I liked the technique of adding the stationary counter weights to extend the lifted cranes across the canal by lowering the boom without swinging it around. Most of the crane crashes, shown on youtube, happen while swinging around, and/or, lowering the boom, with a load, and not enough counter weights.

Like to know what CWT was used for lifting the drilling rig ? Crane boom 240' appears to be about 45 deg. angle when lowering the drill. If so, using the boom as the hypotenuse of a right triangle and taking the Sin of 45 deg (.707) we can multiply 240' by .707=170' rounded off. Using a radius of 170' x 130,000 lb= 22,100,000 lb moment of force. If the center of CWT is 40' to rear of crane center-- 22,100,000/40' = 552,500 lbs CWT. !!! Not sure of the exact numbers or measurements actually used on this job. I worked around cranes on big jobs years ago but never anything like this. Hats off to these professionals.

Been several years ago for me, but used to be around pier rigs a lot, and they all used kellies. Typically two or three telescoping sections. Since they don't use drill pipe, just the telescoping kelly, there is no real advantage to a top drive system.

@electrolytics4 жыл бұрын
@@kylevanwinkle2081 Ok I don't know that much about cranes but I was thinking there was no way that crane weighs 120 tons with or without ballast. I still can't believe that mobile crane can lift 120 tons. But I guess maybe it can.
@kylevanwinkle20814 жыл бұрын
@@electrolytics that little 120 we had 2 of them set up to move a 51ton vessel off a trailer. And each was maxed out 120ton isn't really realistic capacity. They dont even ship the cranes out with 120ton lift blocks because they will never lift 120ton except in super specific conditions. The average 100ton cran ships with a 70-80ton lift block for instance. Most ive picked with a 100ton i think was like 40ish ton and it had to be right up on it. The crawler crane lifting the smaller crane can be setup to be incredibly strong and quite far distances. Especially with the added ballast tray like they have. Ive actually made my biggest lift with a similar crane tailing a 1000t crane that was lifting 510ton so at start the tailing crane was holding 255ton and lost weight as the larger crane stood the tower up. Cranes are such simple machines that can do incredibly complex tasks as long as they are set up correctly and load charts are followed
@electrolytics4 жыл бұрын
@@kylevanwinkle2081 Thanks for the info. I've driven trucks for 18 years and worked on the railroad as a switchman. I know my weights pretty good. That's what I initially thought....there's no way that vehicle itself weighs 120 tons. Then I thought maybe 120 tons means it's lifting capacity..but I thought that was a little steep too.
@kylevanwinkle20814 жыл бұрын
@@electrolytics some of the crane designed require the crane to be heavier than the load others not so much. Its all about leverage. I've worked with cranes where the boom its self was 500t and to stand the boom up off the ground you needed 1200ton of ballast on top of the cranes base weight itself. We made a pick at 394ft of 250t with a 2500t crane and iirc we had 1300tons of auxiliary ballast and 250ton of main ballast to reach that far using the 450ft boom. This put the boom angle as a fairly low degree meaning the leverage the crane had was low thus the high ballast weight. Look up deep south crane or mammoet they do some extremely heavy lifting and have some of the largest cranes in the world. We sub contract both companies out fairly regularly. We use tnt sometimes as well.
