If you have young trees you need to protect them from animals. In this video, I show you what I use to fence in my trees and what you can expect to pay.
Rabbits will hurt trees and in my area, whitetail deer will destroy your trees if you don't have them fenced in.
In this video, I show you examples of what you should do as well as many examples of mistakes made. My hope if you learn what to do and more importantly what "not" to do so you can keep your trees safe.

I’ve lost some really nice white pines because I “intended” to fence them in but never got around to it. Learned my lesson. Now I surround them like Fort Knox. It takes time and isn’t too expensive, but at least I don’t feel like butting my head against the barn wall after the deer have destroyed another one.

Sorry to hear that Bill. Do you have a lot of deer? In Iowa deer eat white pines like salad. I sell a lot but am nervous every time one leaves

More fencing. Ugh. Bought 15 root trees. Finally done with all the research and figuring out where to plant. Then it dawned on me. The animals. Ugh! I’ll be glad when all the “city slicker” in me is gone! And btw, what keeps out the deer seems to add to the fun for the bears. :/ Now I understand my neighbors fortress around their place.

I just used those fiberglass reflecting traffic pole thingies I interweave them in the 2 inch by 4 inch wired fence, its a lot easier to plant them in the ground but I suggest doing it after a good soaking rain that will soften the dirt up. like my dirt has a lot of clay and becomes hard as a rock when dry

I enjoyed your video. I used chicken wire, so much for my smarts. My neighbor used the same wire and stakes you did but raised the wire up so the bottom is maybe 2' from the ground. That way the tree is protected and you can take care of the weeds that grow here in SW Oregon. You didn't seem to have any of them there things.

Hi!! Tku for sharing your tree saving mission!! I’ve recently planted 11 4’ green giants and I’ve already noticed deer has nibbled or sampled on some of the trees. I’m looking for a simple and effective way to protect them and I found your video. My question is, how long do you keep the fence around them? Even after the trees get situated, the deer can still chew on them if they’re hungry?! I even thought about a dumb solution of planting something they like to eat to deter them from the green giants, but I’m afraid I’ll invite a deer party in the yard … 😂!! What’s your opinion? What’s the most effective tactics against hungry deer? I don’t necessarily want my trees to be in jail while growing up?

If you have a lot of trees in a row, you could just use barbed wired, since it would be much cheaper. And when wrapped several times around the perimeter of all the trees, it would keep the away deer as well.

I have an animal dig under my slab corner house. I put a heavy rock there and it moved it! I believe its an armadillo. Guess I need a camara to see what it is. I live in woods and had no idea the deers here damage trees. TY. I have texas hogs destroying everything so I am looking to fence in to keep 650 lb hogs out. Wonder what fence works best?

Fence all around your property and get a german sheppard dog. That breed of dog will not allow a deer on your property and in addition will tree any squirrel that comes around and keep the squirrel in the tree until you come out and shoot it, which means, in addition you will get a walnut crop if you have those trees.

Mulch or chemicals. We use pendulum as pre emergent herbicide and the bulk /generic round up you get at farm stores

@@WoodwardAcres Thanks. We will definitely use pre emergent herbicide. We have a lot of tree mulch. I understand it sucks up nitrogen and even sheds water if it is too thick. We have access to partially composted tree leaves from a nearby city. That may be the best route. Thanks again.
@WoodwardAcres
@WoodwardAcres Жыл бұрын
I get our pre emergent from do your own dot com….it’s in a yellow jug and goes on yellow like paint but the color goes away with the first rain. I agree with going to get what you can cheap for mulch…..there is a local place that will bring a 14 tons at a time but I’m lucky and have space to store that. Good luck with your trees!!!! if you have the tree protector from Mossy Oaks, you can spray around the base. native grasses around the base of trees and shrubs actually helps the seedling retain and gather dew. I leave it around mine and don't have to worry about drying out.

Deer don’t like the smell/taste of any spruce tree. They will however rub their antlers and destroy any little tree during the rut
@inharmonywithearth9982
@inharmonywithearth9982 Жыл бұрын
As far as rutting goes just loosely twist a single strand of any kind of wire about a foot high from the ground to about 2 and a half feet. They rub the itchy velvet off and metal hurts the nerves. They won't rub on metal anymore than you will enjoy chewing aluminum foil. I have orchards with 🦌 and learned the hard way what works. Take the wire off once winter kicks in but don't forget to put it back early fall. Any 2 or 3 ft piece of wire works. That welded wire is expensive!.Your welcome.

We think rabbits were chewing our American Pillars. We fenced each 34 trees similar to yours but baby rabbits can get in those squares. So we wrapped them again with plastic fencing. EXPENSIVE! But it’s time to remove our fences because they’re growing up against it. Back to the rabbit problem- what the heck do we do now?

I bought tree protectors for oaks from Mossy Oaks-Nativ Nursery. they work as skinny green houses and rut and brousing protectors for about two years. then the metal fence cage must be used or loose the trees. One night after three years-the deer are hungry and horny. I don't care how much my neighbrs whine about how ugly my cages are--my plants are native and necessary. They have nothing or a bunch of exotic ecologically dead growing things. You can get used to the cages. You will only be depressed and defeated if you don't use the fence cage around the trees and shrubs themselves.

Are those Doug-fir? They will absolutely keep growing even if touching the wire. All you need is to protect the leader from getting nipped and the bark from getting rubbed. Most (IE Weyerhauser) do nothing to protect Doug-fir. They come up fine.

The black plastic pipe around the trunk of the tree is a very bad idea.. Not only can it heat up in the sun, but ants and other insects will move into that pipe and start eating the tree. Either fence it off, or make yourself some hardware cloth protectors.. air needs to circulate.
