Two choices on the ballot paper in 2016 were Remain or Leave. There were no models offered. The vote came back with a majority to Leave. They weren’t interested in deal or no deal. They just wanted to Leave. Femi is just trying to make an argument based on what has happened after the referendum result and during negotiations. It’s a weak argument.

It can hardly prevent any wars abroad when it has little political power. It has promoted peace and cooperation in the Western Balkans since (forcing countries to hand out their alleged war criminals to the ICTY, forcing to accept the returning refugees, leading talks between Kosovo and Serbia, etc.)

femi, we voted to leave. we were taken into a trading agreement (1973) , not a glorified federal state. lets have another vote. how about 1) lets trade with Europe 2) set our own laws 3) we decide who can come to work in the uk . oh sorry thats what we thought we were voting for in 1975 after we were illegally taken into the EEC.

I love watching these videos in 2021 where deliveries take longer, the pound hasn't recovered. Abattoirs and picker farms are understaffed leading to wastage of food. NI has gone up thanks to expenditure for covid which the EU provided it's members support when lockdowns were imposed. Temporary visas for foreigners because loads of us English can't be bothered to work and would rather stay on benefits. More illegal immigration than ever before because we can't cooperate with our neighbours. The list goes on.

I would love to meet Femi and Anna Soubry and Gena Miller, and the rest of them, and shake them by the hand. When the campaign to leave the EU started, although I wanted us to leave, I honesty didn't think there was a hope in hell's chance of us actually succeeding. But then the Remainers came along, and with their lack of self awareness, their arrogance, their condescending elitism, the sheer loathing they demonstrated for the working classes, and anyone else who doesn't agree with them, they made it possible. So thank you remainers and remoaners, thank you for making the exit from the loathsome EU possible, we couldn't have done it without you.

I'd be prepared to argue that democracy has kept the peace rather than the bomb, democratic nations don't go to war with each other, even if they might war with undemocratic ones.. Voting to become democratic again rather than be subsumed by the undemocratic (and by definition thus tyrannical) EU strikes me as a generally good idea, regardless of possible economic consequences.

The war in Bosnia had nothing to do with the EU. The main cause was ethnic tensions as a result of decades of Cold War.

Well, it had something to do with the EU in that there was actually a coordinated effort back then to take in war refugees and to calm down the situation. Which is why the Balkans don't look like the middle east today and the refugees were never forced to march around half of the globe to find something resembling safety. But yes, it wasn't caused by the EU and is certainly not a point against 70 years of peace in middle Europe.

But to claim the EU has prevented war within Europe is hogwash. It stood on the sidelines, inactive while the flames raged for 3 years in the region. Who in their right mind would think the UK, France, Germany etc would take up arms against each other in this day & age. If anything, the EU is fanning the flames of right wing nationalism (which is dangerous) in its attempts to constantly introduce cheap labour into the market & grind out national identity. As Wolfgang Schaeuble said to the Greeks “elections change nothing, there are rules.” I’d rather vote my policy makers, not just hope they agree with me.
