I started this drawing/painting with an acrylic wash, then used charcoal powder and vine charcoal to draw the Cape Buffalo. Finally, I went back in with a brush and acrylic paint for the highlights. I was lucky enough to visit Africa a few years ago and I fell in love with the animals there. The Cape Buffalo is such an amazing animal to draw and paint. Hope you enjoy watching. Leave any questions in the comments. Thanks!!

Watching you work is inspiring. Did you ever use powdered graphite or have you always preferred charcoal?

I just love it! 2 questions, sometimes I see you do an acrylic wash, sometimes charcoal powder. How do you make the decision? Also, are you concerned about breathing in charcoal dust? Because while you use the vine charcoal even I see bits floating..

Whether I use an acrylic wash or not just depends on the look I want for the piece. For black and white I just do charcoal. If I want the tonal color then I'll use the acrylic wash. I do occasionally where a mask and probably should more often. However, on my more recent pieces I've adjusted my process to where I don't lay down as heavy a layer of charcoal powder and that's when most of the particles float off the canvas. So it's not as big a concern as it was previously. Thanks!
