An angry mob in Mexico poured water on a clueless female tourist, hurled insults at her and demanded that she be locked up after she ascended the ancient Mayan pyramid and was filmed dancing on the stairs.
The unidentified woman, who is said to be a Spanish national, sparked an outrage Monday when she ignored the rules barring visitors from climbing Mayan Temple of Kukulcán in Chichén Itzá, which was named in 2007 one of the New 7 Wonders of the World by UNESCO.

This is Chichen Itza... They used to allow people to climb it but they stopped in 2008 due to safety concerns.

@@VaporRonin Another reason they stopped people going up was the damage it was causing to the pyramid. According to the tour guide I had, shortly after the prohibited people climbing on the pyramid.

@@tyleroptional2639okay so I wasn't crazy, I always assumed that you could walk up them because I've seen so many photos of people doing it and exploring them. The only pyramids/temples I haven't seen fully walked on or explored by the public is the pyramids in Egypt. So thank you because I would've assumed I just would've assumed too that it was cool walked up each of them. I guess the old saying is true "when in Rome, do what the Romans do". However that little dance was Hella disrespectful l!

@@johnreidy2804 It's illegal to climb the pyramid because if it was allowed, it would get heavily damaged by literally millions of people a year climbing it. Everyone except her refrained from climbing it but she thought she was special. (They weren't "bashing" her, they were booing her selfish behaviour. Looks like some water was thrown which is OTT.)

There's lots of Mayan pyramid site spread throughout Southern Mexico. You can't climb that one, but there are other sites where you can climb (: For example you can climb the pyramids in Merida, Mexico because they aren't as tall (less hazardous from falling) and less worn down. They give tours that take you to the top and demonstrate how they would pray up there using their Mayan language. It's much more interactive than this main site that has the biggest pyramid.

Thanks for the info. I guess I kinda thought that if you weren’t hurting anything, then you could climb the steps. People should ask an official of the site first. One thing that gets me, is those tourists who antagonize the Royal Palace Guards in England, or the US Marine Sentries who guard the Tomb Of The Unknown Soldier.

Indeed, I took a tour in 1991 that included everyone climbing and entering this pyramid. There was a statue of a jaguar made with jade deep into the pyramid. However, the interior stone stairway was very narrow, dark and scary to descend from. I’m not surprised that they stopped people from climbing this particular pyramid because it is dangerous if you slip and fall. We also took some incredible pics of the view from up from the top of the pyramid.

This is what I found about this disrespectful tourist, “…Officials said that Abigail Villalobos had attempted to pass herself off as a Spaniard after being arrested for her viral stunt, but it has since been determined that she is actually from Mexico.” It is unfortunate that Abigail Villalobos disrespected her people and her own culture.

My daughter & I were fortunate to be able to climb El Castillo in Chichen-Itza, Mexico in 1992. The steps were very steep, and only one rope which laid on the steps for safety. It was worth it to gaze across the whole of the Mayan metropolis. It was just breath taking and will be forever forged in our memories!! 🙂

@@briankane460 not lies. You used to be able to climb the pyramid. But they stopped allowing it because of wear. It was a similar situation with the great pyramids of Giza in Egypt. For 1,000s of years the pyramids were tourist traps, even back then, and people would climb them, but after a 1,000+ plus years of people climbing them it created wear and tear, and in modern times they decided it was not worth it to keep degrading the pyramid even more just to let people climb.
