Palermo in Sicily to Rome by train using Trenitalia, where the train boards a ferry at Messina to cross to mainland Italy. Sicily to Rome by train is one of the world’s best train journeys.
We bought our tickets in advance online at a cost of €49 each for 1st class, not bad for an 11 hour journey which also includes a ferry crossing for 30 minutes in 1st class! We chose our seats so they are reserved we for us too. Follow the link below to visit the train website we used to book our trip:
www.trenitalia.com/en.html
We travelled first class very comfortably with our own table and great reclining seats but in all honesty…we recommend you break up the trip as we both found it really long and hard going, especially after 8 hours and knowing you still have another 4 potentially. Maybe consider an overnight stop in Naples???? Even though it was tiring we both loved it all and was an exciting experience when boarding the ferry, not what we had expected at all!!!!
At the start of the ferry crossing we were instructed to stay aboard the train by an official even though there are viewing stations on the boat, we were happy to sit and enjoy our food and wine 🍷
This video was created in March 2022 when all covid restrictions were in place. Changes to travel restrictions may have altered the requirements for face masks and social distancing, check the website listed above for clarity.

Awesome experience and to pass Vesuvius at sunset was perfect! We climbed to the summit years ago and looked straight down into the volcano 🌋 Great to see it again. 11 hours is a long journey especially if you don’t have a sleeper carriage but the scenery was stunning and we had wine 🍷

Can you catch the train from mesina instead of palermo?

I believe so - the train makes many stops along the north coast as it heads to messina before crossing on the ferry. Please subscribe to our channel 😊

some time ago we took the sleeper from Milano to Palermo, quite a trip. The ferry doe not last very long and you can get out of your train apartment to have a drink or so on the ferry.

Why didn’t you leave the train deck and go upstairs to see the views of Messina and the straits? You chose to stay in the darkened train carriage in the bowels of the ship? How strange.

We were instructed to stay on the train. It was a great experience all the same and we had wine!

@@TravelUnravelled Aaah, that is really a shame they instructed you to do that. Part of the experience is going up on deck, grabbing a coffee and watching Messina fade into the distance as you cross the Straits. Never mind, it was a nice video.

@@TravelUnravelled Good morning is the first time I hear that they force you to stay on the train while sailing usually they force you to get off and stay on the deck of the ship. I have done the one crossed by train several times. Anyway congratulations for the video.

Hello! Thank you for your message, I’m not sure to be honest. We weren’t really that worried about staying on board as we had wine and food to keep us occupied! 🙂👍 We really enjoyed the journey but would recommend splitting it up with stops on the way as 11 hours straight was a long time. Have you been before?

You guys are so awkward. You do realize that you can leave the train while on the ferry and go to the passenger lounge !
