I don't really think you have the capacity to understand, but i'm gonna try anyway. At the time, republicans were always trying to free sleaves legislativly, But the democrats always fought against it, but the voting was close. Each time they tried, republicans came closer and closer to freeing the slaves through legislation. But the democrats had pretty close to equal votes or enough, at least enough to prevent any legislation that would free the slaves from passing. As you probably don't know. The number of representatives a State has is determined by the population of the state. At the time they didn't count black people in the census count. That was the only thing that kept the voting close. But if they counted the black population , then the south would have had so many representatives that there would never have been a chance to pass freedom for the slaves. So, in a compromise the north agreed to counting three fifths Of the black population. Even that made it almost too much to overcome the democrats Votes. You have to realize the democrats really, really wanted their slaves. They did most of the work. Without them the Southern economy would have crashed. Of course, later on the democrats, who are so good at propaganda, try to make the claim that republicans only wanted to count black people as three fifths human. Of course, that was a lie, as democrats always lie and try to twist the truth, because they thrive on false propaganda. So, in other words, the attempts by the North republicans to hold back counting the black population was for the purpose of trying to overcome the democrats to keep them from getting more votes in Congress, because If they did , there'd be no chance of freeing the slaves legislatively. The rest is history , the democrats were willing to go to war to keep their slaves. Eventually, in the mid-sixties, there were finally enough republicans to pass civil rights legislation which the democrats fought for decades. And proof is that if they had ever wanted to pass it. They had super majorities and could have done it anytime they wanted. And it wasn't until there were enough republicans to overcome the super majority , by Joining with the few democrats that were in favor of passing the legislation. President Johnson signed it and his famous for saying that if he did, he would get the black vote for decades.

The real title of the book was 1949, the future. The book was published in 1948. His publisher did not like the title and persuaded Orwell to reverse the year to 1984.

Please everybody read this book. I will buy it for all my (24) grandchildren. Doesn't matter if they are readers or not. We need to make sure that the next generation is engaged!!!!! It is up to us to keep doing the hard work. I'm a daughter of the MLK movement, my mother dragged her 10 children to every movement/rally. I didn't understand at that time, I do now.

Well, cynic that l am...buying the book is a great idea for the author....BUT who says these particular books will not be included in the "BOOK BURNINGS" to come? Start the idea small as in children's books to get us used to that idea. No gross protest, well, let's just include the others we don't like. Then there will be no overt education of facts and ideas 'we' don't like. Has happened throughout history especially since the printing press making written ideas more prolific for the general public. That was a big tactic in Germany during the late 1930's. Does anyone really think honest ideas and books are really openly available in today's Russia? The citizens don't know what has been happening in Ukraine. They think Ukraine invaded and initiated their own invasion! Does that make sense to anyone besides the Russian propaganda experts?
