Newly released video filmed by an aid worker as typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) ripped through the Philippines last Friday (November 8) shows the tsunami like power of its storm surge.

People tend to underestimate storm surge. In most hurricanes it comes in like a tsunami. There is a book about the 1900 Galveston hurricane. The survivors said it came in like a wall of water.

grabe tong bagyo..ngayon palang ako nakaranas sa tanang buhay ko....wasak na wasak ang bahay namin sa lakas ng hangin....masakit man sa damdamin dahil nawalan kami ng bahay,ngunit salamat sa mga taong nagtulong sa amin.para maipatayo muli ang aming bahay at maiharap muli ang bagong kinabukasan...

I reckon it was close to the eye. Once you get away from the thunderstorms around the eye the wind drops off dramatically. A lot of people tend to think the entire storm has pounding rain. The hurricanes I have been in have bands of heavy rain with periods of light rain or just a sprinkle in between.
