Here is where the passport shines... when you get home and are going through customs, the birth certificate lines are always twice as long as passport lines.

@High Voltage I guess it depends on the port and how quickly you get off the boat. We do carry off and everytime the line for BC is twice as long as passport.

So much less of a hassle to travel with your passport. I think I would only travel with a birth certificate if I had no other choice, but sometimes people don't have a choice. Great video, very informative!

You're right. Sometimes people don't have a choice. We save and budget for a long time to be able to afford a cruise. Passports for our family of 5 would cost almost $600. We are always very careful with birth certificates and IDs and so far haven't had any trouble.

Tony, I am so glad you brought this up! My friend and her husband tried to sail with a birth certificate and her last name did not match her I.D. She was not allowed to get onto the ship!! Thank goodness the port was in their hometown, so they were able to run home, grab the marriage license, and cruise on!! I have never used anything other than my passport for all of my travel. No headaches and no worries!!!

I used to travel every time with just a birth certificate, but with everything that's going on now, next time I cruise I will have a passport! Better safe than sorry 😊

For our honeymoon 25 years ago, I travelled under my maiden name. Our travel agent suggested this because we didn’t have time to get my drivers license changed before we sailed. So the original booking name and all of my documents matched. It made things so easy. My lovely husband was not offended that I didn’t use his last name for one more week. ❤

As a foreigner I don’t understand why, if you are leaving your country, you wouldn’t have a passport. That’s just unheard of everywhere else in the world. The only valid form of documentation that’s accepted everywhere in the world is a passport. The fact that you can take a cruise from the US only having a birth certificate doesn’t mean you should do it!

Laura MiPe passports are expensive and have to be renewed every 10 years. If I can travel without one I will. I’m cheap!

@@ninagalvani1007 I get what your saying. But think of it this way. If you need to bring 3 to 4 different documents with and you don't have them, the cost to replace them isn't much cheaper than it is to just buy a passport.

James Foskey It’s exactly $2 for an official copy of a birth certificate (in my state). I don’t know about the other documents, but those things are generally less expensive than people think. It’s the less hassle (and hassle of potentially replacing lost documents) that makes a passport worth it, but like I said, I’m cheap (and careful too) so it’s worth it for me. If I had the money, I’d get a passport though. It’s nice that this option still exists so I might as well take advantage.

I love the close loop cruse and using a EDL no need to get passport . It’s holds the same wight as passport card

Very informative video, Tony. It's ALWAYS better to have a piece of documentation and not need it then need it and not have it. Just because you've never been asked for something before or because 20 people online say they've never needed it doesn't mean you won't. Especially documents connecting name changes and relationships to children you have with you. It's never a problem until it's a problem like Tony said. It's also smart especially for married couples who have different last names to carry their marriage certificate when they travel.

Great information about the children of divorced people. I got an email atraight from Norwegian stating they noticed I was a single parent bringing 3 children and sent me the form to have signed. I never was told that by my travel agent and have never heard any other you tuber mention it! Great job!

Tony remember that as of October 2020 you need a real Id or enhanced driver license to get on an airplane. So it is easier to get a passport

That means your drivers license needs to have a golden star on it which represents further approval by the government matching you with certificates and all that good stuff. I believe that some time in the near future you will have to have a DL with the gold star Airport TSA regs

I did not even think about the marriage license. I am cruising for the first time have my birth certificate and now thanks to your video I have my marriage certificate with those two things together. Next time I cruise there will be a passport thanks again very informative video

I've cruise 6 times, just me and my kids, and have never been asked by Carnival to provide a letter of consent. If they asked, I'd probably just claim widower status

Raising my child alone, prior to getting her a passport, I always carried a small binder containing my parenting plan (court order granting me full custody), a certified copy of the child’s birth certificate, immunization record, and several photos of the two of us together taken over the years.

hey, i know you posted this 4 years ago lol. but i was just wondering if you ever actually had to provide any of that documentation to get a child on the cruise? my travel agent said its fine, dont worry about it, they likely wont care to ask for anything. But everyone says i need a notarized permission slip for the other parent.

We went on our honeymoon 3 months after we got married. I ran around the weekend after the wedding and got everything together to get my name changed ID SOCIAL SECURITY CARD that way it would come back quickly, so we could go apply for passports. Our passports came in 14 days before we left for our cruise. I purposely switched everything over before getting my passport so it would be less hassle and names would match. Sure enough , everything went perfect. Well with the paperwork anyway 🤷🤔

On our cruise last year we had to have a notarized letter from both parents for our granddaughter to sail with us. Having that and her birth certificate, she was good to go. She was nine at the time.

Great video! We decided not to get a passport for out next cruise and I made sure to research for hours and call carnival 3 or 4 different time just to make sure we had everything together. Since I'm married I'm taking bc, marriage certificate and license. I will definitely have a pass port next year!

My first cruise required just a birth certificate but due to a name change would also have to carry court documents. Getting a passport took care of all that and made life much easier. Once passport was in hand watch out world. Cruise #24 booked .

Everyone should have a passport. They really don't cost that much and if you ever plan on leaving the country, even if it's Canada or Mexico, you should ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS have your passport with you because if something happens it makes life a LOT easier. Also, just because someone else or even you didn't have any issues before doesn't mean it won't happen or the cruise line won't start strictly enforcing the rule. It's better just to spend $145 for the passport than risk losing thousands because they won't let you on the ship.

Hey Tony .. I have cruised with my birth certificate on 5 cruises with Carnival and my last name changed ( due to marriage ) , so the name on DL and birth certificate was different and I never had an issue. I cruise on the Carnival Horizon next month and I’ll be using my new passport 👍

Nina Hardnett my wife never had a problem neither. We didn’t have marriage certificate first cruise second cruise we brought it but they never asked for it. Guess we hot lucky

@@richandrews6273 Same here, my birth certificate and license do not match due to having been married and name changed. I have since gotten divorced and kept my married last name. I have done 3 cruises on Norwegian and noone has ever even asked about it.

I got my son a passport for our first cruise. If he required serious medical care, I wanted to make sure he could be flown out of whatever country we were visiting back to U.S. to receive it.

Cunard actually requires a passport no matter what regardless if it's a closed-loop cruise from a US port. Also, that closed-loop cruise rule ony applies if you are returning to your home port via the cruise ship. If you have to be care flown off the ship you will have to have a passport regardless if you return to your home port.

Married women don't need their marriage license if traveling with a birth certificate. I work for DCL and that part of your video is not correct. When we get married, we have to go to the Social Security office to change our name. We provide the marriage license proving the name change. The drivers license office won't change your name unless SS has changed it first. I just got off the Disney Magic and only needed my birth certificate and driver's license and there was zero problems with my birth certificate having my maiden name and my DL having my married name. We do recommend passports because you are leaving the US but they are not required.

This happened to me on our first cruise. I was questioned that my middle name was not on my original birth certificate and I had my middle name & married last names on ID. The customs official told me "get a passport".

I brought other peoples kids on Carnival multiple times. Never once needed a letter of consent. I'm also a divorced father took my kids on 8 Carnival Cruises. Never once needed a letter of consent.

I believe this has changed in recent years. My travel agent informed me that now it's only US territories in the Caribbean (i.e. US Virgin Islands, Guam, etc.)

Here is another good reason for sailing with a passport, if something happens onboard the ship, you are forced to disembark and you are in a foreign country, if you don't have a passport you are stuck. Every cruise line that I have spoken with strongly encourages their passengers to have a passport. In my opinion, it is less expensive to have one and both your driver's license, and birth certificate are housed in this document. When, I get ready to book my Alaskan Vacation, I will definitely have passport in hand for my cruise.

Again you have to know where you are cruising to in order to know what is required. Not all closed loop cruises are BC and ID.

Not to mention possibly missing the ship in a foreign port and needing to catch a plane. Passports are cheap. I THINK it's only about $100? (and they're good for 10 years). Good video Tony.

You don't have to miss it : what if the ship has to take a detour and visits a place where a passport is required instead ? You can stay on board, no sightseeing.

I worked for the National Passport Agency and we always told people taking closed loop cruises to check with the cruise line. Even if WHTI says you just need a birth certificate and valid ID, the cruise line can make you bring a passport anyway. Sometimes it can take a while to get a passport especially if you live in certain states like Texas. They have weird BC's and the government won't accept them. And, you can use a passport card if you are not flying out of the country. Book if you are.

K C Texas BC’s for our family of 5....absolutely no problem initially getting or renewing passports. Had them in hand 14 days after submitting papers and did not have them expedited🤷🏻‍♀️

@@tonia.5861 I'm sorry. Not all of Texas gave out that particular type of BC. I wish I could remember what is was called. But believe me, you don't want to be on the other end of the phone with the person who is leaving in 2 days and their passport is still "In Process." LOL.

last year i used my birth certificate and was scared, i have had problems in the past with it. it is not a normal birth certificate, it is a US Consulate certificate (i was born in Germany when my father was stationed overseas), it is on the approved list, and i had no issues on my trip

Thanks for the info. I’m leaving on MSC Meraviglia in 31 days with my boyfriend whom does not have a passport yet. I have one but I always check with the cruise line before we book. Hopefully he’ll have a passport soon because the thought of anything going wrong during vacation is nerve wrecking

And you have been lucky. I have seen customs stop people that have an ID that doesn't match and they were taken to another room, I'll assume for further questioning. I would guess that they got through OK, but why take the risk. The rules are posted in many places on government web sites. There is no need to take an unnecessary risk when you can just follow the rules. I've also been through customs where they didn't seem to care about much of anything.

My mother and I leave for Galveston and board Carnival on April 16th. My mother's Identification card is expired, and she barely renewed it but has a paper copy with a picture and a certified copy of her birth certificate, and her marriage license showing her last name change. Will the temporary ID work?

Keep intending to get our passports and just keep putting it off for some reason or another. I always bring my marriage cert also..never know. I know i know..just go get you passport. I work all the time and just have never fit it into my schedule. Maybe thats because im allowed to travel without.

Before getting my passport, I always used my birth certificate and driver's license. Luckily, before my first cruise, I had a great cruise agent who, upon seeing my certificate, told me it would not be valid because it was missing one word. I paid about $7 for an "official" one.

@@abbyeve23 Looking at them both... it looks like the word was "transcript". The original one (which was legal until some 20 years ago) was worded "Certificate of birth registration" while the newer one says "Certified transcript of birth".

I travel with a passport because I travel more frequently. My husband however, his first cruise we did with the birth certificate and state ID. Worked fine for him because we were just going to Bermuda. But he's getting a passport before any future cruising. Because you might be able to go TO a country with just your birth certificate, good luck getting OUT of the country with just the birth certificate. Just get the passport. Not to mention identity theft is WAY easier if someone has your birth certificate than if they have your passport.

Hi, so on the boarding pass, I have my kids middle name first then their first name second. But on their birth certificate and drivers license, they first name is first then middle name, will this be a problem when boarding the ship? Thank you

Cruising with a birth certificate is a bad, bad idea. Anything can happen and you could be stuck. An injury or illness where you need to debark and fly home, an emergency at home or if the ship becomes disabled. A number of years ago a RCCL ship ran aground in the DR and everyone with passports were flown home at company expense. Everyone without was stuck until they could get emergency passports. A very expensive deal when it comes to paperwork, meals, lodging, airfare.

NOT HAVING PASSPORTS is why the “poop cruise” with Carnival happened in the first place! They had to tow it back to the US rather than the closest port. It would have made a whole lot more since for cruise lines to start phasing in the requirement for a passport then🤔

If it's a closed loop cruise like Mr. Tony explained in the beginning....yes. I cruised last year out of Miami on RCCL, my kids were 12, 12, 8. Only needed birth certificates, but I also had on hand my marriage license, and the kids have military ID cards. We just got all their passports renewed last month, so ready for our Alaska cruise in May.

In Europe we just get passports and dont think anything about it. Is it that the USA is so huge people just dont consider it a priority? From what I understand it isn't a problem for many cruises to the Caribbean as long as nothing goes wrong. Once you have to get on airplane back from a port that becomes an issue. I may have it wrong but in my mind just get a passport.

Thank the cruise industry for lobbying for this exception; passport much easier for embark/debark too with ports utilizing facial recognition. If you can wait until your child is 16 you get a 10 year vs a five year passport...

My son has been on 8 cruises using just a birth certificate with no problems. They ask him his name or birthday (he is 5) and watch how he acts with us but that is the extent of it at customs. I think passports are only good for 5 years for kids and we are waiting for a Caribbean cruise before we spend the money for a passport for him.

I think carnival has a mistake on their website. It states closed loop is from a us state to a us state. Definitely doesn’t say it needs to be the same state. My sister in law is going on a carnival cruise starts in Tampa and ends in nyc. Guess there is a big discussion on a Facebook page for her cruise. She’s not too worried for she and my brother have their passports. I just hope there isn’t any problems for any of her ship mates. My wife and I just applied for our passports figured we don’t want to press our luck anymore. Our first 2 closed loops cruises we just brought our birth certificate. Next one we will have no worries. We’ll have both passports and insurance. Thank you Tony.

Carnival is not making a mistake it is state to state. You leave from a state u have to return to that same state.

What if you lost your Id a week before cruise but you have the previous enhanced ID and your birth certificate and the Receipt for new ID .? Your new id Take Ten days it might arrive before your plane date.

DJ Cruiser this is just my opinion. To get a real id you need your birth certificate if you have a non real Id and your birth certificate don’t you really have a real id? That said it doesn’t cost any extra to get a real id so it’s probably a good idea to get one of those

Thank you! I sent off for my passport but a mistake I made was not doing the math . My passport may not be here before my cruise! ( First time cruiser) I'm gathering BC, etc just in case. I've included my first marriage license and divorce papers and my second marriage license and divorce papers. So I have a paper trail from the time of my birth ....LOLOL Thank you for this info as I NEVER thought to have those papers!

Tony, they don’t have to match. My birth certificate hasn’t matched my driver’s license for ANY of my 11 cruises.

That information on returning to the same port is wrong! I've been on several cruises now from Puerto Rico to Galveston I've been on ones from Ft. Lauderdale to Galveston as well sooooo?

I am going on carnival. Can I use my birth certificate wallet sized card? It has a seal on it.

3 cruise we use a birth certificate but now we use a passport. Plus my birth certificate is in my maiden name not married name

In Florida a letter of consent isnt needed. My fiancee brings her son with us on cruises and all we have ever needed was his birth certificate and nothing from his father.

The State of Florida actually has nothing to do with it. It would be Customs and Border Patrol or the cruise line that could ask for it. It's always better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it that's for sure.

Danger of traveling with a birth certificate is if you are in a foreign country and need to fly home for some reason. It's a bit tricky and will cost you a little more money

We got passport for all of us because we feel safer having a passport just in case somebody gets sick or hurt we can still get back to the United States.

If you miss your cruise and get left behind... then you need to fly back to the US with a passport. If there is an emergency and you need to fly back... you need a passport. Better to have one because you cannot enter the US by air without a passport.

What happens in a remarriage I have to get a copy of my first marriage where my maiden name. First changed??? Who keeps that! What if you have been divorced 4 times you have to keep your old marriage licenses!?
