Just replaced 5 battery modules out of 28 on a 2014 with 221k miles. They were used of unknown mileage. I could tell by the slight swell that 2 were outside modules which tend to stay cooler. I think it was just one module that put the pack over the edge and caused the 'replace hybrid battery' warning.

@@leedsgreece You can probably count on another 60k before doing anything with the battery pack. Check the battery cooling fan intake air screen for debris. Also check all the Brake Caliper slide pins. The brakes get replaced so infrequently that the pins rust up. Check the rear wheel hubs for noise. I replaced one at 95k and the other at 120k, at 235k they are both noisy again.

My grandpa once needed to do some electrical work on an old 90s Taurus, around 2010. I figured he'd fire up his home computer, and do some web surfing. Nope! He goes down to a local hardware store, and buys this manual as big as a phone book specifically for his model of car. He must've figured it out, because his car ran "so much f*ing better". I took a glance through it a while later, and it seemed to have every detail about the car from how to change the plugs and oil, to how to completely remove the engine from the car! Really makes you wonder what home car repair is going to be like once electric cars become more popular.

All high voltage stuff on cars is orange. Don't touch orange wires. You can actually repair a Prius battery on your own, the battery cover is held by special orange clips that can only be opened by the tool on the tip of the battery kill switch. You cannot get inside the battery while the wires are live, because the kill switch is in your hand and therefore not inserted into the battery. The battery is 200V DC which is painful but not fatal with dry hands (and even then you'd need to do something dumb like put the kill switch back in while the high voltage wiring is exposed).

If you can maintain and fix your traditional gas vehicles, then those savings far exceed the gas savings you get from buying a hybrid. But if you always delegate vehicle maintenance to others, then hybrids are a good value. Especially if they get the mpg of a Prius.

Tons of $$ for repairs, hardly no infrastructure to charge them, plus consider this: If you're like millions of us and live in an apartment in a big city like here in Milwaukee, with no garage and you have to park on the street, how are you gonna charge it up at night? Run an extension cord to the street and while you sleep, all the riff raffs, drunks, and dope addicts try to steal themselves an extension cord? Not happening.

But for the most part you get a bulletproof transmission Ecvt in return that alone will never fail just change the fluid at least every 50,000 miles and a pretty durable engine as well and brakes that last almost forever so I mean especially on the new Prius and hybrids that have no more belts and are more electric are dam near bulletproof.

Check the spark plugs, coils, injector for debris and cleaning. If still isn't traced then you will be certain it a minor electrical fix. I believe you should be fine after checking the basic I mentioned, because those older matrix are bullet proof and barely gets severe issues.

We have owned 2 Camry Hybrids. 2007 and 2012 Camry Hybrids. I would buy another hybrid tomorrow. I am considering a RAV4 hybrid to replace my 2012 Corolla S!. I told my sons music teacher and cousin to buy Toyota Hybrids and they all love the cheap gas, maintenance and reliability - just like we do!

The funny thing is some people don't even know the difference between hybrid cars and electric cars. They just hear some rumours about junkyard hybrid cars being bad and they assume all hybrids both straight out the factory and decently maintained used hybrids are horrible. They just classify both hybrid and full electric as electric cars" imagine j neusbaum be talking about electric bills on a hybrid car" Well hybrid cars use engines and heat wave from braking to power the battery and they are better than electric cars. And still if I have an opportunity to chose between hybrid and full gasoline engine cars, I would chose hybrid all day, especially a Toyota/Honda hybrid. If you wanna enjoy a hybrid car battery like forever, make sure your daily routine mostly requires inter city driving, guess that's why most taxi drivers go for hybrids with no complaints in the furthest future.

So, So what ? I owns a awesome Rav4 2017 hybrid 4x4 and it is on road with big distance the most great Car, i ever been owned. And of course you must know what u drive, repair ore maintain. But gloves above 1000 bugs is in my opinion absolutely exaggerated, and the gasoline drive train is even in the contrary very very easy to get acces to it and so very easy to maintain. I never would presently change my asian power ship. Regards Jay

Hybrids and EV are more expensive to maintain. The money you think your are saving in fuel goes into labor and parts. Insurance is higher because parts and repair costs are higher. Then you have to replace the main battery eventually. These vehicles will be treated like BMW, Benz and Audi. Get rid of them before the warranty expires or before you realize too late how much money you've spent on looking cool. Or trying to save the environment.

I don’t agree with that. Hybrid battery last for quite time without question. It reliable but not inexpensive for sure. but Toyota in particular for example don’t over warranty anymore than 10 yrs/150k miles on them. They’re expensive to replace as $3K just for the OEM. That’s a lot to swallow especially when owning or buying a high mileage one. Hybrid makes sense in specific situation such as driving around the city more than constant highway commute beyond the average threshold of 12000 miles spent per year and that’s not all. I owned a used one as a 2nd owner for 4 years. Sold it because it doesn’t make financially sense to keep it beyond 200k miles with anticipated expensive maintenance. Otherwise, great car IF INTEND to keep it forever AND be able to serve it yourself versus the shops. I’m not that guy.
