Palermo in Sicily to Rome by train using Trenitalia, where the train boards a ferry at Messina to cross to mainland Italy. Sicily to Rome by train is one of the world’s best train journeys.
We bought our tickets in advance online at a cost of €49 each for 1st class, not bad for an 11 hour journey which also includes a ferry crossing for 30 minutes in 1st class! We travelled first class very comfortably with our own table and great reclining seats but in all honesty…we recommend you break up the trip as we both found it really long and hard going, especially after 8 hours and knowing you still have another 4 potentially. Maybe consider an overnight stop in Naples???? Even though it was tiring we both loved it all and was an exciting experience when boarding the ferry, not what we had expected at all!!!!
At the start of the ferry crossing we were instructed to stay aboard the train by an official even though there are viewing stations on the boat, we were happy to sit and enjoy our food and wine 🍷
