I’m American . Have the prices for goods, groceries, restaurants went up since the country devalued their currency. It’s very confusing

I understand why you find it confusing. I left January 30th and since the new president took office I saw prices go up slightly in regards to USD value. In ARS value prices shot up tremendously. If you’re thinking about moving to Argentina I recommend waiting to see how prices look over the next year since right now it’s too soon since the new president too place to really know how much prices will change

The thing with Argentina is that there were never segregation laws there, so ever since the independence of Argentina when slavery was outlawed, the former slaves and their descendants completely integrated into the local public life, they didn’t disappear or weren’t killed like many foreigners claim… they simply mixed with everyone else (indigenous people, European immigrants, Asian immigrants, and criollos (people that were born in the colonial era). Interracial marriage has never been an issue. And in the first place, the slave population was rather small compared to other countries in the americas, and after the massive influx of immigrants in the late 19th century, you could say the African phenotypes dissipated. So as you said, there’s still some African ancestry inside of many Argentinians, but it has been mixed over and over again throughout the generations, people are mixed but not in the same way as biracial people in the States, maybe you have African ancestry from 3 of your grandparents, but your “pure” African ancestors date to the colonial or early history of the country. As a matter of fact, the very first Argentinian president was an Afro-Argentinian, he was a mulato (which back then meant that a person was biracial, white and black), and less than a hundred years later we had another Afro-Argentinian president. And in our highest denomination bill we have the portrait of an Afro Argentinian woman regarded as the mother of the fatherland die to her participation in the liberation armies. So African people are a big part of our history as you can see, it just not common to see locals with such strong black features, people who look like you are usually automatically assumed to be foreigners, and since most African migrants in Argentina are men, it’s even less common to see black women. The black women that are often seen in Buenos Aires are usually mixed Brazilians or Venezuelans, so they tend to be lighter too. It’s also becoming more common to find Argentinian parents who adopted Haitian children, so I imagine in the coming years as these kids grow up we will become more familiar as a society to see black locals. Anyway, I’m glad you had an overall positive experience, there’s plenty of room to improve, that’s clear, but we strive to becoming a better country not only for us but for whoever wishes to live among us.
