This movie is not based on the book "How Do You Live"... saying it is loosely based on the book is like saying Dune is loosely based on The Lord of the Rings. This movie will appeal to hardcore Miyazaki fans. It is also Miyazaki's way of telling the whole world "My son is not worthy to take over me."

I came away with the message of "Do what you want to do, even if it means my legacy dies with me". I don't think Miyazaki was speaking ill of anyone, but rather saying that while he is searching for a successor, he ultimately wants his grandson to live their own life. This was basically a message for his grandson that he could leave behind for when he's gone.

They literally said "partially inspired by" and even goes further to say "The film isn't a straight adaptation of the story, but rather a story about someone who loves the book"... It's literally all in the one sentence that the book is brought up lmfao. Are you that dense?

The message ☠️ I honestly feel a little badly for his son since he was a LANDSCAPER before being asked to do animation. So he did... And then Hayao was like "yeeeeaaaaaa, you ain't it son"

@@RudyAdrian no that's only better in live-action, because otherwise the desynchronisation of mouth and voice is jarring. With animation, unless the dub VAs are _unbearable_ (which usually, in a production this high-end they're not) then it's *way* better- the animation is designed to be looked at and subtitles distract the eyes

This is not what every anime lover wants. This movie is a goodbye letter and it's not a very well done one. Also not based on the How do you live, which is why they changed the name. It is something about herons being liars. It's a boring confusing story. The reviewers are just being very flattering.

So the 1st part of this movie had strong horror-elements - and it should've stayed that way; I don't think everything past the 1st act really works - if the story were about a young boy who's tricked into killing his father's new wife (his aunt) by a heron who's some sort of trickster demon that wants to pose as a human and the boy has to go into the underworld and decide whether to bring back his mother or his aunt while the heron tries to prevent his return - that would've made one hell of a Miyazaki movie BUT alas it is not that

Yeah I kind of agree. I know Ghibli fans don’t want to hear much criticism but I wish the movie would have went darker the way it seemed it wanted to. Instead it seems like it self corrects and plays it safe

Totally agree. The father also needed to be part of the action. He married his dead wife's sister? Man, if HE had been the one to meet them both and have to choose one, that would have been some high drama. And the child version of the first wife had no opinion on her sister ending up with her widower. Huh? SG films usually have so much emotional punch. This had none.

I love Miyazaki-san, but oof, this movie wasn't it. Is it better than Disney? Infinitely. But too many ideas, all of them shopworn, and very little emotional punch made this film less than memorable, in my opinion.

Fantastic movie for those people who can't think straight and those who have psychosis. For all those scientists , mathematicians out there, this movie makes no sense and no logic.

I do computer graphics engineering and I liked this movie. What are you saying lol. I can see why people dont like this movie but don’t just label people as stupid because they have an opinion.
