In this video I go into some details about the pros and the cons of owning an old Toyota Hilux, I wanted to make the kind of video I wished I had watched before I bought mine, so that I knew what I was in for.

I've used my 1997 ln106 for 23yrs everyday . Parts are cheap and easy to fit . It's had a hard work life but I service it every 5000kms. Has never broken down.

I have a 1996 LN106.. Yes, you have to change a lot of things because these pickups are nearly 30 years old. I already replaced the starter, alternator, ps pump, steering box.. I'm still fixing things, but I still love my Hilux.

Awesome review! I love these trucks and if you keep up with maintenance they’re amazing trucks. Also in New Zealand parts are pretty cheap as there’s quite a few considering how old they are now

Agree with all you said. Have a 96 version. Also recently replaced front calipers, made a big difference. No steering box, however replaced the pitman arm. I've owned it since new and love it. Son had 31in tyres on it, I went back down a size when I got it back. Made a huge difference going up hills and braking.

Hey Liam, good update review of your reviews. I have a LN167R, exactly as you have said I have done and replaced similar components. With all things said and done, agree with you, they are reliable and good to drive. I turbo'd mine 5LE at 390000ks. Used the stock CT20 toyota spec turbo, have done 26000ks on it, runs good, I don't have hill issues but don't push it, running Max 8psi in turbo and egts 350c to 400c Max. Treat them well don't push them and very reliable and economical 10k per litre which is good for these ole lux's.. Have enjoyed watching 👀 your vids over last couple of years. Cheers from Far North Queensland. 👍🏻

Cheers @trevorspary134 missing North Queensland right now while I'm down here in the big smoke of Brisbane, especially missing the tropical rainforests and waterholes. But coming back in a week for a holiday so I might post a video of my travels if I have the energy.

Love this review; we own a 1996 LN105 double cab; slow as molasses, hates hills. Starter motor needed a revamp...but so worth the time and money as it represents all that a simple, no frills 44 should be. Totally love this old bus, thinking about getting a single cab and putting a few mods on it. Just for the fun of owning and driving...there's something so naive and pure about these old trucks. And yes, they look the mutt's nuts. Thanks for making and uploading your content.

Which country are you in? I have an LN106 in Canada 🇨🇦 I imported from Japan. I really like the simplicity of it. The truck will definitely outlast me.

@@harrietgibbs4086 Thank you! My impression is the old LN106 diesel pickups are getting harder to find now. I believe there are some around, but not so many nowadays. How’s your experience?
@harrietgibbs4086

@@ShikokuFoodForest We never got the LN106 in the UK, only the LN105 with the smaller 2.4 engine, non aspirated. There are a few here with the 2.8 diesel engine which have been imported from Japan but not many! Even in Japan the LN107 seems more common, same engine but without free wheeling hubs on the front...also most JDM's have auto gearboxes so choice is really limited if you are wanting a manual gearbox! Which I do. Also, in the UK the majority have been really worked hard on building sites and farms and even if the engines are solid, the undersides and bodywork have suffered; rotten chassis are rife! But, well worth waiting for and looking for (and now paying for) a good one as they are the best of their type (IMHO), all the others from the same era aren't even around to count as challengers!

@@harrietgibbs4086 Very interesting to hear! I bought my LN106 about 15 years ago now. The time flies, feels like yesterday almost. My understanding was mine (1988) was one of the last years with the solid front axle, then upon doing some research I discovered later models can have the SFA. But, I’m no expert on their history. What amazed me was for a 1988, my truck was almost in new condition when I bought it. It was super clean and rust free. A real gem in my opinion compared to what we had available in Canada from that era. I have the naturally aspirated 2.8L diesel and 5-speed gearbox, double cab. The only thing I would have liked is perhaps a longer bed for carrying lumber or sleeping... lol! (I believe it is 5 feet, but forget now, since I’ve been living in Japan for 12 years now and my truck is back in Canada. Do you know the bed length?). But, not a deal breaker. I have been considering adding a turbo to increase the power by about 40%. I’ve heard as long as the boost is kept low at 8-10psi and the fuel is kept lean, the 2.8L engines and transmission can handle it. I’d like to hear anything you’ve heard as far as the safety and increase in power of adding a turbo to these. Shops like Barrima Diesel in Australia (lots of videos on KZfaq) have been adding turbos to these trucks for 30 years now with no trouble. But, it has to be done properly. Finding a mechanic with experience with these in Canada 🇨🇦 is difficult. I may consider just doing it myself. I could install the turbo kit, but I wouldn’t know how to make the required adjustments on the boost and fuel, etc., so I’d need help with that or do a lot of research. Let me know if you find the truck you are looking for.

This was super handy. I’m driving my boss’s 2011 Mercedes Vito but looking to buy a vehicle of my own. The Vito has had the power steering pump die, the fan doesn’t work - neither does the AC and I’ve replaced both brake and headlights in the 4 months I’ve been driving it. I think an old hilux sounds like a great upgrade haha!

2L small engine but the low gear ratio 4.88 with LSD help alot. You have to be patient with LN65 because its lack of power, you would rely on gear 1 and 2 to go to the hill

Liam, your sense of humor is great. I agree with you on everything. I have a 1988 LN106 and am considering adding a turbo for a little more power. Barrima Diesel for example in Australia has been safely adding turbos to these engines for 30 years. I hear as long as the boost is kept to about 10psi and the fuel is kept lean, it is safe to do. What is your opinion on this? Would you consider adding a turbo?

In case you’re wondering, I’m living in Japan now, but my double-cab truck is back in Canada 🇨🇦. I forget the box length. I think it is 5 feet, but I forget exactly since I haven’t driven my truck for 10 years. I’m thinking the box could be even shorter than 5 feet. I’m currently researching canopy options. Thanks!

@@ShikokuFoodForest Fellow Canadian! How do you find they perform in the cold in Canada? Any chance you looking to sell your double cab in Canada?? aahah
@ShikokuFoodForest
@ShikokuFoodForest 8 ай бұрын
@@samguenther3177 Hello! Where in Canada 🇨🇦 are you? The Toyota LN106 performs very well in Canada. The cold doesn’t affect the performance at all. I’ve always known, the air has a higher concentration of oxygen at colder temperatures, so perhaps improves performance. That’s why cold-air intakes are popular. I’ve done some driving in the snow only when I’ve had to around town. This truck can go anywhere. Snow is no problem at all up or down hills. I haven’t considered selling it at all, since I know this truck will last for generations because it’s built so well. This truck was like new when imported from Japan. It’s hardly been used over the past 12 years. But, it’s been maintained and driven to and from a summer home throughout the spring, summer and fall. I may consider selling if I received an offer I couldn’t refuse. I know these solid-front axle, diesel trucks have become harder to find in recent years.

All just maintenance over time if you buy new one your spending money on them from day one and there far to much electronics bs on them now that are a headache when they start playing up services every 15000ks anywhere from $800 to $1500 + after 100,000ks the big bill hits you that can cost you thousands. But most new vehicles after a 100,000ks the motor is done as there just not built to last. There use way more fuel and the listed goes on.
