Watch Dogs: Legion is an ambitious title. Perhaps a little too ambitious. As much as certain parts of the game shine, you can't help but feel that the game is too clever by half.

@@retrobit5973 yes but they are not taking us seriously if we use terms like "predatory" or "dangerous" ... I mean come on it is insidious yes , it is shitty yes. But talking about this shit like it can impact your life in such a big way makes the publishers think we take the games as a necessity. So they wont stop doing this shit. Edit: I also blame Twitch streamers just because I hate them in principle. A bunch of parasitic shills. Exceptions exist of course. If you do Twitch streaming as a side thing that's fine but full time streamers especially the life streamers are a bunch of mutated parasitic vampire cockroaches. Diseased.

so let's stop making up terms like "toxic" or "predatory monetization"... because this notion that a company that makes games can impact my life to such an extent is absolutely ridiculous. Acting like we are victims. NO! If monetization is bringing in so much money it means we are accomplices not victims. It only reinforces the idea that we take these games as a great necessity. That emboldens the shitty publishers. If a person does not buy a game because of this that's the best way to send them a message. edit: sorry for the passionate response I am in no way blaming you for anything. I was just making a point.

I’m pretty sure Ubisoft have like 4 different engines they are utilizing in their games. I know there’s AnvilNext (the engine used for Assassin's Creed, Rainbow Six Siege, and the recent Ghost Recon games), Snowdrop (used for The Division games, Mario & Rabbids: Kingdom Battle, and Starlink), Disrupt (used for the Watch Dogs games), and Dunia (a fork of the CryEngine used for the Far Cry series starting with Far Cry 2). They do all have their quirks for sure. As you mentioned, Dunia has horrible AO, AnvilNext is very CPU heavy, SnowDrop seems to be very flexible in terms of the hardware it can run on, and I’m sure Disrupt has it's own quirks too.

"Disjointed" is Watch Dogs in a nutshell, the first two games had main characters and what you saw in the cut scenes still didn't really match what you were doing in the game. Ubisoft is like the opposite side of Rockstar's open worlds. Rockstar has tons of detail to the characters and the world, but focuses a bit too much on linear storytelling with set pieces in between. You know, they could have made that a plot point. Have a big late game reveal that 'surprise, the player is actually a mind controlling AI/virus program that's been puppeting all those people this whole time.' Have a neat scene where the people you've been puppeting discuss the issue of morality involved in doing this. Because on the one hand, that's creepy and disturbing. But on the other, joining Deadsec is a choice offered to them, if slightly in ignorance of what it actually means. People who got used for missions could admit to the others how much the AI/Virus helped them to do what they couldn't have done otherwise, and if you combine it with a hidden tracker for deaths as a character you could have those who 'died' a lot when you used them talk about how many risks the AI took with their lives. There's some opportunity to make this mechanic mean something in universe that Ubisoft ignored, as they often do, and that's too bad.

Think of Assassin's Creed Syndicate which, just like this game, has a map with collectibles and fast travel, zones that need to be liberated by clearing outpost, a liberation story about oppression and classes, and is also in London. The recruiting system is nice but you can't deny this is getting repetitive. Fra Cry, Ghost Recon, Assassin's Creed, Watchdogs... t's the same game over and over with a different skin and "new" mechanics to match the skin. Plus they have microtransactions now which sucks. Ubisoft just isn't the innovative and cool company it used to be. I'm gonna wait a year to buy it on sale, it's just not worth full price.

My issue with the design philosophy, is sure, there are multiple approaches. But these levels are designed to make it possible for any character with any skillset to be able to complete. To the point where it doesn't really feel like you've come up with a creative solution. For example in the new dues ex games, you know they made sneaking possible so every place has a vent you can access to sneak through. It doesn't feel amazing to find a event, it doesn't feel like clever level design. You can hear the devs saying, make sure you put a vent in each location so people can stealth. It becomes a mandatory feature. Watchdogs takes this and turns it to 11. You can do 'everything' to the point where you really aren't doing anything.

I get what you mean, I love immersive sims but that's a problem I've had with deus ex too. The world and level design feels really artificial in it, so it didn't work really well as an imsim imo. If the game makes you feel like it's guiding your actions too much it isn't being a good imsim. But games like Dishonored 2 and Prey have really organic worlds I'm which you can do really crazy stuff. Prey especially is the pinnacle of imsims for me. It really gives you enough tools and has a good enough level design so that you'll certainly do a lot of stuff the devs haven't thought of.

I agree on alot of the story stuff but I felt connected to my crew of dudes i recruited. I spent the first 20 hours just recruiting my team and that was the funnest part of the game for me. I built my own team, made up relationships (In my heads) and created bonds (again in my head). I dont think a game like this needed such a detailed story with a crazy narrative and voice acting, honestly the gameplay is so great that all they needed to do is add more to do with your team, maybe some interaction with team, some base building like MGSV, some character bonds like XCOM2, and generally more ways to interact with the world. In the future if they want to continue with telling a seriouse narrative they should have the player create 4 - 5 arhcetype from scratch with create a character that way the lypsicing and facial animations arent so much of problem. I personally dont care about that stuff, the gameplay is great and thats all that matters to me, the narrative is just a bonus

Nice review, SkillUp! Glad to hear your thoughts on this one. Curious to see if this game will have a negative impact on sales for AC Valhalla or Immortals for Ubisoft. Reminds me a little of the Titanfall 2 debacle that EA had a few years back. Thoughts?

As someone with a 16:9 screen, I'd love to see more ultrawide content. The wider FOV really lets you show more stuff in the same amount of time. It's also somehow kinda more fun to watch in my personal opinion.

On the part of the disconnection with the player and character part. I’ve always picked my own main character at the start. Then do most of the main missions with that character. I’ll do the side stuff and recruiting with other characters. Idk if that works for everyone it’s something I do.

@@DravicPL Pop-in is not the same as draw distance. Pop-in is a result of draw distance being too low and/or asset loading issues. Most games try to hide the pop-in as much as possible. This was just a bit of an accidental irony, which I found funny.

Thanks for the review. Can't wait to goof around with the game mechanics. I generally enjoy your reviews a lot! Then some critics about your sponsor. I had an inno3d ichill x3 1080ti. The craftmanship of the coolers contact plate was very subpar. The contact plate had about half a millimeter grooves on it all the way. I found this out when I was changing the cooling paste (card was HOT). I'm not sure if this was intentional, but it was a very weird way to machine a contact plate that should have a best possible contact with the die. This was very disappointing because otherwise the cooler was very rigid with 5 heatpipes if I remember correctly. If only the contact plate would have had a good contact, the cooler would probably be very efficient. Back then they used to market the fourth fan of the x4 as a SLI-fan that was supposed to help the cooling of the lower GPU of the SLI-configuration. No SLI on the 3080, but they still have the tiny fourth fan. This and the contact plate makes me to think that they don't engineer their products very much.

I do have to say, based on the title of thee video vis-a-vis some of the criticism you direct at the game, I feel like you are giving Ubisoft a bit of a free pass for being so....
