Sista is a Nollywood drama that is new on Amazon Prime. It is a Biodun Stephen film which was first released in August 2022, but since its premiere on Prime Video, it has created such a buzz in Nigeria, shaking the foundation of the family unit.
Where are our flowers please? We're handing them out to the cast and crew of Sista! The actors were giving! Each role was perfectly embodied, and their emotions, tones, and language was very relatable that most viewers could say “this is how we interact with our parents”, or “that's how we talk”. It really mirrored the typical Nigerian family.
We especially applaud the lead cast, Kehinde Bankole who plays Sista. She showed us so much emotional range in this movie and we're sending her our National Treasure Award. Although She has been in the movie industry for a long time, beginning with Wale Adenuga Productions Superstory series, in this movie, she came to serve! From the way she embodies the role, you will believe she is semi-educated. You will feel every emotion alongside her. In fact, you'll be ready to fight for her!
We also applaud her supporting casts who aced their characters, like Deyemi Okanlawon, Akintoba Adeoluwa, Chiamaka Uzokwe, Chimezie Imo, Adedemola Adewale, Tope Olawoniyan, Bisola Aiyeola, Blessing Nze Obasi, and so on. All we can say is, seeing is believing. Watching the movie would convince you of the phenomenal job they did.
Sista has an uncomplicated story line, and No matter how strong your heart may be, I dare you not to mop a tear or two. Sista shows the story of a single mother, abandoned by her baby-daddy with an 8-month pregnancy, and a 2-year old son at the teenage age of 19. The story is told in a such a delicate manner, the plot is neither over-acted it under-acted; it isn't overly dramatic nor is it subpar, it is just right.
The plot employs flashbacks, alternating between the past younger sista and present older Sistá and Folarin. This is such a fresh viewpoint for storytelling that ensures viewers are kept up to date all through. The number of cast is small but they are the perfect definition of small but mighty! We love that this drama has subtle comedy embedded in it. It doesn't overshadow the movie, you will laugh, and smile while you're feeling the depth of emotions from the characters.
We love that Biodun Stephen weaved so many subplots into the main plot, such as one of irresponsible youth, failed university systems, independent women, the struggles of single motherhood, the pertinence of fatherhood, and a Nigerian youth favourite- emigration as the only way to succeed.
The production, lighting, costuming, makeup, background music, soundtrack, and setting were parfect! In the words of Jenifa. The cinematography in Nollywood movies have greatly improved. The scenes were crisp, and each shot angle was just right!
We also loved that the movie wasn’t star-studded for nothing, even though it had guest appearances from Ronke Oshodi Oke, Chris Iheuwa and Blessing Jessica Obasi. Unlike other nollywood movies who have made it seem like “too many chefs in the kitchen spoils the soup”.
The only issue we have with the movie was that we had expected Fola to actually prostrate or kneel at the reconciliation scene, but Biodun Stephen really wanted to hammer on the fact that the character still had the biggest sized ego, and the proud dude just sat beside her and embraced Sista! Fola, we see your true colours oh!
In all, we give sista a 10/10, and we encourage everyone to see the movie. What a masterpiece!
