Same... Did how ever start with a trash 2-3 channel planes that only had motors or rudder and tail that would bank so hard only way out was to crash... Then first real plane was a wildcat (still have it funny enough but needs a new motor... Wonder why) then bought a real radio. Aka spektrum dx6 second gen and boy was that a mistake. Losing signal at 200 meters is no fun... So now im ganging up with the other erls peeps. But before I found erls i got into drones with frsky that turned out to be just as bad as the spectrum. And ofcourse my whoop i bought it with frsky and found out erls was the future 3 days later.... Fml. We live we learn right? Glad to say im finally on the other side today and in the known and do my best to pass down my knowledge for the next gen pilots so they don't need to toss out money.

1st and second plane were warbirds. Haha. Then I got a piper. My 1st flight about 5 mins in I'm having fun watching it and I do a loop then roll and recover , I had to land as I was shook with the realization, yes I should have bought an overwing trainer 1st. It would have been sooo much cheaper and smarter. I've only upgraded transmitters 4 times.

My favorite moment in flying rc was when I brought an airplane I had built out of a posterboard with a motor that was way more powerful than it needed to be. It flew really nicely until I tried to do a full speed pass and the thing was ripped apart right in front of me and my friend. It was absolutely hilarious and I laugh every time I look at the video

Yes, AeroScout! I'm an AMA intro instructor and start new students on my AeroScout with a buddy box, of course. When they're ready to solo, I insist they get their own AeroScout, even if they are not excited about it. The only student I've had drop out of RC altogether was one who bought several planes that were beyond his ability - and crashed every single one of them! But I should mention, he backed over one with his truck. Life is like that.

For a newbie I say spend just enough time on the sim to get the hang of which directions to move the sticks, and then put it away. Go fly a good trainer plane for a season or two, then move onto something a bit more sporty. Once you’re not crashing regularly, and learning aerobatics, get the sim back out again just to practice your maneuvers and learn how to bail out of them when you fail. Then ditch the sim again.

#9 Having telemetry for battery voltage makes a lot of sense in my book. I don't have callouts for voltage though, I just have my radio set up to call out low battery when the voltage drops below a certain amount so I know when it is time to land. I run FrSky radio gear, so pretty much all of the receivers support telemetry out of the box anyway

There's inevitably going to be someone like me who only wants to fly jets. If you're allergic to prop planes, start with the small Freewing 64mm jets because you will crash repeatedly in the beginning and those are the only planes that I found have a chance of surviving.

Loved this video, some very good advice. I remember a financial adviser saying, " Buy the cheapest car your ego can live with " I've only just started to dabble with rc planes. I did try a drone a couple of years back, but that is still in the lake near my house. No hobby is cheap. I was stunned to discover the cost of model railroading. So I kept out. Best wishes from Western Australia.

When I was teaching students to fly at our local airport I always told them the 3 ate's 1. Aviate (fly the plane FIRST) 2. Navigate (ALWAYS KNOW WHERE YOU ARE AT) 3. Communicate (After you have control of the aircraft and know where you are at then the last thing is use the radios and talk with tower) and lastly ALTITUDE IS INSURANCE when practicing maneuvers at the practice area doing departure stalls or stalls in general always do them with enough altitude for safe recoveries
@TailHeavyProductions

For sure! It’s a bit different for RC. Just fly the plane until it’s crashed if it goes that far. Not really much navigating or communicating to do.

Also regarding chargers, don't just look at how many cells it can take, and the current it can output. You have to look at the watts. Many chargers quote a high voltage, and a high current, and they're not exactly lying because they CAN do either of those things. But they are limited in watts, and cannot get anywhere near doing both those things at the same time.

I bought two of those little warbirds that are rtf and to be honest with you, they aren’t that bad. They are cheap and come with a very easy gyro. Although they basically fly themselves, they are a good way to get into the hobby and learn. I’ve crashed my p51 from volantex and it’s still flying with the help of super-glue.

Hey now ! A DX6e is just fine for floating a foamy around a park within a 100 meter radius. Does close-in 4 channel just fine. However... do toss the 4 AA batteries and get the optional LiPo or whatever batteries. Those AA's go south rather quickly. I've been using the 620 receiver with no issues. Am about to hodge-podge a ZOHD stabilizer into that receiver for elevons on a plane I built. BTW, that ZOHD 250g plane is a total hoot. Loving it. The DX6e works fine with that plane, though there was substantial tweaking done. Those 3 little pots are a trip to adjust. LOL. And everything had to be turned way down setting the transmitter channels. That little 250g is VERY responsive.

Amazingly true video once again. Yeah my first plane flew an amazing 5 seconds, straight into the ground. And ofcourse the radio and electronics that came with that overpriced Sesna look-alike where also pretty darn useless. But flying on an extreme budget i've had many hours aloft with a cheap-ish Multiplex and a really cheap Hobbyking radio. Both still work great 15 years later. (Did have to remake the front part of the plane tho, but everything needs a crumple zone eventually. (motor is in the middle). Love the hobby! It's great and most of the people too!

Telemetry is nice. Battery status can be important, and deserves some kind of warning. Also, vario for thermaling is worth the beep pollution. I miss the stress on the adrenaline from flying something you actually built rather than assembled. Buy the right stuff up front is good advice. Lots of right stuff is available used from pilots treating themselves to top shelf stuff. Thank you for great videos!

I'm an accomplished 3D heli pilot. I thought I would jump right into 3D planes with no issues, but boy was I wrong, it's harder to learn 3D plane flight because you can't hover yourself out of a situation. You just crash, and the way out is the ground lol. After 2 weeks on the SIM, i can finally do rolling circles but it was after advice from pro piiots. A SIM is a great tool to practice. For a beginner, a SIM is a great way to build up bad habits. Always learn from a teacher if you want to excel quicker and not pick up bad habits you then have to unlearn.

02:30 long long ago i bought an fs-i6x so i could try out a simulator. (clearview) because i got a plane. (didn't get into the hobby then because transport was difficult and only had 1 battery) recently i bought an xk k124 heli wich comes with an xk x6 (the knockoff version of that dx9 i am guessing) and ordered an RTF f09-s. both of wich i will be using the rtf transmitter for rather then the fs-16x it's fully computerised aswel. comes with dual rates and expo. throttle curves. pitch curves. channel reversals.. the basics. it's deffinatly a step down from the fs-i6x wich has ALOT more i can tweak. but it's not a bad radio at all. it's ball raised (the sticks are on dual ball bearings). you adjustable tension on the spring plates. adjustable tension on the friction plates. it's genually not bad. but seeing as i have the fs-i6x wich is a cheap 50 dollar radio. i don't see myself ever buying a dx9. and i genually hate the thrustmaster tx16s because (even though i am sure you can turn it off) i get annoyed by a controller telling me what to do (the voice. narrating every switch flip and telling you "you should think about landing") the f09-x is a whole other story. it has all the gps features that the heli comes with so i can't use the fs-i6x otherwise the gps simply won't function. (gets disabled by the on board computer in the helicopter) but it's also fully computerised.
