Last year, a video of Ameca the robot's facial expressions had the world fascinated (and terrified). But the creators of this humanoid say Ameca is the face of the future.

The idea that they cannot 'feel' doesn't make sense because human feeling is merely a physicioelectric response, analog neural networks. Just because those networks are in digital form, doesn't make them any less real in a machine. they need to be careful not to tie the emotional emulation systems feedback into the action and learning systems.

What I find scariest is not a robot with emotions, but a robot that can mimic emotions while not having any. Edit: I did not expect my comment to get so much traction, it has been really interesting hearing everyone's different opinions on the subject, thank you so much everyone for sharing them.

From all the most developed and most well known humanoid robots out there at the moment I have to say I love Ameca's face the most. Not just because of her realistic expressions, but purely her features as well. Most of the other robots try to imitate pretty girls leading to rather lifeless looking faces. Ameca, on the other hand, has a witty expression. It makes so much sense that she was created by Brits. Well done! I like this robot very much. Also its creator (the guy in this video) is very cute.

The facial and body movement is amazing, and I love the hand movements. I think this would be great for some customer service-type applications, to save the mental health of people in some jobs, where the AI being limited isn't too much of a disadvantage. Save humans for the super human specific things where you have to really think about how to respond to and handle a situation, or for when the AI of a robot isn't enough. Having the realistic face and expressions thing would still be helpful for humans with some things, because interaction with others of our species is so core to our neurological development.

@@gato0082 it's not replacement. It's saving people's mental health and applying their skills where a human is specifically needed. It's like saying someone is too skilled to work in fast food when they have the education and skill to be a chef in a proper restaurant. The robots with human faces would take the place of a bank teller or receptionist, and a customer could ask for a human counterpart's help if they desire it. A receptionist would be really busy with other work besides just sitting at the front desk of some office, and so it would free up their time to focus on that work without having to rush and they wouldn't have so many things competing for their attention all the time. It would increase productivity and the value of work done by humans, not decrease it. It's the avoidance of treating people like slaves and doormats, and treating them like actual people with feelings and health concerns, and with skills. We could achieve so much more as a civilization if we were better able to focus on the stuff humans are really freaking good at, instead of things that are really simple and mindless, or activities that negatively affect our health. But you can feel free to go apply to McDonald's for the position of "human bullseye #3" and have change thrown in your face and be spat on by a boomer during a pandemic if you want, like what happened to my friend working at Wendy's last year, if that's really your passion.

@@gato0082 if you think my mentality is so dangerous... Then explain it to me. Maybe you can change it. Let's talk it out if you're so concerned. Right now you're being.. kinda vague, or at least, I don't know for sure what your thoughts are behind your words. And let me make this clear: the vision I shared for this technology is an ideal situation. Ideal does not mean most likely. I am aware of that. We can only do so much baby proofing to prevent evil people from taking advantage of things. And, at this point, if this technology is misused, we are past protecting the knowledge of it. The best we can do is look at what good can be done with it, and try to beat those with bad intentions to it. We can try our very hardest to do good, and spread good, or we can refuse to learn about something that could be used for evil. But turning away from it doesn't help anybody. It doesn't stop anyone. I am very concerned about what evil could come from AI, and the replacement of humans with technology. But technology and AI isn't going anywhere. So, we might as well set a standard for how it is used, a good standard, and recognize its capabilities, and draw a distinction between that and humans. The better we understand how we are different, the more we will appreciate humans, and the better we can do for each other. Turning a blind eye is the same as permission at this point.

With jobs not paying livable wages and companies wanting more cheaper labor, this is inevitable. The only way to prevent total collapse of civilizations and humanity would be to dismantle the outdated, highly flawed monetary-market system. Our Science and technology are passed the limitations of our current economic system. We need for the economic system to evolve along with everything else. A good replacement would be to have a Resource-Based economy. It isn't perfect, but it is far more superior than the current monetary-market system by millions of miles.

We all have seen a video of a cat that hisses at the "cat" in the mirror. The cat is not hissing for our entertainment, it *really* thinks there is another cat there. We laugh and think its funny because of how obvious it is to us that there is not really another cat there. And yet: When the pieces of metal, magnets and bits of human like materials are arranged so that they look as human like as our efforts allow, we lose our objectivity all of the sudden. For some inexplicable reason, we let ourselves think those pieces of metal, magnets and bits of human like materials are another person. They are not. They are just the efforts of a sophisticated product. No matter how advanced the product gets, it is just a thing, not a person. Until you recognize this, you are just a more complicated version of the cat hissing at the other "cat" in the mirror.

Ameca is an amazing robot, but people shouldn't misunderstand its abilities. As he said, it is designed for entertainment. It is not intelligent at all in the way you and I think about intelligence, although AI has been used to make some of its movements more lifelike (e.g., visually tracking a moving object). The voice is coming from a human operator. It probably has little to no dexterity, it can't walk, and I bet it can't lift much of anything. It's designed to wow an audience by its very human expressive gestures and facial expressions - and it does that exceedingly well.

Had it just looked nonchalant whilst the other guy was talking, It would have easily crossed many aspects of the uncanny valley. I suppose this is because, as humans, we can readily tell the difference between a genuine smile and someone who's just forcing one for camera. The robot seems to have been burdened with a forced smile throughout the interview, which just looks a bit wrong.

It is extraordinary how far this technology has progressed in a relatively short period of time. The Internet (outside of the Military and Academic realm) emerged in 1994 and here less than 30 years later, Humanoidotics is emerging as the next frontier in communication. It is impossible to imagine how far this can be developed within the next 30 years. Whilst it may not be feasible or financially viable to purchase and own one of these to be in your own home any time soon that day will come. In the interim, it would be more feasible to adapt and evolve the inner technology separately from the mechanical side and render that either as a 3D animated object on your computer screen, or TV screen, or from a holographic device on the floor within the comfort of a room in your home. So you are engaging and communicating with the AI and animated 3D software only instead of a physical metal-plastic humanoid initially.
