The City Center Encores! production of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's Into the Woods began performances May 4 and continues through May 15. Watch highlights from the production in the video above.
The cast is led by Heather Headley as the Witch, Neil Patrick Harris as The Baker, and Sara Bareilles as the Baker's Wife, alongside Denée Benton as Cinderella, Cole Thompson as Jack, Ann Harada as Jack's Mother, Julia Lester as Little Red Ridinghood, Shereen Pimentel as Rapunzel, Gavin Creel as Cinderella's Prince/Wolf, Jordan Donica as Rapunzel's Prince, Annie Golden as Grandmother/Cinderella's Mother/Giant's Wife, and David Patrick Kelly as Narrator/Mysterious Man.

It is SO refreshing to finally see black actors portrayed in this iconic FAIRYTAIL and SONDHEIM musical! It took way too long but it's beautiful! And oh my God the actress playing Cinderella is STUNNING visually and vocally! BRAVO.

I hate to tell you this then...(he smiled with glee)...My 2 kids and I got to see Heather Headley play the Witch in the St. Louis, MO, MUNY production of Into the Woods in July of 2015. She was FABULOUS!!! We waited in a line for just an hour to get Free tickets to see this great production and actress (He told you with an even larger smile on his face.)

This is the cast which should have been in the movie. We saw this twice this week (what luck) and it was wonderful both nights. They are still not completely off book, but rehearsal only began two weeks before the first performance. Nearly everyone fits as if their roles were written for them.

I wish I could see this! I saw the original production 8 times and was fortunate enough to see the 10th anniversay concert in 1997 with the original cast. Sondheim is/was a genius!

It’s interesting that some of the cast changed when it transferred to Broadway. For example, the Baker is no longer played by Neil Patrick Harris but instead Brian D’Arcy James

It’s because this wasn’t planned to be transferred when this production was scheduled. The reception was so shockingly and overwhelmingly positive though, that it ended up moving. But as it goes, celebrities have busy schedules.

Saw this a few days ago. I have to say most of the performances were good but they REALLY dropped the ball on set and cosume design. I mean, Cinderella wearing the same dress for all three days of the festival? It was not even a nice dress, and the shoes looked like they were from Goodwill. Also, Rapunzel looked like a hot mess and had absolutely no charisma. Patina Miller honestly saved the show because of how incredible she was. I just wish they put more effort into the visual aspects.

This production was always, at it's core, bare bones. What's on Broadway was a transfer of this concert. Where emphasis was put on the storytelling/score. And even then I liked this revival's costumes more than the original. They say fairytale without being garish. Beyond that, Into the Woods is such a masterpiece making it a spectacle would be distracting

Roooough. I know this is only a concert and they had very little rehearsal, but there is a dropped lyric and so many wrong notes and bad timing... Hopefully the next few performances get better. Denee was perfection. Everyone around her seemed like an amateur, and I know they aren't.

Okay! Thank GOD I’ve found the one comment with some actual sense. All I see in this comments section is everyone praising this and Im sitting here like, “Are we all listening to the same clip?” Even in this teaser, so many of the notes are wrong and out of tune. I understand that it’s a concert and they had very little rehearsals, however, you can’t halfass Sondheim.
