Richard James, AKA "Reaper Rick," is a simple Red-blooded, paranoid, country man. His long history of Military Service has taught him to never trust the government, pushing him to live out his days in the country, off of the grid. Other than his religious viewership of his favorite cable news network, his only other connection to the outside world is through his good buddy, "Squinty Joe," who he only keeps in contact through HAM Radio. The two of them engage daily about the latest wild conspiracy theories, further exacerbating and shaping their views on the world. The two are constantly trying to one-up each other, bragging about who has the latest gear or best doomsday prep. In their minds, the apocalypse is right around the corner so it only makes sense to have a solid plan. In this Sci-fi Dramedy short film, we follow a day in the life of Rick as his intense paranoia becomes a reality during one of the strangest days of his life!

exactly! and he squares up to a door with unknown threat behind it...rookie mistake, if that had been Chicago, or any Blue city, he'd be dead :-) Always look for cover first, then survey the threat dynamic, no mag dumps until you understand what's going on. I think at least part of the intent here was to make fun of gun owners... show them as undisciplined slackjaws. But is was funny none the less. Can we do one with light-in-the-loafers, chicken-chested, urban soy boys too? Could show them running under the bed, calling mommy from the fetal position. Could be fun

I wonder how they managed to shoot the scene of bullets trashing the place though? Low power rounds? Camera trick? It has been a while since I went through basic but I did remember going full auto with 5.56, you can't really "sweep" the place, for one, 30 rounds only lasts about 3 seconds and controlling the recoil means that your shots end up landing in a basketball sized zone and drifts upwards rather than sideways. And the idea of shooting that many 5.56 in a confined room gives me the hebegebees, no telling when a ricochet is going to bounce back at you. So... low power rounds from a weaker weapon? Or something else?

One of the issues with short films in general, NOT ALL, but especially when it's low budget, new filmmakers etc.. is that everyone wants to make that serious dramatic thought provoking short that really holds a mirror up to ....... blah blah blah ... but somewhere along the way we forgot to be entertained. This was entertaining. And didn't take itself too serious. THANK GOD. Very well done guys. 👍

Don't get me wrong, I love "hold my beer" stories but they have to sorta make sense to be funny, this didn't and wasn't.

I'm glad you liked this particular entry.. but I must point out.. all the filmmkers who present their work here are, I am sure, doing their very best with the resources and skill levels they have at the time of production. To subjectively say this one is more "creative" to any other does a great disservice to the content that doesn't appeal to your tastes or meet your standards. I'm sure in the many films you've made you've noticed just how difficult it can be to even get a finished product to a screen.. let alone be good enough to be selected to be streamed on Dust.

This is just perfect in every way - I am a proud Southerner born and raised and I have known dozens of guys like the Everyman Hero protagonist here. The film reveals this side of the American spirit honestly, but without the rancor so often heaped upon these guys. Just as it should be.

@emptyCanFilms Well, I have to say, I really enjoyed this. Wasn't sure what to expect at the beginning. I do a bit of visual effects but this really looked good. In fact, if I were to guess, it was a combination of effects and some actual shooting. I'd be very curious about that in particular - a behind the scenes would be nice. Almost looks like you got hold of a house that was maybe going to be destroyed that they let you use. Great work!

I freakin LOVED IT! 🎉🫶🏼🫵🏼 What's funny is the main character is the type of man I love..... So I might be a little biased! Lol 😅😂 I'd like to say good job on directing, I love the film editing, did a really good job on the sleeves, great CGI, the sound effects were on point, great job on wardrobe and the acting! ⭐ ⭐⭐⭐ This movie was put together from the writing/plot down to the miniscule aspects of creating a flawless movie.🎉 GREAT JOB! 🎉 We would really like to see what you could do with an hour-and-a-half because it takes a little bit more as you know ( actually a lot more), but you know what I'm saying.... hmmm... 🤔 We wonder if you can pull & hold the attention for an entire 1 1/2 hour movie without losing any other of your excellent scores.?!?! If so, you definitely got a following out of my home base plus, I bet many more across the world too! 🫶🏼🍿📽️💞🥰 Keep em coming 😊 *PS: if you wanna laugh... I really enjoyed this send up of the prepper mentality (it duly notes that there's gold in them thar prepper marketing hills). I enjoyed the acting and extremely effective FX. An A+ for me.

A satirical illustration of modern consuming facilities and the possible unsuspected backlash which might go along with them ... I truly love the comedian impersonating the ex-service man gone paranoid , the derision of his frantic but pointless wild and desperate struggle and the final gag of the drone delivery service which acts less as a relief for poor Rick James than as a banana skin treacherously dropped under his feet !!!! Frederick Brown a science -fiction writer remembered for the dark humor and irony he used in his short stories to fustigate both human gullibillity and foolisnness would have loved your script - just as much as I did !!!!!

The video seems emblematic of the disdain that urban hive-dwellers have for rural free men. Where the joke is "person who isn't owned by tech corporation is stupid." Which is a common joke among urbanite bug-people.

I watched this film three months ago. I'm happy to see it's being featured on DUST. Living in the South, I've got a lot of friends that can relate to this movie. This is fantastic work, and I'm hoping Justin can make a sequel or something in the same universe as this one. 5 out of 5!

I've seen 560 DUST Sci-Fi movies and your's the best. A perfect parody of American scared mind, with perfect acting, scenario, special effect and filming. WOW! I wish more directors could join DUST :-)))
