2nd gen cummins you'll be rebuilding the auto, if auto. Needing an hd clutch and syncros if stick. You'll need a lift pump and replace the vp44 at least once. You'll have to fix a few gnarly oil leaks, likely a rear main seal and timing cover seal. Your dash will crack, your driver seat will rip. You'll need to upgrade steering components. And most annoying of all, the seller will ask an arm, a leg, your left nut, and your first born child for it. Regardless of mileage or condition. But, theyre a good looking truck and its a cummins!

In my experience/opinion, these trucks are great running trucks, if cared for, and left mostly stock. The "53" block is a problem, mainly if you don't treat the engine the way it was designed. Sure, the VP44 isn't great, but it did the job, as a stock pump. Your truck could be the poster-truck for what happens when you take the time to actually care for your vehicle, and that is something to be proud of. Like most other diesel trucks of this year, they run great, if cared for. I agree with just about everything you have said in this video, and as always great video!

I bought a 2nd gen a few months ago from an older lady who absolutely babied it. She always had regular maintenance performed and took very good care of it for the 14 years she owned it. The original transmission is still tight, the engine doesn't leak a drop of oil and the interior is in perfect shape.

biggest walk away point when looking for a truck is, does it have a lift on it. This calls in the same category as Teenager truck. most people the own diesels tend to take care of it themselves. So expecting someone to have a big stack of paperwork for oil changes is ridiculous.

I don't have a 2nd Gen. Mine is a 2004.5 with almost 200 thousand, the Trans are not the problem, the problem is over power them. They are not made to take 2x the HP they came with. As good as the Chevy trans are they also will blow out in no time when they are over powered. I owed a 1st Gen and pulled a trailer with it and never had any problems with it. Having said that I think it put out a massive 160 HP but got the job done well.

I love my 2g. Transmission isn’t bad at all after a few relatively cheap upgrades. If you buy a 2g get that trans pan off and pitch the filter. Bust out the checkbook and spend 450 bucks and that trans will go a long time. I agree with all you said. There are many bigger, shined up and new trucks all around me but mine is super reliable and a real go getter.

I can only tell you do yourself a favor and have a certified CUMMINS mechanic give the engine a once over prior to buying..if the seller is telling you the engine is good and it checks out YOU pick up the tab for the mechanic..if its not; the seller picks up the tab, that makes the seller put his money where his mouth is.. when your buying any diesel its for the engine most of all..right? If you want to tighten up your steering, after making sure all the nuts on tie rod and drag link are tight, reach down on top of the steering pump, loosen the nut, and screw the worm gear in 1/8 of turn or so at a time, don't over do it though, it'll get tight quick and you'll have to manually straighten out the steering wheel after turning a corner, or you'll just drive a circle

VP44s Love 'em or hate 'em!! Rebuilts $600 -$900 Bone yard $500. The good thing is that it can be replaced in less than an hour. Purge fuel system by removing fuel relay and jumper pins 87 & 30 turn key on. I used my fuel injection tester @ return test port to purge lift pump lines of air with the pressure release button. then crack all inj lines @ injectors replace relay. turn over until it sputters then close injector and start will run rough. Crack lines one at a time until it smooths out. The other plus is they tune electronicly . P=pumps need parts to tune. My 24V has an Edge CS tuner and the performance from stock is like night and day. I love VP44s for that reason

If buying a 2nd gen also check the frame , the frame dips down just in front of the front sway bar mounts .. Inside the frame at this low spot holds water, wet sand/dirt and the frame could look like new on the outside but still have a rust hole at this spot . Plus the sway bar bolt threads can rust so bad on the inside that they won't come out without stripping or breaking off ..

I replaced it with a kevlar band billet shaft 47RE and put the HD Converter on it.. Not a problem with it at all.. I put bearings in it while I had the transmission out so she good to at least 500k before an out of frame rebuild.. I can burn 35" tires all day long on it at a stomp of the pedal.. I'm happy with it..

Always been a Mopar guy, often thought about getting a Cummins. They never suited my needs, but would of been better for fuel economy, back when I had the 30' holiday trailer. The '98 and '01 V-10 5 Spds easily handled the load. And for the amount of camping, you could do in central Alberta before winter hits. Couldn't justify the cost. now that I'm over the hill, I'd like to get a 12 valve to install in the '80 Powerwagon.

I had a 1999 2500 4x4, let it go at 251k miles and still ran perfect (should have kept it along with getting the 2004.5 model) Replaced it with a 2004.5 3500 loaded dually 4x4, 5.9 vin C, now at 202k miles and runs perfect. Will pull anything hooked to hitch (stock) Both trucks were and have been kept stock except K&N cold air induction and exhaust replace when factory exhaust developed leaks. Oil change every 5k miles or less (I change fuel filter at every oil change) it's $15-$20 and takes 5 minutes to keep the fuel clean! Take it from a been there done that, brakes! Do not use the typical pad replacements. My 99 ate the brakes until a mechanic friend recommended paying the extra and using Mopar replacement pads, save a lot of headaches. The 2004 will be getting new front pads soon, current Mopar pads have been on since 135k miles. "Knock on wood" both trucks auto transmissions have been perfect, both trucks were/have been used pulling heavy loads. I know people love throwing the tuners in and boosting everything but these trucks do not need it. A friend put a 6 pack tuner in his 2005, ran it for every day driving and engine came apart at 110k miles. Keeping these trucks stock and performing services as needed, they do great.

Two things you mentioned. 1st, the VP44 pump actually gets a good fix once you convert it to the Hot Rod VP44, Industrial Injection just knows what they're doing when they build these. Lastly, the 47RE is a shitty transmission stock, weak points were the torque converter, the output shaft, and the input shaft. While line pressure is low, you will burn through packs. But, man ATS builds the shit out of these 47's. They quickly go from the shittiest tranny to the tranny of choice for racing and pulling. There are Duramax's running 47RE at the last Diesel Power Challenge in lieu of the Allison. The Duramax/Allison combo is great, but the 1-2 and 3-4 shift defuel so bad you loose a lot of ET. The Torqueshift tranny on Fords are some of the best STOCK. But that 6.0 liter was a hot mess.

I’d like to add that not all teenage Cummins drivers just like to roll coal at the high school. Im a 16 year old and I hate rolling coal, it’s just not beneficial to me and I don’t have the money to be wasting fuel like that. I am running a tuner with “no gauges” but I’m running the quadzilla adrenaline Bluetooth tuner with every single gauge on my phone. I’m not sure if you know how it works considering not many people have them or use them, but they have every gauge you could want. I look at all of my data when I turn my truck off to make sure nothing got over a certain temp and all that, and my friends think I’m stupid for doing it because it’s a Cummins... but at the same time it’s a dodge. So really it just depends on the teenager because some of us want to keep our trucks nice

With the transmission problems the check valve on a trans mission line is a lot of the problem because they get dirty and quit working. I’ve owned quit a few dodges gasoline and Diesel and if there and auto the 1st thing I do is by pass the check valve in the line and put a external color on them. Even if you get a dodge trans rebuilt most places won’t back the warranty if you don’t by pass the check valve in the line and put a external cooler on them.

I would buy a third gen but not past 2006. No EGR no DEF is a good thing with these. And the 48RE is decent trans. And the CP3 pump so much better than a VP44. All you need is add in better fuel filtration. I bought a 2005 Ram 3500 DRW in Patriot Blue with 159,000 miles for 18900 and truck looks and runs like new. PLus it has a class 5 hitch and air lifts in the rear. And has records of oil etc... changes from new. Mostly dealer serviced, and I bought it from a Dodge dealer. Has had the recallted defective air bags replaced

Need help identifying a wire passenger side under the light there's a real short wire with a fairly big grey female plug. Only can go 3" threw the hole in the fender where wires go threw or stay under fender n can just reach the bottom of radiator. Hard to explain the wire but if u have any idea what wire I'm talking about is really appreciate you letting me know where yours connects to. Great vids

i found that the main reason those transmissions break down are due to two reasons , people throwing it into reverse and forward when stuck , no trans can take that abuse . second is towing in overdrive . never tow in overdrive . its all common knowledge .

Aaron Mendez What the hell are you talking about? Look up the 6.0L Powerstroke engine they're complete garbage. You have to spend 10 grand on the damn thing just to make it "bulletproof" which is a Ford fanboy's way of denying the fact that it's a money-thieving piece of shit.

People say run away from the 53 block because of the block has weaker water jacket walls that can crack very easily, which leaks coolant basically just like blowing a head gasket, but that isnt the case with all 53 blocks. The bad 53 blocks typically failed before 100k miles and with the transmissions they typically fail when people dont maintain them and the 47re is the underdog of the 48re which came in the 3rd generations

The only part of a 2nd gen is the body and transmission. Engine: cummins, Axles: Spice/Dana. So guys that talk shit about Dodge trucks, ask em how many people stand In line to own a 20-25 years old Ford or GM truck. Go walk a junkyard or PYP lot and see how many 2nd gens are sitting in there.

47re's aren't bad at all, if you maintain them (band adjustment and fluid changes) they'll last forever. I have 265k miles on my 47re. Never rebuilt, I'm 19 and I drive the thing hard. It is a 97 12v though, #10 fuel plate and 50hp injectors

I'm more of a Duramax or Powerstroke and finally have I heard that the transmission is Dodge truck will break but the engine can still be pulled and used on something else I'm a 18 I know that 6.0 was an absolute failure mostly due too early production no testing was done because epa regulations and GM introduced the Duramax so the 7.3 was getting old but anyway I love the nature of the 6.0 the sound at WOT is beautiful 2003 to 2005 were the worst 6.0 just like the rams the 6.0 went through many changes I work in construction I want to save around $5k and then buy a 6.0 the $5k are for all the parts to bulletproof studs gaskets coolers oil pump injector seals all trucks have had issues Cummins is amazing but not really part of me Duramax are good my dad has an lbz I will get an 05 to 07 6.0 dually
