Want to grow your own food, want to raise aquaponic rainbow trout??? Tired of all the press Tilapia get? This is a multi part series where we will be going over each part of our off-grid, sustainable food and energy production project that we call Hab 1. In this video we will go over rainbow trout in our aquaponics system; why we chose them, and how they are doing.

I really like the way you designed all this out. I'm from a northern state. Digging the tanks into the ground seems like an ideal solution.

This has been a great series, Jeff! It is almost like you are hitting the reset. You busted butt to this point, now you are up and running. Step back, take a deep breath and redefine the mission. It is good you got the exposure through Wranglerstar and now you are answering who and what you are to the new viewers. Your series has been clear and concise. You are off to an explosive start, man! This year is going to rock for you, the work is going to start paying off, I can feel it. I can't wait.

It’s not fish poop that fertilizes the plants. It’s the ammonia waste that is secreted by their gills that nourishes the plants.

Your video ended with out discussing what plants you can grow in cold water for eating. I co-chair the Trout-in-the-classroom in MD. I have been looking for plants to use if we add aquaponics to our TIC program. TomG2

Do you have a video on fish math? As in how long they take to grow to harvesting weight, so I can calculate how big my system needs to be?

I have some experience with aquaponics. Joined you channel after your appearance on WS. I noticed you wanted to address the solid waste issue in the fish tanks. I found by having the pump input set just above the bottom of the tank it picks up most of it and if you want to remove it you can use a small pile of cheese cloth where the pump dumps in the grow bed or just let the red wigglers at it. Also you talked about waiting until the grow bed water as high before switching the valve to another bed. It would probably be better to wait until the bell syphon kicks in before stitching soaking the roots is not a good idea a lot of plants need oxygen for the roots and your media should hold plenty of water between cycles. Your doing great.

I worked in a pet shop years ago. The cold water fish had less death in there due to colder water, the tropical fish had more disease and death due to warmer water.

Another possible very good fertilizer is seaweed! Or other water plants, perhaps like canadian pondweed. From experience, that stuff grows like hell! It's also good for oxygenation of the water. Vegetarian fish like grass carp, love it! .

Loving the slick new style, on your speaking scenes, you should have panned out/up a bit so you could get your whole head into frame. It makes for a better picture/cinematographic effect. Anyway, keep up the good work, I'm super impressed with how far you've come in a years time.

Why would someone use the rocks)balls over the free floating rafts? It's a more expensive setup, it's not uncommon to get anerobic bacteria which then requires full clean out and on all the videos the beds are either empty or plantings are not only small but sparse. So what is the benefit?

Tanks in the ground is an obvious benefit, but how large can you go? I'm in Scotland and considering what fish to use. We have a sloping site so it lends itself to stepped tanks. Trout seem better suited here. Thank you for your inspiration.

great setup! We started tilapia but quickly switched to rainbow trout for the very reasons you outline at the beginning. propane for our commercial greenhouse is waaay more manageable keeping things at a lower temp in the winter. plus the lettuces that we grow like the cooler temps better anyway. Check us out if you have some time!

Cool setup and I want to watch more of your videos to check it all out. But this video is completely misleading based on the title. There is no information in this about rainbow trout in aquaponics except for the fact that you used them because you are in a cool climate - something anyone thinking about rainbow trout would already be aware of.

Hello I've just found your channel. It's very interesting. However I do have a question. You use trout, because of the cold weather ... We alsof have cold winter days - but at the same time - during these cold days - there won't be any crop, what wants to grow. How do you use a system with minimum sunhours and warmth? For the plan I have in mind I think the system would freeze up and I was wondering if there is a chance that the trout pollute themselfs...???

Depending on just how cold your local environment is you might be able to use poly tunnels to prevent freezing and grow cold tolerant lettuce verities to remove nitrates.

I'm sure you'll have a fish tracker in a few years. They ingest a unique id tag and then you can track their lifecycle. That would be pretty neat.

There is a potential big problem your system because of raw poop and pee going into hydro system. See John Kohlers channel "grow organic vegetables" video posted a year ago "vertical aquaponics systems". The company discovered raw poop is not good and solved it by adding earthworms to grow beds platforms.

Hopefully about anywhere you live this system would be supplemental to what you can get from the outside, but when you are starving food is food. This would provide more nutrients per pound than most other relief efforts.

You still have to feed the fish, and it's important that you feed them healthful, nutrient dense food, otherwise they are just as bad for you as other foods. Studies have shown where farm raised tilapia are worse for you than bacon. (At least for your mental health, based off improper balances of omega fatty acid)

Indeed. Most substances, medications are metabolised in some way otherwise they would have no effect on the body. Eg, drink alcohol you don't wee alcohol...

Why would NASA send fish to Mars? You don't need fish for microbes, and you can grow plants in sterile conditions. I would have thought that NASA would put all Astronauts on a vegan diet for a trip to Mars to reduce complexity of the system and to keep energy demands down. Also, you state that you don't want to be transporting fertilizer, but you are asking for fish food to be transported, which is essentially the fertilizer but with a whole host of organic carbon that the plants do not need.
