A few years ago, if someone asked me, “What’s the best watch to start a collection with?”, I might have suggested a Seiko 5 SNK381. But now, I’d say, “Go for the SteelDive SD1970”.
Here’s why.

I bought my 1970 for $51! Frankly, I didn't believe I would like it much. I immediately changed the bracelet to a tropic and it transformed it into a very comfortable feeling watch. Also, the look with this strap is awesome. I was planning to change to dial out but the more I wear it, the more this dial is growing on me. All-in-all, this is an unbelievable value and well made watch. It's a no-branier.

It's great value.. I have the real Seiko Tuna and I got a yellow dial Steeldive Tuna and though I'm a Seiko fanboy, I admit that the Steeldive is better, same NH35, and sapphire crystal, lume that matches Seiko and a nice lumed ceramic bezel, same one as on this I would say. And I've dived with it. I am very impressed by this one too. For the price, it's amazingly good value. Excellent review.

It's Martin Sheen. Well done Steeldive but I prefer my Heimdalr Captain Willard (same movement) as you when you compared these 2 seiko homages 2 or 3 years ago ! This Steeldive is exceptional value for money.

Hey man. I just looked it up. It's Charlie Sheen😅. Glad that you have the Heimdallr. I gave away that watch in a 5000 subscriber give away last year, so I'm kind of missing a Captain Willard in my collection, so that's one of the reasons I've got the SD1970. Anyways, thanks for watching 😎

It was less than half that price last month in the sale, i spent £146 on this, the addiesdive tuna and the addiesdive desert watch. Think my watch itch has been scratched at least until the 11-11 sale starts!

I bought this watch in blue last year. It's awesome! I got both bracelet and a blue rubber strap. Eventually, I'll get the tuna in Yellow.

They have upgraded the clasp on the bracelet from stamped to milled, and they've upgraded the hands from flat to beveled edge matching the real Seiko.

I have the addiesdive Willard and the bracelet sucks.. I ended up putting mine on a Barton tropical strap which in my opinion is a excellent choice, and it was only 13 dollars on Amazon. I really enjoy mine and have had 0 problems with it, you should change the seals and make sure the back is correctly tightened also make sure you use the correct type of grease on the rubber on the case back and you don't need to crank down on it just make sure it's tight...

I just ordered the SD1970 from AE during the 11-11 sale. The watch was $63 USD, but with the sale and discounts I paid just over $47 USD. It has not arrived yet. I hope I didn't get a lemon. We will see. Great review. Thanks.

Hi buddy - Nice review…I have a Pagani Design Speedmaster which I can wear comfortably…would this suit me or the 1977? I am confused between 1970 & 1977?

Hey man. If you can wear the PD Speedmaster, then you'll definitely can wear both the Steeldive SD1970 or SD1977. My personal favourite would be the SD1977 but either will be great. Thanks for watching 😎

How good does it wear compared to sd1953? My wrist flat width is around 51/52mm. Wrist diameter around 6 1/4 or 6 1/2 inches

I think the SD1970 will fit you better. The SD1953 is using a typical sub case design. So it does wear bigger. Thanks for watching 😎

Bought one some month ago but run a average of 12 days in total (very nice running at + 1sec/day ) and after that the movement failed !! So ... a bargain ? not sure at all 😀

failed after 12 days? that's what the warranty is for.... otherwise you can pick up the movement off the internet for around 40 dollars US..

Well yeah. I agree with you on that. But to be fair, Artem sent me 2 pairs of the straps, and the crack only happened on this one. Which is a shame, because it cost a lot to buy. Anyways, thanks for watching 😎

The Frozen Willard is a fabulous watch. But it’s not a real Willard with the flashy dial/bezel. I have it and I love it … but when I want a „real“ Willard look, the SD1970 is the one to go for. Well, the one thing that they both have in common is the absolutely horrible pressed clasp. Get yourself a $10 machined clasp from Ali and Bob‘s your uncle!

Is the Steeldive watch still working after 6 months? No issues? It was "Martin Sheen" that was "Captain Willard" in the movie APOCALYPSE (1979). Charlie Sheen is his son , also an actor. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apocalypse_Now
