.

Yep. The highest court should have the highest standards regarding ethics and impartiality, as well as experience and qualifications. And even the appearance of bias should require recusal. I make legal decisions all day in my job, (unemployment insurance) and if i think i might possibly know the person in the claim, i have to send it to someone else.

The easiest solution to the Supreme Court issue is to make them subject to the federal ethics board. Once the Dems take the House, and KEEP the Senate, get it passed! There were over 70 ethics violations on Kavanaugh alone.
