The strength in psychic sorcery is that a spell cast using the feature can't be couner spelled as there are no verbal or somatic components to the casting. It is OP when you swap out your psychic spells for more aggressive spells like confusion, synaptic static etc

I wouldn't be surprised if WOTC change the base sorcerer class so all of the subclasses have access to an expanded spell list.

Not only that, but you get the added bonus of casting those spells for cheaper price! For example, making a 5 level slot for such spell cost 7 sorcery points, while using psi sorcery only cost 5! Basically it’s always better to cast psi spells exclusively through this as you get a more in return, perfect if you want to keep blasting the enemy with powerful spells, and great for utility spells!

made a kalashtar aberrant mind sorcerer with the astral drifter background. working eith my dm to allow tue background to grab some warlock abilities. making it that he was stuck with a mind flayer colony and that an elder brain is his patron doen the road.

I'd have to disagree with the level 6 ability rating. It's the cheapest way in the game to cast a spell with spell points the absolute utility of not being seen to cast any of these. Actually burning your spell slots to make spell points to cast spells from this list is worth it. Subtle synaptic shocks are wild. You can heighten all of these spells aswell.

I wasn't big on the Aberrant Mind Sorcerer when it was in testing or when printed not because it wasn't mechanically strong but the concept just didn't click. Taking a look at it, this is easily one of my favorite Sorcerer subclasses.

It’s a really powerful one because if the freedom to switch spells but flavour wise wild magic is really hard to beat.

I think you are really underestimating the power of psionic sorcery. 1. It is an even trade from spell slots to sorcery points. This allows you to cast your level 1 psionic spells without using up the spell slots needed for shield etc... This is especially amazing if you take silvery barbs and hideous laughter, as these have no upcast benefits, thus you want to be able to spam these spells while using only the minimum resources. 2. It gives you a free subtle spell on any spell cast this way. Not only does this save you 1 sorcery point from having to cast subtle spell, it also means you can avoid taking subtle spell at all, freeing up a different meta magic 3. It allows you to cast the spell without components, take summon aberration.

Yuan-ti Pureblood is also a good choice for this class, I'm playing one atm and the aesthetics of both class and race go pretty well together

So the miles section for telepathic speech, I was confused on this until I asked another party member. Once you start getting teleportation spells this is where the miles distance comes into play

i don't get why so many people get hung up on "you can talk for miles" of the telepathic speech when it clearly states it lasts a few minutes and you need to SEE the target within 30ft of you when you cast the spell. It's VERY situational to use this at such distances, such as maintaining an open channel with someone who can teleport and would use a teleportation spell such a (relatively) small distance.

I made a Aberrant Mind Sorcerer whose background is the Marine, and for flavour wise, I decided they get their power from a spirit that attached itself to them during their stint as a Marine, cause tbh I don't like the flavour text of the published version, and went back to the UA version without the extra clunky dice mechanic.

Flavour wise the Abberant mind is totally open to the player deciding where the powers come from. I might have to re-read the old UA Abberant Mind rules for a refresher. Thanks for reminding me about them!

@@RichMerry Ye, I think it only shows up in the one where the clunky dice mechanic they added on top of it, as any search I make just brings up the revised UA with the flavour text we know of now.

Changeling is the Perfect Choice for this class imo. Rp wise you can transform into a good amount of different races and your true form is usually pretty horrifying and eldritch/discordant . Also stat wise, picking changeling allows you to use your +2 to cha and +1 to anything to have a +3 to your cha(for some reason this class allows this...).

It doesn't actually work like that! You increase your charisma by 2 and one *other* score by 1. It's still an amazing race for the flavour (I mean who doesn't want to be an eldritch horror masquerading as your everyday elf) and the +1 can bump up your con or dex

@@millennialfish9219 That's my bad, that how it was in the older books but apparently it was changed in the newer updates of the books or something like that. I think i got confused because DnD beyond still allows for you to get +3 to CHA at lv 1 when building a changeling.

I have rolled this for the next opportunity, but my biggest frustration is that dnd beyond doesn't let you swap out the spells from your psi list which is one of if not the biggest strength boost over other sorcs.

Rolled up an Aberrant Mind Sorcerer with one level warlock dip for a one shot this weekend. Variant Human with the Ritual Caster feat, Strixhaven student background, Fey touched at level 4. 16 spells at level 5.

Used the Reborn race & play as a guy who woke up on a slab in the corner of an abandoned Frankenstein-ish labratory. In it were filled with failed cadaver experiments next to autopsied creatures. Next to mine: a Mind Flayer.

Don't forget, new optional rules allow Sorcerer's to use Ritual casting.

@@verminsfate Tasha's Page 65. Additional Sorcerer Spells. "If a spell can be cast as a ritual, the ritual tag appears after the spell's name."

Ah ok it doesn't say anything about giving the ability to ritual cast as a class feature though. That's just the standard line about the ritual cast tag being in the spell info. Sorcerers can't ritual cast outside of taking the feat. It would need to say something like an example for Bard in the PHB, (You can cast any bard spell you know as a ritual if that spell has the ritual tag).

@@verminsfate Kinda weird they put that in Tasha's under the Optional Class Features. The statement logically parses that all ritual spells have a ritual tag as a predicate if a, then b. In your example "if a bard casts a ritual spell, then it is a ritual spell", is tautalogical. Putting it in a new class features section infers that it is a new class feature. I would also like to think that WoC uses consistent phrasing in such rules, but since they don't, your interpretation is also valid.

If your playing your first character it can get a bit complicated but if you have some experience under your belt then yes, this would be a great subclass to play

Note: Everything boils down to how your group plays and whether your DM throws hard things at you. It boils down a lot to what you like. The problem with the sorcerer for a new player is that since your list is somewhat fixed and restricted to few spells it makes the spells you choose much more important. If you make bad choices then you are stuck with them at least until you level up and you only get to swap one spell per level. The wizard needs more bookkeeping to keep track of spels and preparing but is much more forgiving. If you choose bad spells you can just hunt down new ones to put in your book and swap them out daily. But if you want to get a taste of playing a full caster (one who follows standard spell progression and gets lvl 9 spells) I would probably recommend going cleric. Some decent defenses and all your spells are known so you can swap them out daily. That said, the aberrant mind is really fun to play, I play one who just hit lvl 6 who is really good at handling social situations, he was a high stakes jewel thief (think oceans eleven or james bond-esque). When he couldn't talk to people to get what he wanted there were always subtle spells affecting them.

WHAT psionic sorcery is not fantastic? it's just an economic bonus???? Where did you learn to play, this is the BEST feature of the aberrant mind. 1- you pay the spell level in SP. So contrary to the usual sorcerer who need to spend 5 point to get a level 3 slot, but regain only 3 if he convert the slot back to SP, here you can cast your level 3 spell for just 3 point. So convert your level 3 slot into SP then cast your psionic spell with SP. 2- NO VERBAL, SOMATIC, MATERIAL component. this basically mean you have SUBTLE metamagic for FREE and you can COMBINE it with other metamagic. Go ahead or heighten that psionic hold monster spell and watch the enemies wizard UNABLE to counterspell you since he didn't saw you cast the spell, since their is no verbal, somatic nor component required, he cannot see you use verbal, somatic or material component, he cannot see any sign of your casting since their is no sign of you casting spells. Or in RP encounter, if m sorcerer is talking to a guard and in the middle of the conversation he start chanting arcane word and waving his hand, their is a good chance the guard will start a fight and roll for initiative. But if my sorcerer stay silent for 6 second while he psionically cast suggestion or charm person, suddenly the guard become a lot more cooperative. Subtle metamagic is extremely powerful and getting it for FREE on some of you spells (make sure to select you spell you want to cast subtlety as your psionic spell) is extremely powerful feature.
