**UPDATE** At 6:30, I mislabeled the cameras. In the individual shots, the A7IV and FX3 are mixed up... a few seconds later when I show all 3 side by side, the labels are correct! Thanks to @zeko reko for pointing this out and keen eye!

Quick question... according to sensor light, would the sigma 18-50 2.8 in apsc mode on the a7iv at 18mm have the same amount of sensor light as a full frame version 16-55 2.8 in 27mm on the a7iv in full frame? Like, will the 2.8 amount of light hitting the sensor be the same?

ok...its now 3 weeks that Iam posting a question that no one seems could not answer. Is that possible to have a raw video file from the a7iv with hdmi conected to an external monitor like ninja 5! So no compression at all???

My main reason for upgrading is the seemingly vast autofocus improvement over my A7III. That feature alone will directly impact the number of usable shots you get.

Hey, I'm a new-ish follower and fan of your stuff. I really appreciate this video and production that went into it. I've pre-ordered an A7IV and can't wait to start shooting with it. One small suggestion that I would have with regards to how this video was edited would be to introduce the different topics with the video "card" before you verbally say it. Right now, you have it backwards (you say what the next thing you're talking about is going to be, then you flash the card), but that basically adds nothing since what you say is usually more detailed than what the card has written on it. For example, at 6:18 you discuss video and skin tones. Your card reads very simply, "Video & Skin Tones." That is a great way to introduce the subject and prepare the viewer. Your verbal explanation of, "definitely a big question that some people wanted answered was the video quality, and specifically the skin tones verses the A7S III" would then fit in much better after the card since it is an expanded version of what the card has already stated / introduced and also fits in better after the audio cue you've employed. I hope that makes sense. (As an aside, this would also let you put the card right at the beginning of the chapter markers, if you were so inclined.) Keep up the great work, man! EDIT: A much more clear example is in the Crop Lenses section at 10:32. It's a bit redundant to use the card so long after you've introduced the subject.

Excellent video! I’m upgrading to this from an a7iii. I also have an a7siii so the a7iv will be an excellent b cam for video since now it has the same codecs as the a7siii, and for photos I’m really looking forward to the 4D tracking focus and higher MP.

Many thanks for answering those questions. My only concern was the rolling shutter but as long as it is similar to A7iii's then I'm okay with it. I've used the a7iii for 3 years and rolling shutter wasn't a problem (it all depends on how we use the camera and what we use it for). I'm excited for you on your upcoming travels. I am going on a 3 months travel to the far east next Jan and will be taking the sony a7iv with me.

@@dunnadidit Yeah but don't expect it to be on Par with the A7s3, less to read out with that camera, this camera has over over 2x as much to read out. If you ever tried the A7r4 you will see how bad it can get, at 62 megapixels it can get pretty bad even in photos.

as an aspiring content creator, this was such a useful video. I was stuck on the A7C or A7IV as a first serious workhorse camera. Knowing that the image quality between the a7c/a7siii vs the a7iv isn't much different, there isn't much incentive for me to get the a7iv, other than getting it for the video capabilities. That being said, i really should try out the a7c, invest the leftover money on some quality glass and in the future, upgrade to the a7iv instead of the a7siii for its video capabilities since it is much cheaper and still a pretty good video camera. Thanks for this video. I'll still go to my local camera shop and rent out these equipment to get a feel for the camera. Love this indepth review man.

Been using the A7C for the last year and few months. It was my first full frame mirrorless camera when I transitioned from the Canon APS-C DSLR world (80D) to the Sony full frame world! At first I looked at the A7iii but I needed the updated video features, color science, autofocus and flip out screen that the A7C just so happened to have over the A7iii. Come about a year and a few months later and having made some money using the A7C, I think I’m ready to sell it so I can upgrade to the A7IV. The A7C has served me well and has helped me create great video and photo projects (even shot a wedding with it if you can believe it. No Duel SD card slot made it extremely stressful though lol) however I think in order to be taken more seriously as a professional creator and also be able to fully trust and rely on my gear with the additional pro features I’m not getting the with A7C. I think it’s worth the upgrade

Great review! You answered a lot of the questions I had and this was very helpful! I have an a7iii and the one thing that drives me crazy is the gray focus point colour.....I wish Sony would provide a firmware update for this! Looking to upgrade to the a7iv for the improved af and menu system! As a fellow Canadian (Ontario 👋🏻) just wondered if you sell your used gear privately or through a company? I see a number of options in the US but aren’t really aware of any here. Appreciate any info you might have to share! Thanks again for the video!

Big thanks for this and for people who asked the questions! I'm really interested on 1080p modes as I never use 4K. I don't have enough SSD space or powerful computer for that. Do you know if you can do 120fps in 1080p APSC crop mode? Also, is active stabilization allowed in crop mode? And finally, can you alternate both SD cards slots for storaging the videos? I mean, storaging 24fps files in SD Slot 1 and the 120fps files in SD Slot 2. Thank you!

I've already pre-ordered my A7iv. (I'm at the front of the line at a major local camera shop. Heehee.) Personally, I think the benefits and the positives outweigh what others consider to be shortcomings. Or I consider them to have workarounds to overcome them. I shoot still photos, and I'm happy with my a7iii, but I am eager to upgrade to the a7iv. I mostly want it for the slightly better ergonomics, better I/O covers, and AF improvements. Oh, and higher rez sensor is just a nice bonus.

Very solid content as usual. As I have not shot a lot of video, but hope to, I still get dizzy with all the codecs, bit rates, LUTs, and color grading. Maybe you have a video that breaks all that down? Or maybe know one. But nevertheless this vidio reinforces my confidence in my A7iv decision. Here as I’m ready to upgrade from my a7c, would love to jump to the fx3 but is just out of budget right now, mainly because with a7IV I can sell my a7c, I feel like I would have to keep the a7c for casual (personal) shooting and photos. The a7IV gets me into 10-bit, active stabilization and better low-light which are the primary areas I’m looking to improve by upgrading

I got a Sony a3000 and still can squeeze the juice out of it both photo and even video (surprisingly 😅), but I think it will be more sense to upgrade for me to the a7iv however the a7iii are coming with very cool bundles and low prices which are very tempting

Greetings from Bangladesh. I was going to buy Z6ii. But after watching a7iv's autofocus capability I've changed my plan. Z6ii is a fantastic camera. But Sony beats here Nikon I guess. I believe the crop in 4K/60 is because the sensor read out speed, at this price point, is too slow to read the entire space of the sensor for 60FPS. This is where of a lot of the added cost of the 7SIII/FX3/A1 comes from, the higher read speed sensor. This is also why the rolling shutter is an issue with this camera and not so much on the higher end bodies. This concept is the same for distorted silent shooting for fast moving subjects. By the time the sensor reads from top to bottom, the subject has moved in the frame.

I think one point that reinforces it is that the R6 has similar issues and the S5 is much better but not perfect. I believe the Z5 is similar but I'm not sure

Holy smokes you've addressed pretty much all questions everyone had. Great work mate!! There's only two query in had left: 1. Roughly how many continuous images can you shoot before it starts buffering/slowing down in compressed raw (V90 sd card). 2. After the 1.5x crop factor, does the "clear image zoom" mode go to 1.5x or 2.0x (my A7iii is 1.5x for reference) Thanks in advance :)

Hey! I’m glad to hear that. Unfortunately I had to send the camera back so I can’t actually test these for you until they start shipping. But some anecdotal thoughts… 1. The buffer is ridiculous. Put some fast cards in there and it seems like it never hits the wall. 2. I think it was just 1.5x more but I didn’t do this specific test unfortunately.

Great video! One question though; in your comparison photos of the lake/ mountain, the a73 showed ripples on the water and the a74 there weren't many and just looked smoother; was it a difference in camera or just timing of the shot?

Most likely just the timing of the shot. Took me a bit to swap out the cameras and the lens and such so that they’d all be in the same place and with the same lens.

Hey Dunna, I do not have any experience with this. But have you tried or thought about using a speedbooster? Because then you could use full frame lenses in 4k60p without cropping and losing light. I can imagine losing autofocus accuracy and speed or in some case losing autofocus entirley is the big con.

Really good and informativ video. I will do an upgrade from my a6600 and my both a6300. I don't care about the 60p crop because it's not important (to me). The most important feature to me is 10bit 4:2:2 with that higher bitrates and codecs. That's the deal breaker for me. Because i'm coming from aps-c i will using my aps-c lenses for the 1st time. Like i wrote before, crop i don't care. Only one full frame lens i will buy for the 1st time, maybe a Samyang 35mm f1.8. Later in time of course i will upgrade my lenses too.

Hello, thank you for this guide. Can you confirm which lenses allow the use of active stabilization? I am about to purchase the Sony A7IV and Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art Lens for Sony E for use in wedding videos and other uses. Will this combination allow for active Steady Shot and other stabilization techniques? Do ONLY Sony lenses allow these? Thank you for your help!

Cool to have A7iv with FF lenses fof wedding shoot & with APS-C Lenses for travel. Since it shoots at 4k from 4.6k in APS-C its good.

I am surprised that you missed the most important improvement, that of video focusing and tracking. The A7 IV is ahead of the A7c who is ahead of the A7iii. The user's control of how fast it tracks moving objects and people and how sticky you can make it, is the main reason most people are upgrading. And this is an area that demand fast processors (Like the A1). THAT is where the processing power went in case you still wonder :)

I just bought this camera after using the a6400 for about a year and a half. It arrives tomorrow. The negatives this camera have are nothing short of what I’ve already had experience with in my a6400

I have an a6400 and find that I am missing some shots by using non-stabilized lenses (tamron 11-20 f2.8 and Sony 16-55 f2.8). My question is about selling this gear and upgrading to a body with IBIS. I really only shoot photos so am not concerned with video features. With the Sony a7iv being out, it seems like there are some great deals to be had on used versions of the a7iii so I was wondering if a used a7iii would be the best way to jump up to full frame, or if the a7iv is worth the extra money. I've seen really clean a7iii bodies going for around $2000 CAD which is a massive savings over the a7iv when you factor in taxes. Thanks for all the awesome videos!

I think that anything you use will be an upgrade over the 6400 when it comes to moving up to full frame the a7iii takes insane photos, the a7riii also takes insane photos and it has that 40 something megapixel sensor which is wild and also puts it in about the same photo range as the new a7iv with its 33 mp sensor so if you’re trying to get close to the a7iv get the a7riii it’s around 2400 used RN at least that’s what the one I saw today at Best Buy was selling for

I wouldn't mind going with the R6 but I've seen that the Ibis is pretty wobbly and ofc the lenses are expensive

Waiting to get the A7iv here for Travel Cinematography, the price difference with the A7sIII is major money savings. Savings of abt 1300 euro in Greece which is a nice Tamron 2.8, and an RSC2 Pro combo based on greek Prices... The 4K 120 is the only thing I wish the A7iv would have but I think with the added bitrates for 1080p 120FPS you can definitely "fake" it with a careful upscale. Rolling shutter is definitely not pretty but nothing you can't solve with careful shot planning and even some post processing

About monitoring audio with bt headphones there is a workaround. You can use your phone to monitor wireless via wifi and then use youf bt headohones conected to your phone to monitor the audio. Its gonna have a small latency but its so low that its nlt a problem at least for me!

You’ll just be limited to which codecs you can use. I think there’s a chart out there that shows you if you do a Google for it!

To me it is a big upgrade to a7III/a7c. But my situation is I am always bring and use 2 cameras for my video shoot. My a7III and a7c works seamlessly together. For wedding if we have second shooter, then we have like 4, 5 cameras. It is kind pointless for one camera has 10bit 422 shooting slog3 and rest of cameras still shoot 8bit 420 in cine2 or hlg. I would say if one has a7sIII and want a second camera is less expensive than a7sIII but still retain all the codec, then this is the great option. But for me until I can afford two a74, I will still stick to my current camera set up.

Unfortunately, I sold my a7siii and the cage I had, but the only complication I can see would be the dials on top are now different (and taller) so it would depend on the cage. But the base should fit I think.

I'm fond of the RSS Modular Plates. I was hoping that the one for the Sony A1 and SIII would work, but the A7 IV's published dimensions (5.16 x 3.78 x 3.15″) are slightly different than the A1 and A7 S III (5.08 x 3.82 x 3.19″).

I heard on another video that a7iv was a tad wider than a7Siii and that strap lugs were also a tad different which means not all cages designed for a7Siii will be good for a7iv. Personally I would like to know if SmallRig cages will fit or not as I have yet to see a SR cage specifically for a7iv. Anyone know or whether SmallRig will be doing a video centric cage for hybrid shooters choosing a7iv?

Great video, thank you. I am lucky enough to have the Sony a1, but I am looking for a B cam for many scenarios and I am considering the A7IV. The concern I have with the rolling shutter issues is, I shoot a lot of kids dance concerts. A question for you: If I had the A7IV locked off on a tripod for the wide shot to capture the whole stage (so the kids would be fairly small), so you think it would be an issue? The kids would be moving through the frame quickly, but I am not sure that at a distance the rolling shutter would be an issue. I’d appreciate your views. (Oh, I’d be shooting in either 24 or 30frames 4K). Thanks so much. ✌️

I've watched many of these a7iv videos. I came across one video where the landscape photographer talked about the a7iii having "hot spots" that are gone with the a7iv. There was also a "banding & striping issue" with the a7iii sensor. This appears with certain lens and high backlight conditions. I believe this is gone with the a7iv sensor.
