Hi Jake; nice explanation. Don't forget to check resale and surplus stores because many times EMT conduit shows up. I usually check the local resale places for all kinds of materials. I go in with the mindset...don't look at things for what they are but think about what they could be. Keep up the great work!

Thanks, Aksel! I always forgot to mention that tip. Thanks for the reminder! If you ever see a bunch of conduit that you aren't taking let me know! I might have to sneak over into your territory to grab it. Thanks again!

Great timing, I was just in Menards to see what the conduit selection was, and noticed that the rigid was not only much more expensive, but it's weight was much greater, making it unsuitable for my project. The EMT was quite light and will work well.

Thanks for the comment! Rigid is great for certain things but is usually pretty overkill for most builds. I'm glad that EMT is suitable for your project. Let us know if you have any questions as you work through your ideas!

I purchase my conduit from a local electrical supply store because they are usually about $1 less per stick than Lowe’s.

That's great! I went to our local electrical supply store one day to see if they had it cheaper and they straight up told me to go buy it at Lowes or Home Depot. It's definitely worth checking with them though! Thanks for your comment

The Maker Pipe product and creative user base is hamstrung by the poor availability of EMT conduit in anything but 10 foot lengths of metal tubing. EMT tubing with Maker Pipe connectors can serve a much broader base of users and in a wider range of applications by addressing these constraints. My projects depend on 20 foot sections of aluminum EMT in addition to shorter lengths and common metal EMT. Fiberglass is another EMT material. Retailers sell a single section aluminum ladder that is advertised but not inventoried at the retail price and without shipping fees for an in store pickup on request. A 20 foot section of EMT in common metal or aluminum will require a very high shipping fee from retailers or trade stores. Maker Pipe should offer a user forum and more thoroughly researched guidance on how to obtain EMT in various materials and in longer (20 foot) lengths-both new and used. Help in organizing bulk purchases delivered to various regions by a user forum process and advertising.

Thanks for your comment. You have some interesting ideas and feedback and I appreciate you sharing them! Sourcing and guiding people to longer than 10-foot spans hasn't been something that we've considered very much. Mostly because hardly anyone ever asks for more than 10 foot spans, and also because we recommend that you have vertical supports or bracing every 4 to 5 feet which usually requires a connector that could simultaneously extend the span anyway. I'm more intrigued about the other types of EMT that you mentioned. I've heard about aluminum EMT in some regions but didn't know that fiberglass was an offering. I'm going to look into those some more. Thanks again for your comment and ideas!

Is the id the same between emt and rigid within the same trade/nominal size?

I was unsure so I did some research. Surprisingly it is pretty close for 3/4" and 1". 3/4" RMC has an ID of .836" and it's EMT counterpart has an ID of .824". The ID of 1" RMC is 1.063" and 1" EMT is 1.049".
