Well there is definitely bias, but if I provide a logical explanantion based on its materials and engineering as to why it might not be the best but its better than other designs...I'm not sure how thats not helpful for deciding on a purchase. I'd be a little more cautious of the people that just list off something feels beefy and looks clean and leaves it at that... I also approached Sherpa, they didn't just drop an email in my inbox with free stuff. They also didn't fully sponsor it so I spent my own money as opposed to probably being able to get something completely for free from a different brand. I do my research and pitch companies and sometimes pay more for quality or a design I believe is the best which is unlike many that wait for the most lucrative opportunity regardless of product.

Your welcome, I went back and forth to Sherpa Colorado and 4runnerlifestyle witch is where I purchased my rack , both was un willing to help me 😢, funny , 4runnerlifestyle blames Sherpa for the explanation of the products and the lack of info to let the consumer know that other (PEAK) accessories won't attach to the Crestone Sport rack , kinda disappointed...

1. The bolts into the roof require alight touch with the torque - just enough to slightly flatten the bonded washer. I remember the torque spec was something like 20 inch-pounds, which is less than 2 foot-pounds. Don't crank them down too far, or you'll damage the bonded washers, over-compress the rubber pad, and pull the rack too close to the roof. 2. At the front, you can get some compression against the roof by adding slack to the center and rear bolts, enough to pull the middle 1/4 of an inch away from the roof, and then get a towel under the front edge to pull it away from the roof. Then you adjust the front pads, remove the towel, and re-tighten the center and rear bolts. When you draw the center to the roof, you get some pressure on the front, and this creates the friction required to keep the front from bouncing or shifting on the trail.

The gaps in the rubber feet to the built in rubber weather stripping, Did you not add any silicone sealant? While I'm not worried about leaking I was concerned about pooling water and it potentially causing rust areas.

For sure! It’s a Sherpa Equipment Co Crestone rack. It’s slightly taller than most racks that look similar so it actually fits more lightbars well. “OVLDENG” will save 5% on anything on their site as well. Sherpa sells special brackets for the diode dynamics SS5 lightbar so it’s easy but not sure on KC. I bet some other company makes brackets and they would be compatible. All these rack companies all use standard 2”x1”x47” extrusions typically.

Do you reckon Sherpa is a stronger rack that Prinsu if you have any knowledge of them? I have the Prinsu equivalent to this on my 4Runner with a Roofnest Falcon tent on it and had both side rails near the front mounting point crack in half on a road rip once while in Utah and I had to drive home to Minnesota like that which was sketchy. They warrantied out the side rails and I changed the mounting points of the tent to distribute the weight better but that still makes me uneasy with a 160lb tent up there knowing I’ve already broke it with fairly normal use. I’ve been contemplating switching the Prinsu out to something stronger for piece of mind but can never find a solid strength comparison between brands.
@OverlandEngineer
@OverlandEngineer Жыл бұрын
I have heard this story too many times. This is exactly why most switch to prinsu. I could have told these stories but I don't want to knock prinsu. They are good racks, they are just not the strongest. You just have to spec out everything appropriately. I think if someone is just mounting an awning , storage boxes, and traction boards, a prinsu will work well. For the heavy roofnest and CVT tents, I know so many people that have had to switch to Sherpa racks because of structural issues. If you spec out the rack right, some people don't need the extra structure and they save money by getting the prinsu rack. I think that people don't think your situation happens so they go with the cheaper option and thats not really the case, better to overbuild so you don't have a problem in the woods.
@AidanKemp213
@AidanKemp213 Жыл бұрын
@@OverlandEngineer Yeah the rattle of a snapped rack on every bump from Salt Lake to St. Paul made me question my decision of Prinsu even though I was pretty impressed with the build quality. I had my tent on a pair of tent mounting feet when it broke which is what Prinsu recommended, but with the warrantied one currently I have my tent on double the mounting points to hopefully spread the weight more. One other gripe is just driving around town I always hear a creaking noise from the rack flexing and have been hunting down the source and trying to fix it forever with no luck. It wasn’t on my immediate radar but sounds like a rack switch is my next project before winter. At least a freshly warrantied Prinsu on twin cities marketplace should go quick to offset the cost😂

@OverlandEngineer

If you think that there are other creators that buy all their stuff full price you would be horribly mistaken. That’s exactly how everything is on Instagram as well. It’s not feasible for most of the overlanding creators of similar size to be able to afford everything we do to make content frequently. To buy everything ourselves full price we would be posting one video a month and that wouldn’t be enjoyable for all of you. What I think is important is that I reach out to companies that I am interested in working with rather than waiting for them to come to me with the best deal. I specifically have done a lot of research on racks and I bought my UpTop rack full price. I chose to reach out to Sherpa and they didn’t give me a rack for free. I’m sure I could’ve reached out to a couple of other companies and figured out a way to get a rack for free but I didn’t. That’s how I try to approach it to avoid what you are saying because I know that can be frustrating as a viewer to see a blatant bias where they pay for my review.

@Medoc yeah, I didn’t take it as disrespect. It’s just something I really want to address because I get annoyed by that stuff too. Especially on Instagram. People should be transparent about that and talk about why something is good objectively not just what is good so even if I have that bias people watching can still make an informed decision ya know?

Wow, that’s really a dramatic change. I actually liked your previous DIY roof rack, also thought that’s how you build your channel had right way. Now you keep switching by getting the sponsorship, I’m not sure what your real judgment for the viewer. Don’t get me wrong, it’s nice to get sponsors and free stuff, but I will take your view with a grain of salt.
@OverlandEngineer
@OverlandEngineer Жыл бұрын
I want to address this because I think many people might have this reaction but I have a rebuttal to it. I think taking my opinion now with a grain of salt is pretty dramatic. I mentioned in my DIY video that if I was not going to build my own, I would use a Sherpa rack. That was before I had even talked to the company. From doing my research, I thought they were the best. This is how I have chosen almost all of my sponsors. I have chosen a discount with a good company over free from other companies to keep this model. This rack still cost me quite a bit of money. They did not send it to me for free. I needed to buy this primarily to keep working on finishing my DIY tent. I disassembled the bulk of my tent to build the DIY rack I was running and that was going to severely delay working on my tent more. Plus anytime my DIY rack was off my roof, I wouldn't have some of my stuff on the truck to use or photograph which was just kind of a bummer. All this to say that I don't think you need to be worried about me dramatically changing my mind all the time and that I borderline eluded to potentially running this rack in the future in my DIY video, though I was not intending to buy it at that time. Anyway This seemed like a good way to keep working on my DIY roof top tent project and still have all the same functionality for making content weekly with products I believe in. The DIY rack is still an awesome option.
@wanderlostNW

Understood, that made sense. I really like your diy projects, think it gives us the inspiration than those product oriented from sponsorship. But totally understandable, you do what you got to do. Cheers!
