I get asked all the time to design dome houses, so I'm going to do a series on efficient housing and in particular the benefits of domes. I'm starting with a what not to do video first so we can see some of the issues and challenges of the dome home!
Vist www.geo-dome.co.uk for more info about building geodesic domes.

Thank you. I'm in the market for a dome home and I've ran into this design quite a number of times. Although intriguing, this hybrid design never made much sense to me and your explanation certainly made me feel justified in my doubts. My dream dome home is one that is energy efficient, low maintenance and bomb proof - much more research to do. Thanks again for sharing.

Thanks Paul, looking forward to you putting your experience into this, like many people I am planning to chuck all my money and years of my life into a similar project, but mine will have fewer sticking out bits. Part of the reason for maintaining a more complete dome is I thought of building a curved ladder on wheels that is pivoted on a central pole support in the middle so that any part can be accessed during construction. I see some dodgy ladder leaning on other youtube vids!

I can't wait! I'm currently about to leave the whole idea of using a dome as my future home because of various reasons including those you mention here. You Sir have been my main source of inspiration and learning and I really can't wait to hear what you have to say about how to solve all these issues. Btw I think the reason for the open top could be to keep the place cooler in the summer. I've also seen images showing how the air flow in a dome helps in that regard, which I believe would be affected by interior walls and the such.

Im thinking about building a dome home w hempcrete, but not fuller. With a solid structure. Thinking about copula on top, unfortunately must agree with you but what is the solution to it and most of your points? Can't wait for the next one showich how to. I plan to build about 11m dia in PL. Because I want a passive standard so the thickness of walls must be 400mm and when I've asked an architect about the insulated floor and a cellar. He stopped writing to me. YOu know, the insulation must be universally same thickness all round and bottom. I plan to use a low deensity mix as used to ceilings, and use it all rond, so will be light and worm. Need chimney, skylight, and enough windows. Two storey to use space available. Have not sorted out the roof cover so the rain water be drinkable. Therefore no bitumen be used. I love to design myself and give to an architect to check. Use sketchup. But try to avoid chemicals like glues and foams, an also metal bridges like nails or bolts across the wall. I'd rather use a dowels. Have not figured out a non toxic timber glue. Waiting for the continuation, thanks.

Thank you very much for this video. Now then... Let's move forward to forms to create a dome with "hempcrete" panels to make a dome? I've researched and I find this an interesting idea using your basic thought garnered from your extensive research into wood struts, and the Wanger Flange. I scaled it down to just under 12 ft but I want to build more than one and join them together by a enclosed walkway. I prefer the style and materials in the way designed originally by Buckminster Fuller. It's arguably better than a box home in every way and far more secure and long lasting. The Dymaxion home style. They also only way 3000 lbs vs 400,000 for a typical 2000 sq ft home. The efficient, strong circular design uses less materials making them weigh even less than a mobile home while being stronger than a brick house. I'll be looking to build a dymaxion type home here soon. Beautiful stuff.

As the geomagnetic field around our planet continues to weaken, the possibility of an moderate EMP taking down the power grid grows. Considering this, the logical way to have a backup heating system for a home would be the traditional fireplace and chimney. So my question to you is, should someone have a traditional fireplace and chimney in a dome home, how and where would it best be positioned?

Cupola is a goof thing as it stops moisture getting into the construction (because of flat surface). Check New age domes, they build in a hurricane areas, so I think they know that they do.
@TheRebelmanone
@TheRebelmanone 2 жыл бұрын
If they indeed used real traditional house building concepts with it then it is fine. As long as they like it, because it is ok mechanically. I know you said it is weakened because it is only in essence 1/2 a dome, but if they used traditional building methods on those additions then the openings they took out of the dome are reinforced with headers, kings, and jacks. In other words the dome would be weak as hell with all those openings, but not if they put huge headers, kings, and jacks studs, like any traditional building has. Put it this way, it is not going to be caving in anytime soon. As far as the rest of the dome knows mechanically, it has no openings because they are reinforced as if the dome was never opened. But i wouldn't be building anything traditional in a hurricane belt. Actually i recommend not building anything in a hurricane prone area, but they still do it. But totally agree on those shingles, no matter what they are wrong for a dome. Fiberglass reinforcement will waterproof it, it will be a smooth shinny surface instead of asphalt. i recommend 2 part epoxy for the resin. If you wanted to, you can make the surface as smooth and as shinny as a modern car, any color you choose too, at the same time reinforce the dome even stronger, and waterproof the entire dome, with its fiberglass mesh and cloth embedded in the epoxy with a top coat of quality marine paint or even car paint. But you do know we love you right, you are awesome with us, and correct as always. I was only saying if they use real engineering thinking, they can make the openings and still have a strong dome. To be honest, like you just said, if the dome was build in full without the openings, and engineered correctly(size of beams, etc...) it will be stronger than any other type of dome with openings, headers, king, and jacks or not. But it is overkill to be afraid to make openings in most situations, unless your dome is over the entire city.

The above dome sample shows all the disadvantages of the dome houses. It should be at least at 4th Frequency for this size 5/8 part of the sphere and with small riser. Then all the disadvantages shown in the video above will disapeared. And if you really want to feel the advantages of the dome house, do not make it so big. Better do couple of domes in a size of 6-7 mtrs in diameter and connect them. This is the right dome, :)

We built a shot Crete dome in Florida 30 yrs ago. The first company we used did not follow the instructions to apply think coats to the bottom section and let dry some before adding more and continuing to the top and they collapsed the structure. We had to tear it down to the slab and start again. My husband trialed the mud after that. It turned out great and insulation from polystyrene of 9” thick was amazing the fire place heated the complete 30’ diameter dome with extensions and second floor.
