So this is the last of a series of videos of the House Finch birds. I put together key moments during the 5 weeks when the House Finches make a nest, lay the eggs, and raise the six chicks until they are able to fly away on their own. This is almost all new footage (not a repeat of my previous videos) of the birds and chicks. You'll see the mother House Finch prepare the nest, lay the first egg, feed the hatchlings and watch them grow up until they are ready to leave the nest. You'll also see some interaction between the male and female birds as he feeds her and perhaps an intimate moment too. And then watch the surprise ending to this story as the chicks narrowly escape!
Note that a couple of comments say that these are actually Purple Finches. That may very well be based on the Purple Finch has a red rump, V at bottom of tail and brownish red cheeks and they are native to the Pacific coast (which is where I am)
Timeline:
1:04 First egg is laid
1:43 Cloacal kiss
2:00 Second egg is laid
3:30 First two chicks are hatched
3:45 First feeding
4:44 Third chick is hatched
5:26 All eggs are hatched
7:50 First step outside of nest
9:05 Last feeding by parents
9:25 Sudden escape
10:10 Preparing for next brood

These are both House Finch. Male House Finch have a brown cap and brown around the eye as this bird shows. Also female Purple Finch show a distinct white eyebrow. The bill on a Purple Finch is also straighter. House Finch have more curved culmen. Purple Finch have white undertail coverts. House Finch have streaked undertail coverts

Excellent narrative! When this species was new to me 5 years ago, I learned that the little we can do for them can really make a difference. Yes, I'm concerned about the decline in bird populations around the globe. I thought the most important thing was to feed them in winter. I would put the feeder away as soon as the chickadees disappeared for the spring. Little did I know how desperately do migrating birds need to find feed at their destination or along the way. Then I saw that red head one chilly April morning ... just like on the bird seed bag! He was helping his mate to glean a meal from bits of seeds spilled on my deck. It was the the same way a rooster in the yard makes sure that the hens feed first. (Do most birds do this?). I put the feeder back up & educated myself from Birds of N.America, Golden Press. And, yes, the books call it purple finch or house finch even though the males are strikingly RED. Said to nest along the treeline of the nearby Rockies, at 7000 ft here in SW Alberta, and generally under snow until late May. Well, this pair hung around for a few weeks and fattened up. When they disappeared in May, I did not expect to see them again. But, the feeder stayed up. I noticed that all sorts of new and interesting kinds of birds we're also hanging around. Goldfinches for one thing. A species that prefers to nest in the boreal forest hundreds of miles to the north. My place was no longer just a stopover, and I now feed out twice as much seed in summer as I ever did in winter. The big surprise came one morning at the end of that summer 5 years ago. Lined up on the clothesline that hangs under the covered deck where I first spotted them was a pair of house finches and FOUR fledglings. They fed for a few days and headed south. Ever since, they seem to be nesting nearby, as there are always a few at feeder throughout the summer ... where they fight it out with an army of gold finches. I like to think it started with the same pair who flew in on a spring snowstorm. Had they not found food they might have perished and never reproduced. Sorry I am not as camera savvy as those of you post these remarkable videos. And, today I learned that the female house finch, who is neither purple nor red, moves her eggs around. Cheers!

I have a house finch nest in one of my hanging baskets in my backyard. Four babies now are 2 to 4 day old. I already feel they are part of my family and worried all the time about them. I didn’t see the mother this morning and I was so worried that I literally felt sick. It seems the mother doesn’t always stay in her nest as she did before. I saw the daddy was there once. I hope the babies have enough care from their parents.

For my finches, I observed both the mom and dad going back and forth quite a bit to get food for the chicks. I'm sure they know what they are doing so I don't think you need to worry too much! Also be sure to observe from afar so as to not disturb them too much. Good luck!

I have no idea where my finches nests are but I’ve been seeing lots of little baby finches with fluff still around their heads yelling at mom and dad. Kind of hilarious as they’ve followed their mom and dad right into a bowl of finch seed, lol! So fun to see the whole process.

I had a little nest just outside my door. It was really something to see how quickly these little birds go from an egg to a little fledgling. I always enjoy how it seems the entire finch community participates in raising the little fledglings. The dads do the feedings. They both take turns. I think the babies stick together even beyond the nest. It's really cool to watch. At a distance, it kind of compares our own families. Magical video.

You are very observant! I had not noticed the parents losing weight! The parents were feeding them for a little over two weeks before the Scrub Jay showed up.

We had one for about 4 months. Rescued her from sidewalk and couldn’t find the nest or parents. Hand fed her until she could feed herself and we let her fly around the house. She was so smart and followed us everywhere. Then one day she decided to escape and flew out the door and was gone. We miss her, but we know we saved her life. Hope to see her again sometime.

Sadly, for the second time this summer, we have awoken and found our house finch nest completely empty. The first time, the eggs were pilfered by a squirrel, we think, because my dog went crazy (a Great Pyrenees) and this time the little guys were about 8 days old, and we have no idea what happened. No sign of them left. :( I'm suspecting a Blue Jay or maybe a Grackle.

I wonder if allowing the dog to patrol the front of the house would keep away potential predators, she has never shown any aggression towards song birds in the past, but she does try to attack crows, raccoons, possums, etc.

I wish we could post photos on here. I have a house finch nest on a wreath at front door. The mother left for a few today and I got up on a chair from inside my house and was able to get a photo from the window. She had 4 or 5 eggs but all I see is two little things with skin and a little fur. I dunno if something happened to the other eggs unless the two babies are laying on them. I wish I knew how to tell if there a day old or more. Either way it’s such a joy to watch and an honor too that they picked my front door 😆

The mother probably laid those eggs on sequential days and so the chicks will each hatch about a day apart. So keep on looking and you should see some more chicks soon! Good luck!

@@garysbackyard2517 Hey so question the babies all hatched a few days after I posted that I didn’t realize there were 4 in there. Question do you know the feeding habit of the parents. All day yesterday I noticed the mom wasn’t around and I thought they were dead this morning but I went and looked and there moving alittle. I’m just worried because I don’t see the mom around. I thought she would be feeding all day long but that’s not the case

This is great! I have some house finches at my house right now (about 12 days old). I'd love for the finches to come nest here again but the poop wreath is gross! Should I clean out the poop or take out the nest entirely when all the babies leave the nest? There had been a nest prior to this batch and mama renovated it, so I'm not sure if keeping the nest there (poop and all?) will encourage her to come back.
@garysbackyard2517

Yes I know that it is gross. I cleaned out the nest since I knew the Scrub Jay may come back and put in a bird house in its place. But no birds this year. I have a feeling that they will come back if you leave the nest but I know it looks very nasty!

Yes they are around 17 days old when they leave the nest. The eggs seem to be laid at a rate of one egg per day and hatch about one per day. For a House Finch brood this year, the first chick left on Day 19 and the rest left the next day.
