Man, you have to have a light touch on this kind of work. You can always take wood off, but you can't put it back if you're heavy-handed. Great skill and demo -- thanks.

Thank you for this. I am building up the courage to attempt making a neck from scratch, and I was just looking for some ideas on the best approach, with the tools I have, which are a spoke shave, a plane, a set of rasps, a flat sander, a table saw, a scroll saw, and by some luck I appear to have the same Black and Decker angle grinder :-) I've only ever used it for metalwork before, so I think I'll now have to go and take a look at the sort of woodworking discs that are available.

Try using a Japanese Shinto saw rasp instead of that common metal one u were using. They are awesome for this kind of wood work. It has both coarse side and fine side in one tool. Well just a suggestion if you've never tried one. Your videos are always full of great information that works! KUDOS to you and thanks for ur vids.

je jee you're welcome. basically you use a router to cut a cavity for the truss rod either under the fretboard or at the back of the neck. i'm no luthier but i figure people that do it on the back either do it for aesthetics or they're using a solid neck (like maple) and not using a glued fretboard

Its not that hard to do what he is doing. Just do it, of course you will make mistakes your first couple tries but after building a few necks you'll find its really not magical like everyone wants it to be, just another strat neck. Not hating on this guy's work at all just putting it into perspective. You can knock a strat neck carve out almost as fast with a set of dragon rasps from stewmac.

This neck would not please a pro, its typical CNC style, took off the fat but didn't trim the meat you left the bulk of the work on there. In my shop, we constantly hand carve these necks to a shape and feel that I have heard it said wow that feels like dying for so its back to the drawing for you, good luck.

@jamesrockford2626
@jamesrockford2626 8 жыл бұрын
good video but the time you spent building this neck you could have just bought one from warmoth for $100... Time is money. 35 dollars worth of parts/amterials, the 20 minutes to build it and the 1 hour you are going to spend fretting it will be more than buying a neck. When leo designed Strats and teles his sole intention was to make disposable necks that's why he used the cheezy bolt on concept unlike real highend elite boutique builders

Just so we're clear, buying a used neck off of eBay is NOT buying from Warmoth. I look at eBay all of the time and look for good buys. Most of the decent, slightly used Warmoth necks on eBay sell for about $250. Ones less than that have been removed from guitars and you're stuck with pre-drilled holes for neck and tuner mounting as well as being reamed for tuners I may not want. Today, there are only a couple of Warmoth necks less than $200 and the auctions are still going on. Buy-It-Now prices start at about $250 for necks I wouldn't touch. I'm suspicious of "cheap" Warmoth necks because if they're as great as the sellers claim, why are they not still on the guitar?
