A critical component of the examination is the wearing of loupes (magnification) and a dedicated light source to be able to pick up subtle changes to soft tissue. Also an advocate for adjunctive screening devices that see beneath the surface such as VELscope. These inclusions represent best practices for dental professionals in order to identify abnormal areas within the oral cavity at the best possible stage of discovery. A life may depend on it.

Acid reflux causes the digestive enzyme pepsin to enter the throat and mouth areas. This is also a primary risk factor for developing head and neck cancer.

Very true! On the flip side is the fact that continual clearing of the throat feeling like there is something caught may be a subtle sign of HPV-oropharyngeal cancer situated at the posterior base of the tongue mimicking closely a symptom of GERD or acid reflux. Tricky. Always important to assess the resolution or improvement of the symptoms with Rx meds to rule out a possible unknown tumor.

My dentist never does this and I complain of mouth wounds that won’t heal from biting myself when I eat all he does is shrug. Tells me to go to doctor and my doctor tells me to see the dentist mean while I get charged for dentist and doctor appointments that were useless

I have a sore lump in my gums. I thought it ti be a pus filled lump but its a solid. furthermore the lump does not hurt. it just mildly stings when I touch it. what can it be?
