Several years ago, I sold an iphone 5s on ebay. It was in great condition and in full working order. I packed it well, in it's original box plus bubblewrap and outer packaging. I think I sold it for £80.00. A while later, the buyer sent me some pictures of an iphone 5s, saying it was the one I sold them but it had arrived 'water-damaged'. I knew there was no way that my phone could have been water damaged the way I had packed it. However, ebay took the word of this lying buyer and took the funds back from my account and obviously refunded them. I tried to dispute this with ebay but have you ever tried this with them? You cannot communicate with them. Impossible, certainly from the UK! They took my money, so I was left without my goods or my money. I have never sold or bought on ebay since. They are crooks.

EBAY is horrible when it comes to scammers. We sold an expensive radio for several hundred dollars. The scammer made it a habit of buying radio items then claim "not as described." I went in and contacted everyone under his account. This was typical of him. He would get a refund, seller wouldn't get their money back and he literally would send back a box of bricks, a different radio, etc. Ebay continually allows this to happen with this guy. He would then sell the item on Ebay. It's pathetic!

Unfortunately so. An item like this with loads of photos though you're in a better position. It's items like CDs and games where they can claim they're not working which is harder. Had to stop selling those sort of items through gsp as they claim a fault and know as it's lower value its going to cost me more to ship back than item is worth so they end up getting for free. Very annoying.
@AM-xo7lr

@@stefan8303 I always insist the buyer returns the item because I want their complete satisfaction, blah blah. They usually disappear at that point because they don't actually want to lose the item they have waited for. As soon as you refund without asking for return of the item, it's worth it to a bad buyer to try it on.

eBay sellers need to get together and create an online database of bad buyers so we can add them to our blocked buyer lists. This list would obviously need to be available only to verified sellers (maybe with a certain feedback) to stop people from being added randomly from people with a grudge.

Hi Nic, you need to take note of the serial number of every product you sell, then use the invisible marker pen on the item, with the code of your choice, to identify it was your sale. The UK Police did give these pens out for free to mark all your possessions in your home, the writing can be seen with ultra violet light. Hope this helps.

I've been selling for just under 2 years on eBay and have had a handful of infuriating cases. I SO WISH that there was a way for sellers to name these folks...I'd go in an add a mass of folks to my blocked list! eBay not only takes the buyer's side 95% of the time, they don't give sellers a way to provide honest feedback about what transpired. Feedback should be 2-way in all completed transactions. It would give much more legitimacy to the process and perhaps buyers would see that they, too, are accountable and can be ferreted out when they choose to scam someone.

The problem is if Nic actually named and shamed then he could be in clear breach of GDPR and could end up in a world of pain far worse than being scammed. Even if just the user name was shared eBay could take a very dim view of that and just ban him from selling. It sucks but it's just not as easy as name and shame, unfortunately if you run a business you have to allow for a certain amount of scamage, it's not much better if you have a B&M shop where people just walk in and steal stuff either.

Not necessarily does Ebay always side with the seller. my wife bought some items early this year from an ebay seller, I was at home all day on the day they were supposed to be delivered, she got a text saying the items had been delivered, texted me to check as she was anxious to know we definately had them, as they were uite expensive and we regularly suffer with delivery drivers dumping and running, but the doorbell hadn't rung all day, so I checked outside, nothing She raised the issue with ebay who said as the delivery was confirming by the delivery company we needed to raise the issue with the seller who should then raise the issue with the delivery company, The seller refused to get involved saying as delivery had been confirmed as far as they were concerned we must have received it, and suggested we contact the delivery company, We did this and the delivery company claimed they had concrete evidence, photos and gps data to prove they had delivered it to us, and provided us with their photographic evidence, which was of a house that clearly wasn't ours, they also confirmed gps showed delivery had been made to our address in Litchfield (we live about 8 miles from Litchfield), we took a photo of our frontage to demonstrate the obvious difference and confirmed google earth steetview showed our house clearly as different to the one in the "proof of delivery photo. The delivery company became entrenched in their position and insisted we had received the package, So We went back to ebay with the evidence of obvious discrepancies in the photographic and gps data. to be told affer inestigation we didn't have a case as we'd received the package Now move forward 2 months and a we get a knock at the door, a nice chap has our parcel, he tells us it was delivered to his elderly grandmother who had been fretting over what to do with it as it wasn't hers since. her address was similar to ours, the difference being hers was an avenue while ours was a drive, however we live at number 3, she lived at 13.but there is no number 3 on her road. inspecting the package you can see it clearly addressed to my wife, but someone, most likely at the delivery company had scribbled a 1 infront of the 3, crossed out the drive and scrawled Av, and changed the postcode to match this new address. he did tell us she tried to tell the driver that no one of the name he gave lived at the address, but he insisted she take it. So no Ebay don't always just take the buyers side, even when they should.

There are at least an equal amount of sellers who are scammers on eBay. As a seller and a buyer with eBay for over 18 years I have some advice for sellers. This is to ALWAYS use tracked shipping. Make it crystal clear in your listing that you re not responsible for delayed shipments, security mark items most likely to be switched/swapped, such as video games. Don't be aggressive or rude to buyers as this will only make them more inclined to involve eBay. From a buyers side - eBay often unfairly "remove" negative feedbacks from sellers who have a high sales records and are not so keen to remove genuine neg feedback for sellers with a high sales rating. Scamming is a two way street unfortunately.

I do agree with psrtial refund but only in certain circumstances. For example, if a buyer sees a mark or damage I didnt notice (it happens, we are all only human!). I will ask him to send me a photo of the damage or mark. I will then offer a partial refund (depending on the extent of the damage) to save the buyer having to open a return and send it back. But I will always give the buyer the choice if the complaint is genuine. In Nics case it was obviously a try on from the buyer.

I sold a genuine masterpiece transformers action figure. The buyer claimed I'd sent him a fake/knockoff. He returned the item and sure enough he put a knockoff figure in the box instead of the one I sold him. I fought tooth and nail but ebay, as they always seem to do, sided with him. I lost a couple of hundred quid and lost a figure. I will never sell anything of value on there again

See I see what your saying, but as an eBay reseller myself, we really on positive feedback, and it sometimes feels like buyers can use that against you. So if I have to refund £5 in order to keep a clean reputation I will. I sell used items, and 2 out of 10 items. I get a complaint. Sometimes it's my stupid fault, I miss something out in the listing or I make a silly mistake (we all do) but it's better for me to keep a clean reputation, and loose £5 or £3 or £7 depending on value of the item, than end up with bad feedback that could potentially ruin your reputation.

@@key2theuniverse713 Oh yikes. If you're offering partial refunds out of fear of bad feedback you are literally feeding the monster and driving a behaviour that becomes a problem for all of us. I've been doing this for a long time, and I would always advise sellers never to act out of fear of feedback: one bad mark doesn't put me off as a buyer and it won't put your buyers off either. I've never received bad feedback in 20 years of part time ebaying, mostly because it's a mutual hostage situation. Bound to happen one day, but I'll swallow it and move on - one fly won't spoil the ointment. Out of genuine concern for another seller, though, I'd say a twenty percent complaint rate is very high - my rate is more like one percent and I sell all sorts of unrelated tatt. It's better to brutally display and list every conceivable fault an item has so that buyers know what they're getting - stuff still sells, believe me. I'm not putting it on when I say that I've only ever had my bluff called once - I couldn't prove it wasn't damage from the mail system. I made him return the item, was prepared to swallow the loss rather than be taken for a mug - but actually the automatic postal insurance you get with all RM deliveries covered the loss. C'mon now, don't be a selling mouse! All best for 2020, whatever it has in store for us.

Hi Brigitte, its a great idea but unfortunately it wont work. How do eBay know you didnt film you packing it....then unpack it and put a brick in a box and send it to them. Because it's distance selling, the unfortunate truth is that eBay forces you to accept all returns, and as soon as 'something' is returned to you as a seller, you have to refund in full. Luckily there's few buyers who know the power they hold and, as Nick mentions, the ones who abuse the system are a tiny minority.

Well done for standing your ground Nic. I had a misunderstanding with an ebay seller recently. I cancelled an order as I forgot to change the delivery address. I then placed another order which I never received. When I politely asked the seller if they had sent my order, they said they hadn't sent me anything and claimed they had refunded both my orders which they hadn't. Ebay resolved it for me in the end and I got my money back :-)

Hi Nic, I had a similar issue when I sold my old smeg kettle. It was heavily used and broken and sold for parts only - the fact that it was broken was stated all over the listing with every fault and flaw included. The buyer said the lid was snapped off. It wasn’t and couldn’t possibly have happened during transit as the kettle was extremely well packaged (he said it wasn’t!) and it would have taken extreme brute force to snap the lid off the kettle, not something that could possibly happen unless the postie unwrapped the parcel, snapped the kettle lid himself and wrapped it up again and delivered it! Despite it being clear in my photos that the lid was intact when sold, eBay still came down on his side and I ended up accepting his proposal of a partial refund just to put the whole thing to rest even though he was clearly on the scam. I’m guessing he brought it hoping he could use the element or something, decided he couldn’t and wanted his money back. I was in negative profit by the end of it, I would have been better off putting it in the bin. I’m avoiding selling electricals on eBay again. It’s a piss take.

eBay's legal department is full of morons. Distance selling regulations ONLY apply to BUSINESS SALES, not personal sales. If you're not registered as a business like me I refuse to accept returns and make it clear in my listings, and I still have 100% feedback. FYI I was with eBay long before most people on the uk as I started with ebay.com 2 years before eBay.co.uk happened.

As often as this happens, the postal service or shipping stores should offer verification services. For a nominal fee the could compare the item in the box with the pictures on the listing and the address on the package with the address of the buyer and then seal it themselves and accept it for shipment.

Back home the Postman , in case no one its at home , he leaves a card so you can collect in the post office from the next day (you have 7 working days to collect) , or if his a company like DHL or Parcel Force , ect , they will contact you on the phone to make sure you are at home or arrange another day/time to receive the parcel . when sending stuff, couple things to note... if an item is unboxxed, on the underside, under a label or a foot or battery compartment or even if its in an obvious location but not openly visible, scratch (not pen or texta) a recognisable marker ON the device, such as 3 small holes in a triangle shape or in a line. Use a sewing needle or a compass point.. Then take a picture of the unit as well as the markers. and video packaging it. If you can unscrew and access inside, like a laptop or printer or anything modular, id suggest do that on the inside, or on the inside location on evey part. This way you have a thorough record. Once u have all these, if u think the buyer is tryin to pull a swapsie, tell them to get on skype (while youre recording your feed) and direct them to wherever you have the markers. If those markers ARE NOT THERE, then u know theyre tryin to scam you. If they are there, you pull out your video/pics of the items before sending and cross check any key sections. Its not hard to safeguard yourself from scammers. As a buyer, youre more likely to be scammed in recieving damaged goods. so if an item is expensive, always ask foa video demo or imagines /video of the item before sending. This way, you know that what you get is what was pictured. Often, people will buy a duplicate copy of an item, photo the new item and sell off the old one using the new item's images. Other times, theyll sell you goods and not deliver. Then balk time so bad, that by the time it comes to leaving feedback, you cant as the time has expired, so DO NOT BE KIND to late deliveries. Ive had deliveries take over 3 months, its ridiculous... Even the crappiest of phones has a basic camera, so theres no excuse. If u wish to protect yourself, use paypal. Ive bought camera lenses sold as s/h working fine or 'hardly used' only for them to be on their way out, full of fungus, or simply defective. Other times, electrical devices have failed under warranty and In Aus we have 12months coverage for new goods, or one month return on s/h goods, or one week returns for dead on arrival. ALL warranty is at the expense of the seller On ebay, if the buyer claims a defect, and seller refuses a return, and the buyer sends the item back, they automatically get their money back the moment ebay systems pick up a delivered status. On the flipside, theres the paypal resolution, where no items are returned, BUT depending on prev correspondence you can either claim the repair cost, portion for a part refund, or if the seller is tryin to scam and cant be contacted, they'll jsut gve you a clean straight refund. However to do the paypal thing, u have to show proof that youve attempted to address the problem In your case, if you have pictures, or video or have marked the item, great. This lets u identify it as prev described.. If youre item was new, you tell them before shipping that you will open the box to check all items are there (and u take pics and send those pics to the buyer) before u send the item. U also mark the new device if they consent. If they dont want you to open the packaging, open it anyway unless its heat sealed. If its only some tape on a box, ALWAYS use MROE tape to cover up where you cut the tape. THEN you take pics AFTER youve retaped it. Its not hard to protect yourself Cover you backside.. always...

I would be very careful with trusting the “If he sends the incorrect one back”. eBay like to side with the buyer 99% of the time. Had an issue with an iPad, buyer claimed not as described. Sent back an entirely different device in about 5 pieces. eBay couldn’t care less and kept to the original decent. Repeatedly claiming the buyer sent it back so I have no choice. Honestly just watch out for eBay.

Had the same situation. With a mobile..The guy scammed me by showing eBay is same old phone, stating this is how he received my one I had sent. he showed photos to eBay blurry at best but broken in bits stating it was my fault. That he wanted is money back. I eventually got no phone back via eBay or refund after a lengthy back and forth strained dialogue. Plus the cheeky bastard gave me negative feedback. Of which I could not delete. After that I washed my hands with eBay altogether. It’s Hopeless platform for the seller....They need drastic changes. To protect the seller.. I know it’s crazy to say. Just a idea ! And I know privacy is a must today. But I think eBay should bring in a video opening arrangement, with a password network that is only accessible to the buyer and seller and eBay, if there ever where to be disputes. Example “ The buyer receives the goods... on which are pre paid plastic type coded ties, purchased by the seller from eBay as some type of protective membership in place to protect the seller. They then are to be cut only via a mobile video footage recording only, and then the video submitted to the eBay platform for storage. After 14 days the video is automatically deleted. On this page viewing type of subscription the buyer as to comply with the rules first. Especially for items over $50 for instance. This simple mobile 5 min opening of the contents, must comply with eBay rules and contents shown in details 360 %. Otherwise the buyer defaults on any given disputes. If Regs’’ and rules’ are flouted. As I said’’ Especially for items over a greater value than the possible loss to the seller who may not be able’’ or cannot easily replace or compensate the loss or the stress of a situation such as your own. Just Carrying on from the above ! This information is then stored by the shared compliance of the ‘’paid viewer scheme’’. This is of course In the event of a possible scam...or presumed damage of the said item. I know it sounds all too much.. This idea... Maybe... But it’s true invention and concept’’ is within it’s prevention in the first instance of it at all taking place. Therefore stopping possible scams in the future. just by the agro of seeing such a scheme in place, will hopefully deter the scammer who will perceive it as not worth it. and just avoid. In the first place. It will then not be a issue with a genuine buyer who wants it on the premises of honesty..

Another trick these scammers try is to send you a recorded delivery letter so they have proof of delivery, then claim with ebay thats the item returned. Ebay sides with them, and so you lose the xash and also the item. The scammer makes a double hit. Its almost impossible to explaim this to ebay, who almost always side with the buyer, and will refund them from your account without your authority so you lose twice
