Learn how to let your dog meet other dogs by using leashes and muzzles and when to let them off leash

That last dog oof. I never tolerate jumping from any dog I meet. As soon as a dog tries to disrespect my space I correct them no matter if I've just met them or not. That family needs to set boundaries, especially the mom. People who coddle their dogs and treat them like neglected children are setting themselves up for major issues. If you want your dog to be happy, set boundaries.

People letting their little dogs jump like that used to drive me nuts because I was just baffled as to how they let it get that bad. I worked as a vet tech for 7 years so I saw it regularly. I always had large, powerful breeds of dogs but then I got my Havanese and had a big lightbulb moment about why, even with the best intentions regarding training, so many owners end up with little dogs that do this - it's partly due to how everyone else reacts to your little dog. When I started training and socializing my pup we'd be walking around in the city and no joke every other person - particularly women - who passed near us would immediately say 'AWWW!' in a baby voice or just a higher pitched voice and that alone was enough to get my pup over-excited. I would smile and keep moving but the other person would already be bending down to pet the adorable fluff, and in that instant my pup's excited reaction was rewarded with someone indulging her. This never happened to me with any prior dog and even when it did, the person would usually ask permission to pet them, probably because even a young rottweiler is big and potentially intimidating. For some reason people do not feel the need to control themselves or ask permission to reach out to a very small breed of dog, and it makes training these companion breeds who already tend toward distraction extremely challenging. We lived in Chicago so this happened hundreds of times over those very important initial months and in that time I tried every trick in every book to keep these people at bay or at least interrupt their behavior when I could see it coming. I have no problem telling people to f*** off out of my personal space but all the time? Stressful. So I tried to find a balance, which sometimes was just "she's in training so please ignore her" but other times like sitting outside drinking coffee where people weren't in a hurry, I'd tell them if they want to pet her they have to not look at her or give her any feedback until she's sitting calmly, no baby talk voice, don't kneel down just reach down and pet her, etc, they'd say ok and seem to get it, but the instant they saw her even get close to sitting calmly they would break all the other rules I literally had just given them and they'd agreed to. It's like they'd lose their minds. I even got her a vest that said IN TRAINING but apparently a tiny training vest on a tiny fluffy puppy added to the irresistibility and became a reason for them to linger and chat. They would even say "it's ok I don't mind" when my pup would stand on her hind legs to greet them, totally not getting it. Eventually I had to get mean because our prime window was closing and she still couldn't help but stand up on her hind legs to greet people. I seriously had to be on my guard every second because they would ambush us if I wasn't paying attention. She did improve but mostly when people come to the door and I'm ready for it in case she breaks the sit, it's much trickier when we're out walking and she's already in motion. It all sounds kind of ridiculous but it's a real issue to work around when you live in a city with people everywhere. My big dogs were wonderfully socialized because we were in the city with lots of opportunities to practice, but for my little dog it was more like those opportunities were rigged. I'm experienced with dogs and don't give up but I can definitely see how other people could get completely burned out repeating the same crap to people over and over, feeling like it's a lost cause and eventually using the logic of "my dog is little so it's not as important they don't jump up". I taught mine to sit up on her haunches and she often does that on her own when greeting people, like a compromise. She's 9 now so I happily take the compromise but I'm thinking of bringing another puppy into the fam soon and already trying to think of a solve for this particular challenge.

Taking one step forward as soon as the dog started jumping up would end it pretty quick. I always like to claim the space mid jump. It’s uncomfortable for the dog but it stops the jumping fast and they understand it.

I had to care for a pit with similar behavior the other week, he would be so overwhelmed or was so undersocialized he'd be trembling and drooling like crazy when meeting other dogs initially. He would also go after larger male dogs, and some very small ones. Pet corrector and muzzle worked like a charm until I could learn when to catch him, and actually got him to the point where he started playing with a few dogs.

One thing I've noticed in watching these videos is that if you have a good balanced dog with you in training, it ramps up your success by 1000%. Prince is at least 50% of your success, if not more. Cesar Milan uses his good balanced dogs as well. In my case, my husky/shepherd was having house training issues (not sure why, he's not a stupid dog at all) until he was boarded with his best buddy Malamute for a few times. She actually house trained him, I didn't. She also trained him about standing on tables, but oh well, you take the bad with the good :)

I tried slip lead but my GSD did not care. The Head halti/gentle leader worked better. I got her at 7 months old, she had separation anxiety, and dog and some people reactive when I got her, undersocialised (never been to a pet shop). She went on reactive dog training after 3 months of tackling her separation anxiety. She went for 6 sessions with other dogs, crate and, muzzle trained. She is better now, she still needs prompting at times. I take her to different places, play with my sibling's dog. Meet family members slowly, and get treats from their hands when she knows them. She went for her spey at 18 months, our vet helped us in getting her a few appointments of positive experience with her before she went for surgery.

🙋🏻‍♀️ question here, with all of your puppy and dog experience - I would love to see a video breaking down male vs female when it comes to training / raising / general qualities + personality characteristics & traits! I am curious 🧐 is there a difference? If so, what should future puppy parents be aware of. I know I can’t be thee only person out there contemplating between the two - and while there are many videos out there, I value what you say and your opinion with your background & experience. Your videos are always so informative, I’d love to hear your opinion & thoughts 💭 on it🙏🏼 thank you!

I'm not him, but I can tell you two things I have noticed. In my very limited experience with 3 German Shepherds and 2 Rat Terrier mixes of both sexes: the females are very affectionate and lick a lot and want a lot of "in your face" attention (like the jumping seen here, which my dad's female Rat Terrier mix does). My male Rat Terrier just wants food and walks and is happy to be left alone (though he likes belly rubs), and my current male Shepherd just wants to go for walks and, primarily, to fetch the ball! My 6 year-old male Rat Terrier mix cares primarily about food and is food motivated. My 2 year old Shepherd shows little interest in most treats and just wants me to throw things for him to retrieve (and chase him- which I try to avoid). In my limited experience, the females are absolutely terrified of fireworks (I had a Shepherd who tried to get between the back of the toilet and the wall!) and the males don't even notice the fireworks unless it is SUPER massively loud while inside the house (like, exploding in the air over the house on our front street one house over). They just don't care. It's amazing. This is based on 5 (actually 6) dogs, so I could be completely wrong! :D Also, I'm only telling you about two breeds. And I am in no way qualified to know what the heck I am talking about. So keep all that in mind! I look forward to a video from him on the subject you asked about too! This is, without question, the best dog training channel on here (along with Tom Davis of Upstate Canine Academy).

I was told by our shelter that most dogs in shelters are males. And I personally would never have 2 female dogs in one household. When they end up hating each other there is nearly nothing you can do to resolve that.one would need to go... That's the experience of a friend of mine...

In 47 years of training, I now have my first female. She's my wife's dog, unless she does something really great. ;) My wife was sure she wanted one female before we got to old. She is social, clear headed, and very cute, but not near as fast a learner as my males. But that is just who she is. I've trained enough females to know some are great, some not, same with males. I tell my wife the only thing about females is you never know what they are thinking. That goes for pretty much any species... LOL Females do take longer to teach to potty on command. Males can and will pee anywhere, anytime, females only pee when they need to.

Correcting to the side. Pressure, and release, to the side is also how I introduce any tool I'm using. The big one, the one that is really hard to teach, recognizing "intent". If you correct when the dog is thinking about reacting, it takes a lot less correction and you never get the big blow up. I have never been a fan of halters. Even the ones with the great marketing name. But, if you are getting good results with them, great. I much prefer a prong collar, but I know a lot get their feeling hurt by their use now days. The people, not the dogs... LOL The "dog reactive" GSD pup, I got in two days ago, threw an impressive fit. For about 2 minutes. Once we worked through that she was playing with my female GSD in less than 30 minutes. LOL She has a new home. What we are working on now is you don't play like fiends in the house. :)

Love your videos! They have helped me transform our highly energetic and under-socialized recue into a pretty well behaved dog. Walks are completely loose-leash now and he stops and sits without prompting. However, he will still lunge at other dogs as we pass. If I catch him early I can make him sit or a correction when he hits the end of the leash will bring him into control. BUT, he will then sit or stand by my side and bark and howl at the other dog. It’s like he knows he’s supposed to behave but throws a little tantrum because I won’t let him meet the other doggie. He’s way too excited, and I generally don’t know the passer-by, to be able to suggest we let them meet. Any ideas?

I have a friend who's like that with her dogs, and have had to forbid her from encouraging my 8 month old Aussie pup with baby kissy talk to jump up for hugs and kisses. She thinks I'm so mean but WTF! I want a mannerly dog that I can take anywhere, not an over-indulged brat who thinks she can jump on every person or dog she meets. Would love to see you do a video or two on this particular issue: owners who are too wimpy with their dogs and try to baby talk them out of bad behavior. Although I wonder if those kinds of owners would ever even come to you in the first place. :P

Worked nights and he got his walks in at nighttime However I did not take my dog everywhere I went so it was not a huge problem Also he could not hurt most dogs . He would sit obey any commands I gave so if I said stop he would stop but I always had to give the command to stop. I loved my Yorkie and he was bought with intention of being a home lap dog. But he did have mommy issues as I did Baby him to death. But when I gave the command all nonsense stopped . He also was not a jumper

@Ericsaidful
@Ericsaidful Жыл бұрын
Lol...pitbulls are responsible for greater than 60% of dog bite hospitalizations, all other breeds are around 40%, in the U.S.. The AKC recognizes around 300 breeds of dog, and pitbull breeds and their mixes are responsible for more than half of hospitalizations and I believe the number of deaths is even higher. So good that your stitches were caused by a cocker but the fighting genes in pit bulls is strong. Go watch a video of an attack, on anything (e.g. horse, bull, child) and you will see them wagging their tail the entire time. They love it. You can ignore the facts, or just say you don't care, but don't fucking lie.

I do the best I can and we have relali good days. But I know they are under socialized. We used to b able to go to dog parks but I couldn't correct all 3 at once. Now two do not go and are under socialized plus we keep having incidences when I walk them n there is a unleashed dog that comes up to them. They stop I freak out n we get in a tussle with the damn loose dog. So now the two are reactive on leash and I just wish I had more hands and time to help them. They're insecure. I'm insecure. Smh.

The mom thing of the little dog would need to be treated by mom chsnging her behaviour of treating the dog like a child but a dog. For me it helps when I remember that my dog although little in size, is a real adult man and i wouldn't let a 30year old man child with temper tantrums run my life,by bullying me, barking orders,or being annoying. Hence I suggest turning the back when she jumps up and ignoring her until her behaviour stops. I feel that mom is trying to calm her by petting, but that's human language not dog. Correcting with a sound like 'ao',followed by the consequence ignoring or being taken away from mom for a few seconds and setting and enforcing family/dog rules and boundaries at home probably is a nessacity...

Been watching all your videos, cause I'm training my dogs and it's going super! One video that I haven't found in your KZfaq it's about resource guarding with people. I'm helping a family with a dog they rescued and he growls, barks and bites when they get close to his food, it's pretty scary. I tried giving him the food myself, but it was a little dangerous, at the beginning he growled and barked really bad, even tried to bite me, and after some time I would ask him to sit and give him some on another plate, it worked but I don't know if it can fix his behavior🤔 So I would like to know if there is another method, that it's not so dangerous plz. l really want to help them cause they are going to give him for adoption and don't want him to have those issues with his new family😭

Slowly hand feed its kibble one at a time and drop it into its bowl that you are holding.

I think people let their little dogs jump like that cause they 1. forget its not nearly so "cute" when they're older 2. it doesn't hurt. Just don't do that. If you like the jumping sometimes (cause you can catch them or some kind of trick like that) make it invitation only. Please... that was painful to watch.

Yup!! Did the same thing when I had Yorkshire Terriers. It was cute then. Not cute now since I have a 85 pound doberman. Don't put up with it anymore. I learned the hard way and grew up. No more "mommy issues".

Good content, but in what ways does this man disagree with Cesar?? Honestly curious because he seems to do a lot of the same work, down to "the touch".

I think it's really dangerous when "correcting" on the leash of a gentle leader. One cold break his neck.so do not pull,correct strongly on a gentle leader! I think one needs to take lessons with a trainer when wanting to use a gentle leader. Mr Beckman probably knows what he is doing, but it's not that easy. one could and probably would do a lot wrong...

I had a little chihauhau mix, very muttly , about the size of Kiki, a little yellower, looked a lot like Kiki come running up to my two year old golden retreiver and bit him on the nose with no provocation whatsoever. It was a pretty bad bite. Blood flowed. It left a scar. Hydrogen peroxide treatment was enough, though. Little dogs CAN cause damage.

When I use the gentle leader, she always rolls on the ground trying to get it off. I always tell her No and pull the leash to get her to stand but she keeps at it. Any tips?

Condition the gentle leader with special high value treats plus go slowly.go on walks with the leader on but not in action so they get used to wearing it. I would never pull on the gentle leader. I would have both ends of the leash connected to the dog (leader and harness,or collar) to be able to hold him and not pull on the gentle leader...

Thanks for the video very informative. What brand gentle leader do you use? I’ve tried so many but my dog can get out of them and haven’t found a decent one yet.

I have a well behaved dog, runs on recall, never forges ahead, very obedient.....but he sees a German Shepard or Irishwolfound he goes off, and has attacked one, leaving an offleash park to attack an Irish wolfhound on lead walking away from us. Can Breed specific reactivity be fixed? Is great with most other dogs

You said muzzles don’t change the thinking of the dog . But with an e collar , will the dog know not to be reactive when it’s on?

I’m thinking about adopting a 4 1/2 year old Dobermann but the adoption place said the dog is “ he will bark and lung at strangers if they are within a couple feet radius” which makes me hesitant. I don’t have experience with this bread and I’d like to know how hard would it be to fix this problem and his age? I think a gental leader would be a good start along with the techniques. Bu

Still trying to figure out my dog. He is castrated male and he absolutely hates other younger dogs who jump him or try to (most of those dogs are not trained, super hyperactive and energetic, extremely aroused by him). We found him on street at 7months old, castrated him at 9months because he was absolute nightmare to other dogs, now he is 1 year and 6 months old. He got better but we are trying to work on this and honestly I don't know how, people say with time he will calm down but nothing resolves itself, of course. I look to improve my knowledge and learn as much as I can to work with my dog to help him but this is something I do not have an answer to. With some males he is amazing with, when they jump him he let's them know its not okay but with some he loses his mind (didn't bite anyone yet... but I can't really be sure that it won't happen at some point). He knows his commands... and we actually succeeded with him ignoring one of the dogs that "annoy" him (off leash) but that's one of many. Anyone have any advice or experience with this type of behavior? We will keep training and building our relationship, but I'm always looking for more advice and guidance, especially from people who know what's up! 😊 P.S. Love the work you do, keep it up! You helped me a lot and I hope to learn a lot more from you and your dogs. Thank you for making the effort! ❤
