I done my timing belt on my 2002 Toyota Sequoia Rwd same engine i changed it at 320,000 miles now its up to 340,000 n still running solid absolutely love my SUV my daily driver

I am 19 years old and have an 07 Limited 4WD in Pearl White, fully loaded. I learned to drive with it and was my first car when I turned 16. My parents bought it brand new in 07 when I was 3 years old and I grew up with that car. I drove it all through high school and now in college, 7 hours away from home. It’s got 254k miles that my parents and I put each one on. Absolutely zero rust because we are from North Alabama. I even put on some performance mods to give it an extra kick and the engine still runs like new. I’m having the regular manifold leak so I’m about to upgrade to some LT headers in about a year. The only time the car wouldn’t start throughout our 16 years of ownership is when the battery died in 2016 😂. My ball joints are even the original ones, I get them checked out multiple times a year and just this past weekend, I took it to Toyota and they said they’re still fine. The shocks are worn out though so I purchased some bilstein 4600s and am waiting for those to come in. All in all, my family has had multiple cars, spanning from a 98 4runner, a 2017 Lexus Es350, a 2014 Infiniti qx80, and a 2021 Silverado, but we still think that our sequoia is the best car we’ve ever had. It’s the one car that has never given us any issues and it’s the only one that tows in my family because it tows so comfortably with the rear air suspension. I told my parents that no matter what happens, I’m never getting rid of the car for sentimental reasons and the fact that it’s literally bulletproof, doing all of the hard work I’ve needed it to do.

I ended up finding a good deal on an ‘03 about 5 years ago. Stack of maintenance records and 330 k miles. Haven’t had problems with the brake booster or valve cover gaskets. Timing belt done around 350k. Shocks/struts, ball joints, rack bushings, OEM coils/new plugs, GX brake upgrade, and other various small things. Sitting at 425k now and it’s a daily driver. Helps I can DIY. Might not be worth it if I was paying a shop.

i'm working on gaining enough knowledge and money to DIY Sh*t myself because i have a very easy to fix problem with a high price tag. all the tools to do it cost more than the shop doing it.

This engine is bullet proof with maintenance. The abc construction of the this block will never fail if respected. The cam seals aren’t so hard to do. Also when you buy a used car, be aware you will spend money the first year. ALSO USE OEM PARTS. Toyotas hate aftermarket junk. They spit it right out.

Yup this is my 22nd vehicle to my name so I’m used to fixing stuff, but this seems like it needs a lot of TLC for something that was well maintained on paper - just older Toyota problems! I also have a higher standard that most when it comes to my vehicles

Just passed 350k with my '02. Not a lot of unexpected issues beyond old-car things. It's 20 years old so things like rubber hoses, gaskets and bushings need replacing. Suspension components like ball joints, tie rods, bearings and shocks wear out. Brakes, tires, and batteries are normal things. The alternator lasted for 300k. Radiator 320k. Still orig starter. Never adjusted the engine or the trans besides fluids. The only things that broke were the tailgate stuff, and there's a water trap behind the rear doors that breeds rust. That's about it beyond regular maintenance items.

Nice! I had an 02 with 300k years ago and it didn’t need half the things this one needs 😂 Simpler non vvti engine. A lot of stuff was replaced on this when I got it but unfortunately I am always finding more. The ball joints, suspension and tie rod ends made it feel like new, and then I got the oil leak (cam seals) and figured I’d get the timing belt done also 😂 So hopefully everything will be good for a while! I gotta remember 2005 is a long time ago, feels like yesterday

Ive experienced a lot of the same... the worst is the SAS... When that goes, just get a bypass kit. Truck is still worth it. All cars require maintenance EOD. Keep up with the Sequoia's and it's not too bad at all.

i had the timing belt replaced May of 2022 and im glad i bought the full kit instead of just the timing belt and water pump. its expensive to do but well worth it.

Bought my 2004 for $4k in 2020. Now has 180,000 miles. Bought aisin timing belt and water pump kit for $170 and paid local mechanic $400 to install. Original belt looked almost new.

Biggest problem with my 02 tree is the frame has quite a bit of rust, at a glance it just looks like surface rust, fingers crossed that's all it is

I have a serious question, since the brake booster and power steering have a vacuum line, yes the power steering has a air control valve and if that is bad will that cause brakes to become soft/squishy since both vacuum hoses run to the intake manifold?

would you upgrade the fuel tank? And if so is it possible because I would want to do it to mine. I want to upgrade my limited with a lot of the same stuff as yours. If you don’t mind me asking how much has all of this costed with purchase and maintenance fees?

I would add two more things to your list. Steering rack seals start leaking with age. Don't let this condition go on for very long, or you will be replacing a lot of other stuff. A genuine Toyota/Asin rebuilt rack is the only way to go for a replacement. The 2nd thing is the 2 "T" fittings connecting the heater hoses near the fire wall in the engine bay. These are made of micarta. The ones on my Sequoia lasted 22 years before I began to smell anti-freeze and observed a pink "mud" buildup at the connections. They deteriorate with age and become porous before they fail altogether. Inexpensive and easy to replace.

The timing belt took me 2 weeks waiting for parts. Might as well buy a new aisin fan bracket too. There is a oring behind that water neck you left on. These belts last I have a 02 that is original. The truck only has 141k miles. It's on my to do list. My neighbor use to commute and had 300k on his belt that was round 10 years old. He had no idea it needed to be replaced. I moved and lost contact with him but I'm sure he eventually got it replaced.

Nice! That’s what I’ve heard but better safe than sorry. I got that O ring you mentioned and did cam seals too. Took everything apart and cleaned it, and back in again. Has about 600 miles on it since the job and no issues so far 🤞 Hopefully it’ll be solid for a while

I ended up just doing the Aisin kit from Rock Auto with everything and then OEM cam seals from a dealer

I’ve heard from a few people that the secret is overhauling the cooling system every 7 years. Also obviously be diligent about timing belt, water pump, tensioners etc.

I've never overhauled the cooling system. Just a new radiator at 260k miles. Had 390k miles now.

I have 200k on an '05. I bought it with 65k miles for $16k. I have only added a cold air intake I installed myself. Other than that, basic maintenance has been its only expense. Out of all of the vehicles that I have owned, it has become my favorite. P.S. Gas mileage is horrible.

Bought an 04 for $3000 with 202,000 replaced timing belt water pump, fan clutch, idlers tensioners, belts, radiator and Toyota coolant, battery, spark plugs, o2 sensors, tires $1900 in parts. @225,000 miles 2 years later. Still need dif and transmission fluid. Gonna be in it as much for parts as the original purchase price soon😅

So I have a 06 Sequoia limited with 205300 on her about 3 months ago my Trac off, vac Trac engine light came on, so up till now I have done the following, mass air flow, air filter, PCV, new injectors, spark plugs and coils, new O2 censors, rear carbon box, fuel purge valve, and the dam lights are still on !! Seems that I have found the rabbit hole and I am half way down it without a flash light, any ideas ?

The list is identical to 1st gen Tacomas except maybe the cam seals. Got 280K on mine. Timing belt will be due again around 310K or so. My job looks a little easier than yours though.

2001-2003 are the best 1st gen sequoia in my opinion. They are much more simpler to repair

Anyone else has this problem, if you step on the gas somewhat lightly or if you let go of the gas, it just feels like it loses power. I’m thinking it could be throttle related, maybe even u joints but don’t know

There hella reliable and easy to maintain. Timing belt takes an hour. Just clean throttle body with it apart the 4.7 was new to drive by wire and it affects the way it runs

Definitely. I don’t know about an hour there lol. Just getting the radiator, fan off and disassembly takes more than an hour. Plus new water pump, gasket, timing belt itself and cam seals, then reassembly and making sure you did it all right 😂 Took me probably 8-10 hours all added up!

@@MartyMotoring I’m a master certified tech and work on Japanese cars I’ve done at least 30 4.7 timing belts with the water pump. On cruisers and sequoias I pull the radiator for the space tundras and runners I usually don’t but the fastest I’ve done it is just over an hour. I call it Toyota therapy. Book time is 6 hours

@@_JTPR_ Wow, I see. That’s real fast. Makes sense after doing so many! This was my first one but I think it’ll go faster when I do it next at around 400k miles. I do everything slow so I always multiply the book time by 2 😂 But my mechanic skills are getting better, for a musician and IT guy, anyway. Lol. - Marty

About 2 years ago I bought a original owner 05 GX 470 with 94k on it. I now have 104k on it *3000 miles of it moving cross country* The timing belt , water pump, tires brakes, alignment ,tranny fluid change and a new battery at 84k all documented by the original Lexus dealer from which it was purchased. I called the dealer and they still have service records for it. I'm planning on continuing the maintenance as required by Lexus. I plan on driving this vehicle for the long hall. Remember,it could be worse. You could be rebuilding an entire engine on an American made vehicle half it's age with half the mileage! 😵‍💫

I traded a 2015 jeep Cherokee trail hawk for it in 2021. The Jeep had the 3.2 pentastar v-6 notorious for multiple engine issues. One of those being defective rocker arm bearings. Before a planned move and drive cross country in the summer of 2022 I started noticing a unusual ticking sound coming from the motor rocker arms. Needless to say I traded it at Toyota/Nissan dealer in my city. The Jeep KBB was listed at 15-19k. I traded strait across. The GX was one owner in near mint condition. I mean the GX was as if in a time capsule. I may have overpaid but this vehicle was a creampuff. No wear on the interior . Front seat leather was perfect,no wear on the steering wheel, no cracks in the dash,no scratches anywhere. All service,new Michelin tires, brakes, t-belt, water pump etc. Rare bird good bye Chrysler currently seeing the Kelly bb listing 05 gx's for 10-12 in excellent condition.

Yes, and Toyotas aren’t magic and you can’t just keep driving them lol. Gotta fix stuff like every other vehicle. But many love to say “I didn’t have to do anything but oil changes and brakes”, which is lie at 300k+ 😂

​@@mattwernecke2342 I've had a few cars almost up there and they still needed things, but definitely cost less than a truck to fix, and less wear and tear. I could see a Prius not needing much with a small engine and hybrid system and FWD. I think the larger size and weight, bigger tires, 4WD, and thristy V8 just wear a little bit more, plus a timing belt that needs changed. Timing chains are so nice in Toyota/Lexus...never had to change one!

2002 with 262k miles not even well maintained and the motor and tranny operate like the day it rolled off the showroom floor. I respect the opinion of skilled techs, not some hack with a handful of extra parts and an axe to grind due to his own lack of understanding and skill

Looks like the clickbait worked. Lol. Those same “skilled” techs are probably 18 years olds that stripped your oil drain bolt but you wouldn’t know. I’ve seen it happen a lot which is why I work on my own stuff. My engine is working great at 316k miles after doing all the work myself. Toyotas aren’t magic and can break like any other vehicle :)

The Sequoia first gen went until 2007, the new gen started in 2008. It was always one year behind the Tundra in the past

Not sure exactly what you’re talking about you have contradicted your self a 100 times throughout this video, your car is 300+ k miles what we’re you expecting lol. Of course it’s going to need maintenance and yes this engine is bulletproof.

Well everyone likes to mention how bulletproof and reliable they are but most have never worked on them themselves - there is a lot that can wrong so I’m showing the good and the bad. At the end of the day they are solid, but there is also alot to be aware of.
